Course Description

DIM0102C – Diesel Electrical and Electronics Technician is a 300-hour Postsecondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) course carrying zero credit hours; the clock hours are the real measure. It is an Occupational Completion Point within Florida's Diesel Systems Technician program.

The course covers the electrical and electronic systems of heavy-duty diesel equipment — and this is where modern diesel work has largely moved. A contemporary truck, bus, or piece of heavy equipment is a networked system with multiple electronic control modules governing fuel delivery, emissions, transmission, and vehicle systems. Diagnosing it requires reading schematics, using a multimeter and a scan tool competently, and reasoning from symptom to cause rather than replacing parts.

Content begins with fundamentals: electrical theory, Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, and electronic components. From there it moves through general electrical systems diagnosis including wiring, connectors, and circuit protection; battery diagnosis and service; starting systems; charging systems; lighting systems; gauges, instrumentation, and warning devices; and computers and computerized fuel systems including sensors, actuators, and control modules.

Instruction is competency-based and heavily hands-on. Students work on live equipment and are assessed by demonstration, not by written examination alone.
