Course Description
Lighting for Interior Design examines fundamental principles of lighting. Students explore lighting effects, lighting systems, and the effect of lighting on human behaviour for both residential and commercial applications.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, IND is the Interior Design prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits with a $15.00 lab fee, offered spring, giving approximately 45 contact hours at the prefix's lecture convention.
Lighting is the element of interior design that most affects how a space feels and is most often got wrong. A well-proportioned room with well-chosen finishes will still be unpleasant under a single bright ceiling fixture, and an ordinary room becomes convincing with considered light. The phrase in the catalog description that matters is "the effect of lighting on human behaviour" — light affects alertness, mood, perceived warmth, where people choose to sit, and how long they stay, and those effects are measurable rather than impressionistic.
Daytona State does not publish a lecture and laboratory split for its IND courses. The prefix runs at three conventions: studio courses at 30 contact hours per credit (IND1233C and IND2210C at 3 credits and 90 hours), graphics, software, and applied courses at 20 (IND1300, IND1429C and IND2410C at 3 credits and 60 hours), and lecture courses at 15 (IND2220 and IND2500 at 3 credits and 45 hours). This course is lecture-based and is priced at the lecture convention.

Special Information
⚠ Layer the light — one fixture in the middle of the ceiling is the default failure
- A single overhead source produces flat, shadowless, unflattering light and it is the most common lighting fault in residential interiors.
- Design in layers. Ambient light for general illumination, task light where work happens, accent light to model objects and surfaces, and decorative fixtures that are themselves objects — a good scheme uses several, controlled separately.
- Put the light where the task is. General ceiling light does not illuminate a worktop or a reading chair adequately, and adding more of it does not fix the problem.
- Control glare deliberately. A bare lamp in the field of view is uncomfortable regardless of how much light it produces — shield, recess, or diffuse it.
- Light surfaces, not just space. Washing a wall makes a room feel larger and brighter than the same lumens directed downward.
- Dimming is the cheapest quality improvement available, because the light a room needs at ten in the morning is not what it needs at ten at night.
- ⚠ Check colour rendering, not just colour temperature. A source with poor colour rendering makes finishes, food, and skin look wrong — and a client who says their new kitchen "feels off" is frequently describing this.
- Keep colour temperature consistent within a space; mixed warm and cool sources look like a mistake because they are one.
- Look at the room at night and during the day. Daylight changes everything, and a scheme designed only on paper misses it.
⚠ Light affects people measurably — that is why this is a design responsibility
- Light exposure influences the circadian system, and the timing, intensity, and spectrum of light affect alertness and sleep. This is physiology, not atmosphere.
- Bright, cooler light supports alertness; warmer, dimmer light in the evening supports winding down. Designing a space that is used at both times means designing for both.
- Older eyes need considerably more light and are more sensitive to glare — a genuinely important consideration in Florida, with a large older population and a large senior living sector.
- Lighting affects where people go and how long they stay. Retail and hospitality use this deliberately, and it works.
- Poor lighting causes fatigue and errors in workplaces, and inadequate light on stairs and level changes causes falls.
- Daylight and views have documented wellbeing benefits, and preserving them is a design decision worth defending to a client.
- Ask how the space will actually be used, by whom, and at what times, before selecting anything.
- Energy codes constrain what you may install, and they are a design input rather than an afterthought.
⚠⚠ Interior design decisions are life-safety decisions in commercial space
- The distinction between decoration and design is code compliance, and it is the reason the field is regulated at all.
- Egress governs. Exit access, travel distance, corridor and door widths, and the arrangement of furniture and partitions all affect whether people can leave a building in an emergency — and a layout that blocks or lengthens egress is a defect, not a style choice.
- Finish materials have fire ratings. Flame spread and smoke development classifications apply to wall and ceiling finishes, and what is permitted differs by occupancy and by location within the building — corridors and exit stairs are the most restricted.
- Specify tested and documented materials. A finish without a documented rating cannot be approved where one is required, and "it looks similar" is not a substitute.
- Accessibility is a legal requirement, not a courtesy. The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Florida Accessibility Code govern clearances, reach ranges, turning space, door hardware, and toilet room layout — and these constrain design more than any aesthetic consideration.
- Occupancy classification drives the requirements, and a change of use can trigger substantial upgrade obligations.
- Sprinklers, alarms, lighting, and signage interact with layout, and coordination with other disciplines is part of the work.
- ⚠ Florida's building code includes wind and, in coastal areas, flood requirements that affect interior work more than designers expect.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies — codes are adopted on a cycle and amended locally; verify the adopted edition with the authority having jurisdiction.
⚠⚠ Interior design is regulated in Florida — establish what you may practise before you plan a career
- Florida is one of a minority of states that regulates interior design, and it does so under Chapter 481, Part I, Florida Statutes — the same chapter that governs architecture — through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Board of Architecture and Interior Design.
- ⚠ The regulation distinguishes residential from non-residential work. Florida provides for registered interior designers and for licensure, and what a person may lawfully do — particularly in commercial and other non-residential interiors, and particularly where drawings are submitted for permit — depends on that status.
- This matters enormously for career planning and students frequently do not discover it until late. Establish early what you will and will not be permitted to practise, and what the pathway to registration involves.
- Registration typically requires a combination of education, documented experience, and examination — the NCIDQ examination is the recognised qualifying examination in this field.
- Education requirements frequently reference programme accreditation, and CIDA is the accrediting body for interior design programmes. ⚠ Check a programme's accreditation status against the requirements before enrolling — this is the same trap recorded elsewhere in this repository for allied health, and it is equally unrecoverable after the fact.
- An associate degree may not by itself satisfy the education requirement for registration; plan the full pathway if registration is the goal.
- Working under a licensed or registered professional is how most people begin, and it is how the required experience is accumulated.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies emphatically. Titles, scopes of practice, education and experience requirements, and examination rules all change, and this is a contested area of regulation in several states. Verify current requirements with DBPR and the Board rather than relying on any course guide, including this one.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
