Course Description

Transport Phenomena II is where the subject stops using correlations and starts deriving them. The statewide description: molecular mechanisms for momentum, heat and mass transport; differential balance equations for conservation of momentum, energy and mass; application to steady and unsteady-state chemical processes involving diffusive and convective mass transfer in solids, liquids and gases; interphase transfer mechanisms; boundary layer theory and turbulent transport.

⚠⚠ This is the hardest mathematics in the degree. Shell balances become partial differential equations, and the work is in choosing a coordinate system, identifying the boundary conditions and knowing which terms may honestly be dropped. Students who arrive without fluency in differential equations and vector calculus meet the consequences in week three.

Most chemical engineers never license: process plants fall under the industrial exemption. ⚠ The Florida exceptions are environmental and water engineering consulting, where work is sealed for public clients.
