Course Description
Graphics of Interior Design I covers basic presentation techniques with emphasis on materials and presentation boards, together with oral, written, and graphic presentation, and emphasis on marker and pencil rendering techniques.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, IND is the Interior Design prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits, offered fall, with a $132 lab fee — the highest fee in the prefix by a wide margin, and an accurate signal of a materials-intensive studio course rather than a lecture.
This is a communication course disguised as a drawing course. A designer's work reaches the client, the contractor, and the reviewer only through representation — drawings, boards, samples, and the ability to talk through them. An idea that cannot be communicated does not exist commercially, and the students who struggle in this field are frequently not the ones with weak ideas but the ones who cannot present them.

- Different title, different credit value, different prerequisite structure. A transfer in either direction produces a mismatch, and the sequence position differs too.
- Studio and graphics courses transfer poorly in general. They are institution-specific, portfolio-based, and often sequenced tightly, so receiving institutions frequently require their own version regardless of what the transcript says.
- Get any transfer determination in writing, and expect a portfolio review to be part of it.
⚠ Check the scheduled studio hours — the credit value understates the time
Daytona State publishes the credit value but not a lecture-and-studio hour split, and this repository's contact-hour figure is an estimate for planning rather than a published number.
- Design studios routinely meet more hours per week than a lecture course of the same credit value, and the pattern is standard across the discipline rather than unusual.
- Read the section schedule before you register. A three-credit studio can occupy two long afternoons a week, which constrains employment and other coursework far more than the credit count suggests.
- Out-of-class production time is larger still. Drawings, boards, and models are not finished in the studio period, and students consistently underestimate this in their first design term.
- Take fewer studios at once than you think you can manage. Two simultaneous design studios is a heavy term; three is a mistake most students make exactly once.
- Contact hours vary within this prefix at a single college, which is why a family ratio is not used here — this repository documented the same behaviour in the ART prefix.
⚠ Hand skills still matter, and the reason is not nostalgia
- The industry runs on digital production — Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and rendering engines — and nobody should finish a programme without them. This course is not an argument against that.
- Hand drawing is faster than software at the stage where speed matters most. In a client meeting, a site walk, or a design conversation, the ability to sketch an idea in thirty seconds changes what is possible. Nobody opens a laptop to explain where a wall might go.
- Drawing by hand teaches you to see. Proportion, scale, and spatial relationship are learned through the hand in a way that dragging geometry does not replicate, and it shows later in the quality of digital work.
- Understanding the drawing conventions is what makes the software legible. A student who learned plan, section, and elevation by drawing them uses CAD as a tool; one who did not uses it as a mystery.
- Rendering by hand teaches material and light. Choosing how to represent a polished stone, a matte fabric, and a glazed surface forces you to look at how they actually behave.
- Sketch daily. Twenty minutes a day for a term produces a visible change; a weekend of catching up does not. Keep a sketchbook and date the pages.
- The combination is what employers value — a designer who can sketch in a meeting and then build it properly in Revit is more useful than one who can only do either.
⚠ Critique is instruction, not judgement — learn to use it
- Design education runs on critique, and students frequently arrive from other disciplines unprepared for having work discussed publicly.
- It is about the work, not about you. That distinction sounds trite and is genuinely difficult in a field where the work feels personal — and learning it now is what makes a client's revisions survivable later.
- Take notes during your own critique. Students who argue instead of writing lose the content, and the notes are the assignment for the next iteration.
- Ask clarifying questions, do not defend. "Which part reads as unresolved?" is useful; explaining what you meant is not — if it needs explaining, the drawing has not communicated it, which is precisely the finding.
- Listen to everyone else's critique too. Most of the learning in a studio happens while other people's work is being discussed.
- Bring something. An incomplete idea pinned up gets you a useful critique; an empty wall gets you nothing, and the students who hide their unfinished work learn slowest.
- Iterate visibly. Instructors are assessing development, and keeping your process work — thumbnails, rejected schemes, overlays — demonstrates it and is portfolio material in its own right.
⚠ Studio safety and materials — small hazards, frequent injuries
- Knives cause the injuries in a design studio. Use a sharp blade with a metal straightedge, cut away from your body onto a proper mat, retract the blade every time you set it down, and change blades often — a dull blade slips.
- Spray adhesive and fixative must be used in a spray booth or outdoors, never at a desk. The solvents are genuinely harmful to breathe and the overspray coats everything nearby.
- Markers are solvent-based and produce significant vapour in an enclosed room. Work in ventilated space and take breaks; headaches during long marker sessions are a warning, not a nuisance.
- Read the safety data sheets for adhesives, solvents, and fixatives, and know that some are flammable.
- Protect your work from your own materials — marker bleeds through, fixative can lift media, and adhesive stains board. Test on scrap first, every time.
- Photograph finished boards immediately. Physical work is fragile, it gets damaged in transport, and the photograph is what survives into the portfolio.
⚠⚠ Interior design is a regulated title in Florida — know what you may call yourself
- Florida regulates interior design under Chapter 481, Part I, Florida Statutes, the same chapter that governs architecture, through the Board of Architecture and Interior Design within DBPR.
- The regulated activity is non-residential ("commercial") interior design. Residential interior decorating and residential design work generally fall outside the registration requirement, which is why the commercial-versus-residential distinction in this curriculum is a legal one and not only a stylistic one.
- Registration requires an accredited degree, qualifying experience, and the NCIDQ examination. The education requirement is substantial, and an A.S. degree alone will not satisfy it — a CIDA-accredited bachelor's degree is the usual route.
- Title and practice restrictions have been amended repeatedly, including deregulation efforts and changes to what unregistered persons may do and call themselves. Rule 11 applies with force — verify the current state of Chapter 481 and the Board's rules directly with DBPR before relying on anything, including this guide.
- Sealed drawings and permitting are the practical boundary. Work requiring a building permit generally requires a registered interior designer or an architect or engineer to seal the documents, and that is where an unregistered designer must bring in a licensed professional.
- Plan the education pathway early. If NCIDQ and registration are the goal, confirm before enrolling that your A.S. articulates into a CIDA-accredited bachelor's programme — get it in writing, because applied A.S. degrees do not carry the A.A.'s junior-status guarantee.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
IND1300 is 3 credits, offered fall with a $132 lab fee. Expect studio sessions with pinned-up critique and a continuous stream of production deliverables rather than examinations. Attendance is effectively mandatory: the demonstrations are the instruction, and they cannot be recovered from a textbook.
Keep everything you produce, and photograph it. Interior design is a portfolio field, hiring decisions are made on portfolios, and the work from a first graphics course — particularly the rendering and board work — is exactly what a portfolio's foundation looks like.
