⚠ Aerospace structures is not civil structures with different vocabulary. A building is designed with generous margins; an airframe is designed to be as light as it can be and still survive, which is why thin-walled theory, buckling and fatigue dominate the course and why the safety factors are small enough to be frightening.

Structures is one of the largest employment areas in aerospace and one of the most portable — the same analysis serves launch vehicles, airframes, satellites and pressure vessels. ⚠ This is packaging, not divergence. Florida gives institutions leeway in how they split a course into registrations, and a lecture plus a separate lab is as complete as an integrated course. But it changes what you must register for and how many credits you end up with — so check your own catalogue rather than assuming the 3-credit course is the whole thing.
Florida Polytechnic does not carry EAS4200; it carries EAS3200 Introduction to Aerospace Structures. That is a level twin — the same subject positioned a year earlier in the curriculum — and it is a normal Florida pattern (compare EGN2312 and EGN3311 for statics). Both are upper-division, so the transfer exposure is small; the scheduling consequence is not, because the course sits in a different year of the degree plan.
The statewide gate is “dynamics”. The working prerequisite is mechanics of materials — stress, strain, bending, torsion and Mohr’s circle — because this course is that material applied to thin-walled sections. Dynamics matters for the load cases. If mechanics of materials was a struggle, revise bending and shear before the term starts.
Much aerospace work is subject to ITAR and EAR export control, which in practice restricts many roles — and some laboratory and project work — to U.S. persons, and a great deal of defence work additionally requires a security clearance that takes months to obtain. This is not a course requirement, but it is a career requirement, and it is better understood in the second year than after an offer.
A Professional Engineer licence is uncommon in aerospace — most of the work falls under the industrial exemption, and employers hire on degree, project record and clearance. ⚠ It is still worth sitting the FE examination in your final year: it is inexpensive then and expensive to recreate later, and it keeps open a move into consulting or civil-adjacent work. Under s. 471.013(1)(a), Florida Statutes, an approved engineering curriculum needs four years of experience toward the PE and an approved engineering technology curriculum six.
