Course Description
HSC1000C – Introduction to Health Care is a survey course orienting students to
health care as a field of work: how the system is organized, who works in it, what is expected of a
professional, and what the legal and ethical obligations are. The C suffix reflects a
laboratory or skills component — commonly vital signs, infection control practice, body mechanics, and
CPR or first aid certification.
It is typically the first course in a health science pathway and functions as a filter in the useful
sense: it lets a student find out what the work involves before committing to a limited-access clinical
program. Programs also use it to establish the professional expectations — attendance, appearance,
documentation, confidentiality — that clinical courses will enforce far less gently.
Content covers the United States health care system — delivery settings,
financing, and how it compares internationally; health care professions and the education,
licensure, and scope of each; professional behavior — appearance, punctuality,
accountability, and teamwork; communication with patients, families, and colleagues,
including therapeutic technique and handoff; medical terminology fundamentals;
legal responsibilities — scope of practice, negligence, informed consent, and
advance directives; HIPAA and confidentiality;
ethics — principles and common dilemmas; cultural competence and
health disparities; patient safety and error prevention;
infection control and standard precautions; body mechanics and safe
patient handling; vital signs and basic measurement; and
emergency response including CPR and first aid.

Special Information
Start the clinical clearances now — they take longer than students expect
The most useful practical advice in this course. Every Florida allied health program requires, before a
student may touch a patient: a Level 2 background screening under Chapter 435, F.S.
— fingerprint-based and submitted through the state's clearinghouse — plus a drug screen,
documented immunizations including annual influenza, a physical examination, healthcare-provider CPR
certification, and liability insurance. These take weeks, cost money, and a delay in any one of them can cost
clinical days. A Level 2 screening can also disqualify an applicant for offenses listed in
statute, and a student with a criminal history should find that out before investing in a program
— the disqualifying offense list is public, and exemption processes exist but take time.
Scope of practice is the concept that carries the most weight
Every health profession has a legally defined scope, and exceeding it is both a licensure violation and a
liability exposure — a nursing assistant who adjusts a medication, or a medical assistant who
interprets a result for a patient, has created a real problem. Florida scopes are set by
Chapter 456 and the individual practice acts, administered through the
Florida Department of Health boards. The course establishes the habit of knowing where the
line is and referring across it rather than reaching past it.
Limited-access programs admit competitively — plan for that from the start
Most Florida nursing and allied health programs admit a fixed cohort by ranked application, weighing
prerequisite GPA (especially science courses), an entrance examination such as the TEAS or HESI A2, and
sometimes health care experience. Meeting minimum requirements is not the same as being admitted. Students
should identify their target program in this course, obtain its current admission rubric, and plan the
prerequisite sequence around it — particularly anatomy and physiology, where grades
carry the most weight and retake policies vary.
HIPAA obligations begin before employment does
Students on clinical rotation are bound by HIPAA, and violations — discussing a patient
identifiably, photographing anything in a clinical setting, looking up a record out of curiosity —
result in dismissal from programs and can end a career before it starts. Social media is the most common
route to trouble. This is worth taking literally rather than as a formality.
Certifications frequently earned in this course
Many sections include BLS for Healthcare Providers certification through the American
Heart Association or Red Cross, and some include first aid or bloodborne pathogen training. These are real,
portable credentials with expiration dates — typically two years — and students should note the
expiry, since programs require current certification at the time of clinical placement.
Numbering and credit variation
The course appears as HSC1000 and HSC1000C, and related introductory
content appears under HSC1531 (medical terminology) and HSC1531C and other
HSC numbers. Credit values vary from 1 to 3 depending on how much skills content is included. SCNS
equivalency applies to the same number at the same level, never across numbers — verify what a
receiving program requires.
