DIG2000C – Introduction to Digital Media is a 3-credit sophomore-level course introducing contemporary digital design across print, web, interactive media, and motion graphics. Seminole State describes it as exploring "the avenues of contemporary digital design, highlighting the importance of process, innovation and communication." A lab fee normally applies.
The course is deliberately broad, and that breadth is its purpose: students entering digital media programs often do not yet know which direction they want, and this course exposes them to the major disciplines while establishing the design fundamentals common to all of them.
Content covers the elements and principles of design — line, shape, form, space, color, typography, hierarchy, balance, contrast, and alignment. These are not decoration; they are the difference between a design that communicates and one that does not, and the course treats them as the underlying grammar.
Students work with raster and vector graphics and learn the distinction that governs practical decisions about resolution, scaling, and file format. Color theory covers RGB versus CMYK, color modes, and why a design that looks right on screen may print wrong. Typography receives real attention.
Production work typically uses the Adobe Creative Cloud applications — Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign at minimum, often with an introduction to After Effects for motion. Seminole State specifies Foundations of Digital Art and Design with Adobe Creative Cloud as the text.
The course emphasizes process: developing concepts, iterating, critiquing, and defending design decisions. Most versions require a portfolio of finished work.

Florida's creative employment is concentrated in Orlando — theme park design, simulation, and a substantial animation and games sector — along with Miami's advertising, fashion, and Latin American media market, and Tampa's marketing and agency sector. Freelance and remote work are unusually accessible in this field, which matters for students who cannot relocate.
The course appears as DIG2000 and DIG2000C, and under the titles Introduction to Digital Media and Intro to Digital Media (Tallahassee State). Under SCNS these are equivalent at the same level; credit value is consistently 3. Note that DIG2005 (Introduction to Digital Technologies) is a different course and not interchangeable.
Most institutions require no prerequisite beyond college-level placement — the course is designed as an entry point. A lab fee applies at most institutions, and students should expect to need reliable access to Creative Cloud software; many institutions provide it in labs and some offer student licensing. Students without a suitable computer should confirm lab availability before enrolling, since the work is production-based.
Worth telling students early. Design employers hire from portfolios, and the work produced in introductory courses frequently forms its first entries. Students should treat assignments as portfolio candidates — documenting process, keeping high-resolution source files, and revisiting early work later to improve it. A transcript is nearly irrelevant in this field; a body of work is not.
Design education runs on critique, and students frequently find their first critiques difficult because the work feels personal. The professional framing instructors use: critique addresses whether the design achieves its communication objective, not whether the designer has taste. Learning to hear it that way, and to give feedback that way, is part of the course.
Generative AI has affected visual design faster and more visibly than most fields, and a current version of this course cannot ignore it.
Where AI helps. Image generation tools produce concept references and mood-board material quickly, which compresses early ideation. Generative fill and content-aware tools inside Photoshop handle retouching and extension work that was previously laborious. Language models help with copy, naming, and articulating a design rationale. Used this way, AI removes drudgery from a process that still depends on human judgment.
Where it fails. Generated images have characteristic failures — hands, text within images, consistent character or brand identity across assets, and precise compositional control. They cannot reliably produce work to specification, which is what client work actually requires. More fundamentally, a generated image is not a design: design is the deliberate arrangement of elements to achieve a communication objective for a specific audience, and a tool that produces a plausible image has not made those decisions.
Legal and ethical exposure is real here. Training data provenance, the copyrightability of purely AI-generated work, and client disclosure obligations are all genuinely unsettled. Stock and licensing platforms differ in their policies. A designer who delivers AI-generated work to a client without understanding the licensing position may be delivering something the client cannot legally own or defend. Students should learn to ask.
Academic integrity. Policies vary by institution and instructor, and design programs vary more than most because the assessment is the artifact itself. The defensible principle: AI is appropriate for ideation, reference, and production assistance, and inappropriate as a substitute for the design decisions being assessed. A student who submits generated output as their own work has not demonstrated the skill the course teaches — and, more practically, cannot reproduce it in a portfolio review or a live design test, which is where hiring actually happens.
