Course Description
Commercial Interior Design is an advanced application in creative problem solving and research of the design process for non-residential interiors, covering space planning, programming, human factors, code requirements, and specifications, with a sample test project.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, IND is the Interior Design prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits, prerequisite IND1233, offered fall, with a $15 lab fee.
The move from residential to commercial work is the most consequential transition in an interior design curriculum, and it is not primarily aesthetic. Non-residential interiors are governed by building codes, accessibility law, and life safety requirements that do not apply to a private house — and in Florida, non-residential interior design is also the part of the field that is regulated by statute. This course is where a student stops arranging rooms and starts producing documents that a plans examiner will read.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Codes are the difference between residential and commercial — and they are Florida's own
- Florida does not use a model code unmodified. The Florida Building Code is a state-specific code with its own amendments, adopted on a revision cycle, and local jurisdictions add requirements on top of it. Designing to a generic IBC understanding will produce drawings that fail review here.
- Occupant load drives almost everything. It determines the number and width of exits, restroom fixture counts, and whether an assembly occupancy triggers additional requirements — and it is calculated from area and use, not from how many people the client says will be there.
- Means of egress is the life safety core — exit access travel distance, common path of travel, dead-end corridors, minimum widths, door swing direction, and hardware. A beautiful plan with a non-compliant exit path is not a design, it is a redraw.
- Accessibility is federal law, not a code option. The ADA applies to places of public accommodation and commercial facilities, and the Florida Accessibility Code for Building Construction incorporates and in places exceeds the federal standards. Clearances, turning space, reach ranges, counter heights, door manoeuvring clearance, and toilet room layouts are all dimensional requirements that must be drawn correctly.
- Accessibility litigation is common in Florida, and non-compliant construction is expensive to remedy. Designers carry real professional exposure here.
- Finish materials are regulated. Flame spread and smoke development ratings apply by occupancy and by location within the means of egress, and the required class differs between a corridor and a room. Get the test data from the manufacturer and keep it; "it looked fine" is not a specification.
- Rated assemblies must be maintained. Penetrating a fire-rated wall or ceiling for a design element destroys the rating unless it is properly detailed.
- Rule 11 applies with force. The Florida Building Code is amended on a regular cycle, accessibility guidance evolves, and local amendments vary. Verify the edition in force for your jurisdiction and check with the building department early — not after the drawings are done.
⚠ Programming is the part students skip and professionals never do
- Programming is the research phase that defines the problem before any planning begins, and a design solving the wrong problem is worthless no matter how it looks.
- Interview the client and the users, and notice they are not the same people. The person paying for a workplace and the people who will sit in it want different things, and a designer who hears only one has a partial brief.
- Document adjacency requirements — which functions must be near each other, which must be separated, and why. Matrices and bubble diagrams exist because the relationships are hard to hold in your head.
- Quantify. Headcount, growth projection, area per function, storage, equipment, and circulation factor. Space planning is arithmetic before it is composition, and a plan that does not add up will not fit.
- Observe the existing operation where you can. Clients describe how they think they work; watching shows how they actually do.
- Write the programme down and get it approved. An agreed programme document is what protects you when the requirements change later, and scope creep in design work is constant.
- Design decisions should trace back to the programme. Being able to say "this configuration follows from the adjacency requirement you approved" is how a designer defends a scheme — and it is what a critique or a client presentation is testing.
⚠ You do not work alone — coordination is most of commercial practice
- Commercial interiors are one discipline among several. Architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineers, contractors, and vendors all touch the same building, and their requirements constrain yours.
- Ceilings are contested space. Ductwork, sprinklers, lighting, structure, and cable trays all compete for the plenum, and a reflected ceiling plan drawn without coordination will not build.
- Sprinkler heads and diffusers land where engineering requires, and a ceiling grid designed without them looks very different once they arrive.
- Power and data must be located before millwork is fabricated, and a beautifully detailed reception desk with no outlet in it is a familiar and avoidable failure.
- Structure does not move for a design idea. Columns, shear walls, and floor loading are constraints to design with rather than around.
- Existing conditions are never as drawn. Field-verify, and build tolerance into details.
- Know when to bring in a licensed professional. Permitted work generally requires sealed documents, and recognizing that boundary is professional competence rather than a limitation — see the licensure flag.
- Specifications are a contract document. Vague specification language is how a project ends up with a product nobody wanted and no basis to reject it.
⚠⚠ Interior design is a regulated title in Florida — know what you may call yourself
- Florida regulates interior design under Chapter 481, Part I, Florida Statutes, the same chapter that governs architecture, through the Board of Architecture and Interior Design within DBPR.
- The regulated activity is non-residential ("commercial") interior design. Residential interior decorating and residential design work generally fall outside the registration requirement, which is why the commercial-versus-residential distinction in this curriculum is a legal one and not only a stylistic one.
- Registration requires an accredited degree, qualifying experience, and the NCIDQ examination. The education requirement is substantial, and an A.S. degree alone will not satisfy it — a CIDA-accredited bachelor's degree is the usual route.
- Title and practice restrictions have been amended repeatedly, including deregulation efforts and changes to what unregistered persons may do and call themselves. Rule 11 applies with force — verify the current state of Chapter 481 and the Board's rules directly with DBPR before relying on anything, including this guide.
- Sealed drawings and permitting are the practical boundary. Work requiring a building permit generally requires a registered interior designer or an architect or engineer to seal the documents, and that is where an unregistered designer must bring in a licensed professional.
- Plan the education pathway early. If NCIDQ and registration are the goal, confirm before enrolling that your A.S. articulates into a CIDA-accredited bachelor's programme — get it in writing, because applied A.S. degrees do not carry the A.A.'s junior-status guarantee.
⚠ Check the scheduled studio hours — the credit value understates the time
Daytona State publishes the credit value but not a lecture-and-studio hour split, and this repository's contact-hour figure is an estimate for planning rather than a published number.
- Design studios routinely meet more hours per week than a lecture course of the same credit value, and the pattern is standard across the discipline rather than unusual.
- Read the section schedule before you register. A three-credit studio can occupy two long afternoons a week, which constrains employment and other coursework far more than the credit count suggests.
- Out-of-class production time is larger still. Drawings, boards, and models are not finished in the studio period, and students consistently underestimate this in their first design term.
- Take fewer studios at once than you think you can manage. Two simultaneous design studios is a heavy term; three is a mistake most students make exactly once.
- Contact hours vary within this prefix at a single college, which is why a family ratio is not used here — this repository documented the same behaviour in the ART prefix.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.

The catalog's mention of a "sample test project" is worth noting — commercial design courses commonly use a project modelled on professional practice or on the NCIDQ practicum, and treating it accordingly is good preparation.
This is the course whose output belongs at the front of a portfolio. A complete commercial project — programme document, planning diagrams, code analysis, drawing set, finish schedule, and presentation — demonstrates everything an employer wants to see, and it is far more persuasive than a folder of attractive renderings.
