Course Description
Dental Anatomy and Physiology examines human dentition and its supporting structures in detail. Key topics include anatomical landmarks of the oral cavity, tooth and root morphology, and oral histology and embryology.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, DES is the Dental Science and Support prefix and the leading zero identifies postsecondary adult vocational instruction. Daytona State publishes this at 30 clock hours, offered summer, as a corequisite of the dental assisting introduction.
⚠ A small catalog note: Daytona State prints the corequisite as "DEA000", which is one digit short of a valid SCNS number. The intended course is almost certainly DEA0000 (Introduction to Dental Assisting), which the catalog lists separately as having DES0002 as its own corequisite — a mutual pairing. Confirm with the programme, but the reading is not in serious doubt.
Tooth morphology is one of those subjects that looks like rote memorisation and turns out to be the foundation of everything a dental professional does. Charting, instrument selection, radiographic interpretation, and even recognising that something is wrong all depend on knowing, precisely, what normal looks like — and the anatomy is what makes an abnormality visible rather than merely present.

- ⚠ Look after your body from the first week. Sustained awkward posture is the occupational hazard of dentistry and it ends careers — position the patient, not yourself.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Dental numbering systems — know which one you are using
- Three systems are in common use: the Universal system (standard in the United States), the FDI two-digit system (international), and the Palmer notation. They are not interchangeable, and the same tooth carries a different designation in each.
- ⚠⚠ A numbering error is a wrong-tooth error. Charting or communicating the wrong tooth number can lead to treatment on the wrong tooth — an irreversible harm and a serious incident.
- Know which system your practice uses, and be able to convert — specialists, laboratories, and internationally trained colleagues frequently use a different one.
- ⚠ Primary teeth use letters in the Universal system, and confusing a letter for a number in a mixed dentition is a specific and recognised error.
- Confirm laterality explicitly. Right and left are stated from the patient's perspective, and reversing them is easy when working across a chair.
- Read back what you are charting. Verbal charting is fast and error-prone; repeating the tooth and surface aloud catches most mistakes.
- Chart contemporaneously. Reconstructing from memory afterwards introduces errors that then live in the record.
- Learn normal thoroughly. You cannot recognise an anomaly against a vague idea of normal — which is the practical reason this course exists.
⚠⚠ Infection control in dentistry — the exposures are constant and the controls are non-negotiable
- Dental work involves blood, saliva, and aerosol generation continuously, at close range, with sharp instruments in a confined space.
- ⚠ Standard precautions apply to every patient, every time. You cannot tell who carries a bloodborne pathogen, and selective precaution is both unsafe and discriminatory.
- Hepatitis B vaccination is expected, and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires it to be offered at no cost.
- ⚠ Sharps injuries are the principal exposure route. Never recap by hand, dispose immediately, and never reach into a container or an unseen area.
- Know the exposure protocol before an exposure happens — wash, report immediately, seek evaluation, because post-exposure prophylaxis is time-critical.
- ⚠⚠ Sterilisation must be monitored, not assumed. An autoclave can run a full cycle, display success, and fail to sterilise — only biological (spore) monitoring detects it. Keep the records; they are inspected.
- Aerosols spread widely. High-volume evacuation, respiratory and eye protection, and surface disinfection between patients all exist for that reason.
- Waterline management matters — dental unit waterlines form biofilm and require treatment and monitoring; there have been documented patient infections from neglected lines.
⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — the published figure is hours, not credits
- The leading zero identifies postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) instruction, measured in clock hours rather than credit hours.
- ⚠⚠ Daytona State's catalog displays that clock-hour figure under a heading reading "Credit Hours". That is a rendering artefact of the catalog software. The number is hours of instruction; the college credit value of this course is zero.
- PSAV clock hours do not convert to college credit and do not transfer as credit to a degree programme. Do not plan a degree pathway on the assumption that they will.
- What they produce is a workforce certificate and eligibility for a credentialing examination or licence, which is the actual point of the programme.
- ⚠ Articulation agreements sometimes exist letting a completed certificate count toward a related degree. They are specific, they vary, and they must be confirmed in advance.
- Financial aid for clock-hour programmes works differently from credit programmes. Confirm with the financial aid office before enrolling.
- Attendance is the currency. Hours must actually be completed, so absence directly delays completion.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions. A leading zero is different — it marks either postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) clock-hour instruction or college preparatory coursework, neither of which carries transferable college credit.
DES0002 is PSAV clock-hour instruction: 30 clock hours and zero college credit, offered summer at Daytona State.
