Course Description
IDS3052 is the gateway course for interdisciplinary degree programmes. The Statewide Course Numbering System titles it Introduction to Integrated Studies and describes it as "an introduction to the knowledge, theories, and perspectives that serve as the foundation to integrated studies programs and to integrated thinking." The statewide prerequisite is none.
Three Florida public universities carry it, under near-identical titles: Florida Gulf Coast as Intro to Integrated Studies, the University of West Florida as Introduction to Integrative Studies, and Florida State as Introduction to Integrated Studies.
⚠⚠ But the credit values are not near-identical: FGCU and UWF carry it at 3 credits and Florida State carries it at 1. A one-credit course and a three-credit course are not the same course, and nothing in the title, the number or the statewide description signals the difference. See *Offering Notes* — this is the divergence to check before you register or transfer.
⚠ What an interdisciplinary studies degree is, and why it needs a course like this. Interdisciplinary programmes let a student build a degree across two or more fields — environmental policy drawing on biology, economics and law; health humanities drawing on medicine, literature and ethics; a self-designed major. The risk in such a degree is obvious and this course exists to address it: ⚠⚠ a collection of courses from different departments is not an integrated education. Integration is an intellectual act — identifying where disciplines actually meet, recognising that they use the same words differently, and producing a synthesis that says something neither field would say alone.
⚠ The most useful single idea in the course is that disciplines are not just topics — they are methods, assumptions and standards of evidence. An economist, a historian and a biologist studying the same fishery are not disagreeing about facts so much as applying different criteria for what counts as a finding. Seeing that clearly is what makes interdisciplinary work more than a survey, and it is also the most transferable thing the course teaches.

- ⚠⚠ The most valuable resource in this course is your university library's subject librarians, and almost no student uses them. An interdisciplinary project means searching literatures you were not trained in, and ⚠ a subject librarian will tell you in ten minutes which database a field actually publishes in — something that otherwise takes weeks to discover. Every Florida public university has them and consultations are free.
- Free tools: Zotero (reference management across citation styles — ⚠ essential when your sources use APA, MLA and Chicago at once), Google Scholar, Connected Papers for mapping a literature, and OpenAlex or Semantic Scholar for cross-field search.
- ⚠ Your own institution's degree requirements and your adviser. This is the one course in the catalog where the institutional paperwork IS course content — the degree plan you build here governs the rest of your programme, and an error in it costs a term later.
- ⚠ Florida context worth using for projects: the state supplies unusually good interdisciplinary problems with abundant free data — Everglades restoration (ecology, engineering, agriculture, law, politics, tribal sovereignty), sea-level rise and property (geoscience, insurance, planning, equity), water quality and algal blooms (biology, agriculture, public health, tourism economics), hurricane recovery, immigration and demographic change, and the space economy. Data from the water management districts, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Office of Economic and Demographic Research and the Census is free and local.
Career Pathways
- ⚠⚠ The honest framing first, because students in interdisciplinary degrees are told two opposite things and both are half true. An interdisciplinary degree does not name an occupation, so it does not carry a job title the way "nursing" or "accounting" does. It also does not close doors that a named major would close. The determining factor is not the degree's name — it is whether you can state clearly what you can do and show evidence of it. This course is where that statement gets built, which is why the "articulate your degree" outcome is not a soft skill.
- Common destinations for interdisciplinary graduates, by SOC where one applies: Management Analyst (13-1111), Project Management Specialist (13-1082), Market Research Analyst (13-1161), Human Resources Specialist (13-1071), Public Relations Specialist (27-3031), Social and Community Service Manager (11-9151), Urban and Regional Planner (19-3051), Training and Development Specialist (13-1151).
- Non-profit and government programme roles, grant writing and development, policy analysis, and sustainability coordination — ⚠ fields that are themselves interdisciplinary and where a single-discipline degree is no advantage.
- ⚠ Graduate and professional school is a very common route, and interdisciplinary degrees are well regarded for law (SOC 23-1011), public health, public administration, social work, library and information science, and interdisciplinary master's programmes. ⚠⚠ Where a professional programme has specific prerequisite courses — medicine, physician assistant, engineering, accounting — the interdisciplinary degree must be planned around them deliberately. That planning happens in this course or it does not happen in time.
- Adult degree-completion context: ⚠ interdisciplinary and integrated-studies programmes are frequently the route by which a working adult with prior credit finishes a bachelor's degree, and the destination is often advancement in a current employer rather than a first job. That is a legitimate and common use of the degree and it deserves saying.
- Florida context: the state's large employers in health systems, hospitality and tourism, government, education, logistics and the space sector hire heavily into coordination, analysis, programme and communications roles that specify a bachelor's degree without specifying a field. ⚠ The competitive factor there is internships and demonstrated projects, not the major.

Three State University System institutions, and ⚠⚠⚠ a three-fold credit difference: 3 credits at FGCU and UWF, 1 credit at Florida State.
What a 1-credit version almost certainly is, and what follows. A 1-credit introduction meeting roughly an hour a week is a programme orientation seminar: the vocabulary, the degree requirements, advising, planning the major, and an introduction to the capstone ahead. ⚠ A 3-credit version has room for the substantive half as well — comparative disciplinary epistemology, the integration process applied to real problems, and a written integrative project. Both are legitimate and each serves its own programme. They are not the same preparation.
⚠⚠ The transfer consequences, and they cut both ways:
- ⚠ Transferring the 1-credit version into a programme that requires 3 leaves a student two credits short, and in a tightly budgeted degree that surfaces in the final audit rather than at the time.
- ⚠ Transferring the 3-credit version into a programme expecting 1 credit produces two credits that may land as free electives — not a loss, but not what the student paid for either.
- ⚠⚠ The harder problem is content, not arithmetic. A programme whose capstone assumes students learned the integration process in this course will find a transfer student who took the orientation version unprepared. Ask the receiving programme whether the course satisfies the requirement, and ask whether the capstone assumes it.
⚠ The title variation — "Integrated" versus "Integrative" — is not a divergence. Both words are used in the field for the same thing, and UWF's use of "Integrative" simply matches its own programme name. Do not read anything into it.
⚠ The 45 contact hours at the top of this guide are derived — the Florida convention for a 3-credit lecture course, and it describes the 3-credit version. No institution publishes an hour figure. ⚠⚠ For Florida State's 1-credit version the corresponding figure is about 15 hours, roughly an hour a week. Published at the 3-credit value because that is the majority reading and the one the statewide description's scope fits — but a student at FSU should plan around the smaller figure.
⚠ A 3000-level course with no prerequisite, and why that is deliberate
The statewide prerequisite is explicitly none, yet the number is upper division. ⚠ That combination is unusual and it is the right design: the course is taken at the point a student enters the interdisciplinary programme, which is typically after an associate degree or after two years of general education and a change of direction. It needs no prerequisite because its job is orientation, but it belongs at the upper-division level because its audience is upper-division students.
⚠⚠ Take it as early in the programme as possible — ideally the first term. Its practical output is a degree plan, and a plan built in the first term shapes the next two years; a plan built in the third term ratifies choices already made. Students who delay this course are the ones who discover a missing requirement late. The statewide record also notes it is available for dual enrolment, so it may be met earlier still.
Workload, assessment and the failure mode
Budget six to nine hours a week for the 3-credit version and two to three for the 1-credit. ⚠ The reading is lighter than most upper-division courses and the writing is heavier, because reflection and integration are written outputs.
⚠⚠ The characteristic weak submission is a summary in two parts. A paper that explains what biology says about a fishery, then what economics says, and stops, is multidisciplinary — and the course's own vocabulary is the tool for seeing why that is not enough. Integration requires the third move: where do these accounts conflict, what assumption produces the conflict, and what more comprehensive understanding accommodates both? That third paragraph is the assignment.
⚠ The second failure is treating the reflective work as filler. Reflection in this course is assessed as evidence of metacognition — whether you can describe how you think and how it changed — and it is usually worth more of the grade than students expect.
⚠ One thing this course should give you that no other course will
A sentence. ⚠⚠ By the end of it you should be able to say, in one or two sentences and without apology, what your degree is and what it equips you to do — to an employer, a graduate admissions committee, and a relative at a family gathering. Students with named majors get that sentence for free. Interdisciplinary students have to write it, and this is the course where it gets written.
Write it down, and revise it every term. It goes at the top of a résumé, into a cover letter, and into the first thirty seconds of an interview. ⚠ The degree is not harder to explain than any other; it is only harder to explain badly.
AI Integration
Genuinely useful, and this is a course where the tools help more than average: orienting quickly in an unfamiliar discipline — its central questions, its methods, its key terms — which is exactly the repeated task of interdisciplinary work; translating vocabulary between fields; explaining an unfamiliar article type or method; suggesting which disciplines bear on a problem you have framed; summarising long readings; generating counter-arguments; explaining citation conventions across styles; and drafting and tightening reflective and integrative writing.
⚠ The genuinely strong use, worth naming: asking how two different fields would each approach the same problem, and then checking that against the actual literature. As a way to generate candidate perspectives before doing the reading, that is efficient and legitimate.
⚠⚠ Where it fails, and the first one is aimed straight at this course's core skill:
- ⚠⚠⚠ It produces MULTIdisciplinary output and calls it integration. Ask a model about a complex problem and you get a competent, sectioned survey: here is the economics, here is the ecology, here is the policy. ⚠ That is precisely the thing this course teaches you to recognise as insufficient. The integrative move — locating the conflicting assumption and building common ground — requires holding two frameworks against each other and deciding something, and the tool's default is to present both and stop. A generated answer is an unusually clean specimen of the error on the syllabus, which makes it a genuinely useful thing to examine deliberately: read the output and ask what integration it failed to do.
- ⚠⚠ It smooths over real disciplinary disagreement. Fields genuinely conflict about what counts as evidence, and the output tends to present a consensus that does not exist. The conflict is the interesting part and the tool erases it.
- ⚠ It is shallow outside the mainstream of a field. Confident about a discipline's textbook consensus, unreliable about its current debates, its methodological controversies and its minority positions — which is often exactly where an interdisciplinary question lands.
- It invents citations, and ⚠ the risk is higher here than usual because you are citing across literatures you cannot yet judge. A fabricated reference in an unfamiliar field is harder to spot than in your own.
- ⚠⚠ It cannot write your reflection, and reflection is graded. Metacognitive writing is evidence about a specific person's thinking. Generated reflection is fluent and empty, and instructors who read a lot of it recognise it immediately.
- ⚠ It does not know your degree requirements — and this is the course whose practical output is a degree plan. Institutional requirements come from your catalog and your adviser. A model's guess about them can cost a term.
⚠ The framing worth keeping: interdisciplinary work is valuable precisely because it requires judgement that no single framework supplies. Use these tools to get oriented faster in fields that are new to you; do the integrating yourself, because the integrating is the degree.
Academic integrity: read your syllabus. ⚠ Where the assessment is reflective writing, a degree proposal or a portfolio, the work is by definition personal — and it is also the work that will be most useful to you later, which is a better reason to do it yourself than any policy.
