Course Description

EXP4404 Psychology of Learning covers how experience changes behaviour — the experimental study of conditioning, reinforcement and the processes by which organisms acquire, retain and modify what they do. It is the course where psychology is at its most rigorously experimental, and where students encounter the tradition that established the discipline's laboratory methods.

The course is offered at approximately six Florida institutions, including the University of West Florida, the University of Florida, Florida State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Atlantic University and the University of South Florida.

⚠ The scope of this course varies more than its title suggests, and the reason is structural. Florida Gulf Coast University describes EXP 4404 narrowly as a survey of methods, empirical findings and theoretical interpretations in respondent and instrumental conditioning — that is, classical and operant conditioning, and little else. The University of West Florida describes a broader course covering principles and applications of learning theories, including conditioning and extinction, reinforcement and punishment, attention, memory, cognitive processes and physiological correlates of memory and cognition. The University of Florida titles the same number Psychology of Learning and Memory, naming the second half explicitly.

The explanation is what else the department offers. FGCU runs a separate EXP 4604 (Human Memory and Cognition), so memory belongs there and EXP 4404 stays on conditioning. UWF's version folds memory and cognition in. So the same number covers a narrower or broader territory depending on whether the institution has somewhere else to put the cognitive material — a pattern worth checking before assuming what a transferred course covered.

What makes the conditioning material genuinely worth studying, rather than a historical curiosity, is that it works. This course has a stronger and more direct employment connection than most psychology electives, because of one field: applied behaviour analysis.

Florida is one of the strongest markets in the country for behaviour analysis. The state has a large autism services sector with insurance coverage mandates that support it, a substantial number of ABA provider organisations, and one of the larger state behaviour analysis professional associations. School districts employ behaviour specialists; the Agency for Persons with Disabilities and its providers serve developmental disability populations; and the state's universities host behaviour analysis graduate programmes. For an undergraduate who finds this course compelling, the pathway from RBT during the degree to BCBA after a master's is unusually well defined and unusually employable.

The determining factor is whether the department has a separate memory and cognition course to put that material in. Two practical consequences. If you need the memory and cognition material — for graduate study, or because a programme requires it — check whether your version includes it or whether you need EXP 4604 or its equivalent as well. Animal research

The course should address it directly rather than around: the research operates under institutional animal care and use oversight with defined welfare standards, the justification rests on the translational value of the findings — which in this field has been substantial — and reasonable people disagree about where the balance lies. Many courses now use simulations rather than live animals for teaching, which is a separate question from the research itself.

AI Integration

This course has an unusually direct connection to machine learning, and it runs in the opposite direction from most of the AI sections in this repository: learning theory contributed to the technology rather than merely being affected by it.

The historical connection is real and worth knowing. Reinforcement learning as a field of computer science descends directly from the animal learning tradition this course covers — the terminology is borrowed, and the core algorithms formalise ideas from it. There is also an applied and slightly uncomfortable connection. Variable-ratio reinforcement schedules produce high, persistent responding that is resistant to extinction — the course teaches this as an empirical finding, and it is also the design principle behind engagement-optimised systems, from slot machines to recommendation feeds. Students who understand schedule effects can describe precisely why such systems are compelling, which is both an analytical achievement and an ethical question the course is well placed to raise. For coursework, the ordinary limits apply.
