Course Description

FFP2521C – Construction Documents and Plans Review is a 3-credit, 45-contact-hour sophomore-level course in Florida's Fire Science Technology curriculum. It teaches a fire service professional to read construction drawings and specifications, and to review submitted plans against the codes that govern fire and life safety.

The skill is specific and practical. A set of construction documents is a technical language — plan, elevation, and section views; scales; symbols and abbreviations; schedules; and specifications — and a fire inspector or plans examiner must extract from it the information that determines whether a building will be safe: occupancy classification and load, egress arrangement and capacity, fire-resistance ratings and separations, sprinkler and standpipe layout, alarm and detection coverage, fire department access and water supply, and hazardous materials storage.

Reviewing plans is the earliest and cheapest point at which a fire safety problem can be fixed. A deficiency caught on paper costs a revision; the same deficiency caught at final inspection costs construction rework; caught after occupancy, it may cost lives. The course teaches plans review as the front end of the fire prevention function.

The course is one of the required components for Florida Fire Inspector I certification, alongside FFP2120 Building Construction for the Fire Service, fire prevention practices, private fire protection systems, and codes and standards. The Florida State Fire College delivers the same content as BFST2521, and the course carries 45 continuing education hours toward Fire Inspector certificate renewal.

This course and FFP2120 Building Construction for the Fire Service are complementary halves of the same competency and are both required for Fire Inspector I. FFP2120 teaches how buildings are assembled and how they fail under fire; this course teaches how to read the documents that describe them before they are built. Programs commonly sequence FFP2120 first, and students generally find this course easier with that background.

Prerequisites

Students without construction or drafting background frequently underestimate this course. Reading a full set of construction documents is a genuine technical skill, and the first weeks — scales, projection, symbol vocabulary — are where students fall behind if they treat it as reading rather than as a skill requiring practice. Working through complete document sets repeatedly is what builds the fluency the certification examination assumes.
