Course Description
GRA2111C Graphic Design I is the foundation studio course of the graphic design curriculum. It teaches the formal vocabulary of visual communication — line, shape, form, space, colour, type, hierarchy, composition — and the working process by which a design problem is analysed, explored through iteration and resolved.
The course is offered at approximately six Florida institutions, including the University of West Florida, the University of Florida, Florida International University, Hillsborough Community College, Santa Fe College and St. Petersburg College.
At the University of West Florida the course is titled Introduction to Graphic Design and offered by the Department of Art and Design. UWF describes it as an overview of the formal elements of design, contextualised within a framework that stresses experimentation, creativity, innovation and expression; an introduction to design fundamentals used in all advanced applications of design; and an exploration of the principles of design as the necessary foundations for all applied art and design work, producing work with vector-based and raster-based design applications.
⚠ The University of Florida titles the same number Visual Methods and Processes — a notably more abstract framing that describes the course as a study of method rather than as an introduction to a profession. That divergence is addressed in Special Information, because it signals a real difference in how the foundation year is conceived.
The central adjustment students make in this course is that design is not decoration and is not self-expression. A design problem has a purpose, an audience and constraints, and the solution is judged by whether it works for that audience rather than by whether the designer likes it. Students arriving from a fine art background find the constraint frustrating; students arriving expecting to learn software find that the software is the least of it. The course's actual content is a way of thinking about visual problems, and the applications are tools for executing decisions made elsewhere.
The second adjustment is iteration. UWF's description leads with experimentation, and the studio method is built on it: a design problem is answered with twenty rough options before one is developed, because the first idea is almost never the best and because exploring the space is how a designer discovers what the problem actually is. Students who produce one polished comp and defend it do poorly; students who produce thirty thumbnails and can explain why they abandoned twenty-nine do well.
The third is critique. Studio courses assess work by public discussion, which is unfamiliar and initially uncomfortable. It is also the mechanism by which designers learn to separate a judgement about the work from a judgement about themselves — a professional necessity, since client feedback for the rest of a career will be considerably less considered than a classroom critique.

- Hardware: a computer capable of running the applications; a graphics tablet is helpful and not essential at this level; access to a colour printer and a large-format printer through the department.
- Type and image resources: Google Fonts and Adobe Fonts for licensed typefaces; understanding font licensing terms, which differ between desktop, web and application use; Creative Commons and public domain image sources; institutional library image collections.
- Professional organisations: AIGA, the professional association for design, which has student memberships and active Florida chapters in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa Bay and Miami; the Type Directors Club; Behance and Dribbble as portfolio platforms, used critically.

Graphic design is a field where the portfolio is the credential and the degree is the structure that produces it. This course is where the portfolio starts.

Two pieces of practical advice specific to this field, and they matter more than the coursework:
- The portfolio is the hiring decision. Employers look at work, not transcripts. Keep everything from this course, photograph and document it properly, and rebuild the strongest pieces later when your skills improve — foundation work reworked in the senior year is often the best portfolio material.
- Learn to talk about your work. The ability to explain a design decision in terms of audience and purpose — which is exactly what critique trains — is what separates a designer an employer will put in front of a client from one they will not.

UWF's and the statewide title describe the same thing. UF's is the outlier, and it is informative rather than arbitrary: "Visual Methods and Processes" frames the course as foundational method — how visual problems are approached — rather than as an introduction to a professional field. That framing is common in art and design programmes that treat the foundation year as shared across disciplines, so that the same course serves students heading into graphic design, illustration, digital media and studio art.
The practical consequence is worth checking. A methods-framed foundation course may weight process, drawing and conceptual exploration more heavily and specific graphic design applications less; a graphic-design-framed one moves into typography, layout and software earlier. Both are legitimate foundations and both transfer under the same number — but a student transferring into a programme expecting typographic competence from the first course should confirm what theirs covered. Bring the portfolio; in this field the work settles the question faster than a syllabus.
⚠ The `C` suffix and contact hours — a studio course, not a lecture
GRA2111C carries the `C` suffix, indicating an integrated course combining instruction with studio work. The contact hour convention for GRA courses is substantially above the lecture standard — this repository has recorded GRA courses at approximately 72 contact hours for 3 credits (roughly 32 lecture and 40 laboratory or studio), with some GRA courses running higher still.
The consequence for planning is real. A three-credit studio course occupies considerably more scheduled time than a three-credit lecture — typically two long studio blocks a week — and the scheduled time is only part of it, because studio work continues outside class. Students planning a term with several studio courses should count contact hours rather than credits.
Prerequisites and position in the curriculum
UWF lists no prerequisite for GRA 2111C. Practice varies: many programmes require a drawing course and a two-dimensional design foundation course (commonly ART 1201C) before it, and some art and design programmes admit students to the major by portfolio review either before or after the foundation year.
Check whether your programme has a portfolio review and when it occurs. This is the single most important structural fact in an art and design degree and it surprises transfer students in particular — a portfolio review that admits students to the upper-division major after the foundation year means that completing foundation courses does not guarantee progression.
This is the first course of the graphic design sequence, normally taken in the sophomore year, and it is prerequisite to essentially everything above it — typography, publication design, identity, interactive and the advanced studios. Take it as early as the programme allows, because the sequence is long and studio courses are frequently offered once a year.
Articulation and transfer
GRA2111C carries the same SCNS number across Florida public institutions and SCNS equivalency governs transfer of the credit. As a lower-division course it appears in A.A. and A.S. programmes — Hillsborough, Santa Fe and St. Petersburg all offer it — and transfers into bachelor's programmes.
Three cautions specific to art and design. Programmes accredited by NASAD apply their own curricular requirements. Portfolio review may govern admission to the major regardless of transferred credit, which is the substantive issue for transfer students. And an A.S. in graphic design technology is a career degree whose transfer is governed by specific articulation agreements rather than the A.A. guarantee — students intending a BFA should confirm which associate pathway they are on early, because the correction is expensive.
Course format and workload
Three credit hours with studio contact hours substantially above the lecture standard. Taught as demonstration plus supervised studio work, with critique as the primary assessment mechanism — projects are presented and discussed publicly, and grades reflect both the work and the reasoning offered for it.
Expect ten to fifteen hours a week outside scheduled studio time, concentrated before critiques. The workload is not evenly distributed and it is not compressible: a project requiring thirty thumbnails cannot be produced the night before, and instructors can tell.
Four pieces of practical advice:
- Do the volume of ideation. The thumbnail requirement is not busywork; it is where the good solution comes from, and students who skip it produce first ideas that look like first ideas.
- Save iteratively and back up. Losing a file the night before a critique is a recurring and entirely avoidable disaster.
- Learn keyboard shortcuts early. Speed in the application is not the skill, but slowness in it consumes time that should go to thinking.
- Photograph and document everything — process work included. It is portfolio material and you will not reconstruct it later.
⚠ Critique — what it is and how to use it
Critique is the studio method and it is unfamiliar to most students. A few things make it work:
- Describe before evaluating. "The type is competing with the image for attention" is useful; "I don't like it" is not.
- The critique is about the work. Learning to hear "this isn't working" as information rather than as a verdict on yourself is a professional skill, and clients will be considerably blunter.
- Do not defend during critique. Explain your intent if asked, take notes, and revise afterwards. Arguing with a critique wastes the only free expert feedback you will get.
- Critiquing others sharpens your own eye faster than making work does. Participate.
⚠ Copyright, licensing and originality
Worth flagging because students arrive without the concepts and the professional consequences are real:
- Images found through a search engine are not free to use. Stock licences have terms, Creative Commons licences have conditions including attribution, and public domain is a specific legal status rather than a synonym for "available online".
- Fonts are licensed software. Desktop, web, application and broadcast uses are typically licensed separately, and a font legally installed on a computer may not be legally embeddable in a client's product. This is the professional constraint students are most often unaware of.
- Reference and influence are normal; copying is not. Designers study and borrow from the field constantly, and the boundary is between learning from a solution and reproducing it. Programmes treat the latter as plagiarism.
AI Integration
Graphic design has been affected by generative systems more directly and more visibly than almost any other field in this repository, and a foundation course has to address it honestly rather than either ignoring it or catastrophising.
What the tools now do. Text-to-image systems produce competent illustration and photographic imagery. Generative features inside professional applications extend backgrounds, remove objects, generate variations and produce vector shapes from prompts. Template systems assemble competent layouts from content. Background removal, upscaling, colour matching and other formerly manual tasks are now automated well. Some of this is unambiguously good — masking a complex subject used to take an hour and now takes a moment, and no designer misses that hour.
What has genuinely changed for the profession. The commodity end of visual production — stock imagery, simple layouts, routine asset variation — has been substantially devalued, and roles that consisted mainly of executing straightforward visual tasks are under pressure. Students should hear that plainly rather than discovering it at graduation.
What this course teaches is the part that has become more valuable, not less. A generated image is an input, not a solution. The work is deciding what the design problem is, who the audience is, what the piece has to accomplish, and whether a given visual answer accomplishes it — and then constructing hierarchy, typography and composition so that it does. Generative systems produce imagery; they do not produce judgement about fitness for purpose, and they are notably poor at exactly the things this course drills: typography, hierarchy, precise alignment and legible text in an image. Anyone who has asked a generative system for a poster with readable type has seen the limitation directly.
Three matters that belong in the course's professional content:
- Rights and licensing are unsettled. The training data question, the copyright status of generated output, and the terms under which commercial tools may be used for client work are all in active legal and contractual dispute. A designer delivering work to a client is warranting something about its provenance, and vendor indemnity terms vary. This is a live professional risk rather than a theoretical one.
- Disclosure to clients. Norms are forming, and the safest professional position is transparency about how work was produced. A client who discovers after the fact that generated imagery was delivered as original illustration has a legitimate grievance.
- Style imitation is an ethical question the field is actively arguing about. Generating work "in the style of" a living illustrator raises issues that the design community — including AIGA — has taken positions on, and students entering the field should know the argument rather than encountering it in a client meeting.
For coursework, the pedagogical point is the same one made across this repository and it applies with particular force in a foundation studio. The purpose of producing thirty thumbnails is not the thumbnails; it is developing the visual judgement that lets you recognise which of thirty is worth developing. A generated composition delivers an artefact without the judgement, and the judgement is the entire content of the course. Follow your instructor's policy, which in foundation studios is frequently restrictive for exactly this reason — and note that many programmes permit these tools freely in later courses, once the foundation is built.
A final observation worth carrying forward. The designers whose work will remain valuable are those who can look at a generated option and say precisely why it does not work — the hierarchy is wrong, the type undermines the message, the composition sends the eye to the wrong place. That vocabulary is what this course exists to build, and it has become more useful, not less, now that the supply of plausible-looking visual options is effectively unlimited.
