Course Description
Kitchen and Bath Design I teaches basic residential kitchen design and presents the National Kitchen and Bath Association design principles. Students complete kitchen and bath design projects including programming, space planning, mechanical systems, and product selection.

- The NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines are the industry's shared reference, and they are what a client, a contractor, or a competing designer will measure your work against. They exist because kitchens and bathrooms have repeatable functional requirements that ignore taste.
- They are guidelines, and some are code. Part of the value of the NKBA document is that it distinguishes recommended practice from code requirements — know which is which, because you may negotiate the first and not the second.
- Clearances are where designs fail. Walkway and work-aisle widths, distance between opposing runs, landing area beside appliances and sinks, and door and drawer swing conflicts are the recurring problems, and they are invisible on a plan that was drawn without checking.
- Draw the swing. Dishwasher doors, oven doors, refrigerator doors with their handle clearance, and cabinet doors in a corner all collide with something in a plan that has not tested them.
- The work triangle is a starting point, not a rule. Contemporary planning increasingly uses work zones — prep, cooking, cleanup, storage — which handles multiple cooks and modern appliance sets better than a single triangle does.
- Storage is the complaint clients make most often afterwards, and it is the easiest thing to under-plan. Inventory what actually has to go in the room.

- Drain slope and venting are physical requirements, not preferences, and they limit how far a fixture can move.
- Waterproofing is what prevents catastrophic failure. Shower pans, substrates, membranes, and correct detailing at transitions are the difference between a bathroom that lasts and one that rots the floor structure. Tile is not waterproof, and neither is grout.
- Florida's humidity makes ventilation a life-safety-adjacent issue. Inadequate bathroom exhaust produces mould, which is a health problem, a liability problem, and an expensive remediation problem in this state specifically. Specify adequate CFM, duct it to the exterior — never into an attic — and consider a timer or humidistat.
- Kitchen ventilation must be sized to the cooking appliance. High-output ranges need serious hoods, and very high-CFM hoods can require make-up air by code.

⚠ Florida realities: budget, moisture, and the remodelling market
- Kitchens and baths are the highest-cost rooms per square foot, and clients routinely underestimate by a large factor. Establish a realistic budget early and design to it — a beautiful presentation that the client cannot afford wastes everyone's time and damages trust.
- Learn what things cost. Visit showrooms, collect price lists, and build a personal sense of the difference between an entry-level and a premium specification. This is a professional skill and it is learned only by paying attention.
- Slab-on-grade construction is the Florida norm, which constrains plumbing relocation and makes some layouts far more expensive than they appear.
- Humidity affects material selection. Cabinet finishes, wood movement, and hardware corrosion all behave differently here, and coastal salt air is harder still on fittings and hardware.

Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
