Course Description
DEP3103 Child Psychology studies how human beings develop from conception through the end of childhood — physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially — and how researchers established what they claim to know about it. It is the first course of the developmental sequence and the one that supplies the frameworks the later courses assume.
The course is offered at approximately six Florida institutions, including the University of West Florida, Florida State University, Florida National University, Keiser University and St. Thomas University.
At the University of West Florida the course is titled Child Development and offered by the Department of Psychology in the College of Health. UWF describes it as exploring the development and behaviour of children from birth to adolescence from two viewpoints: age periods — prenatal, infancy, preschool, school — and areas — physical, intellectual, personality.
That dual organisation is worth understanding because it is how the whole field is structured. A chronological treatment follows the child through time, asking what a two-year-old is like and then what a six-year-old is like. A topical treatment follows one domain across the whole span, tracing language development or attachment from infancy to adolescence. Textbooks are written both ways, courses are taught both ways, and each obscures what the other reveals — the chronological approach shows how domains interact in a real child, the topical approach shows developmental trajectories clearly. Knowing which structure your course uses helps you anticipate what it will connect and what it will not.
The organising question of the field is what produces developmental change, and the honest answer the course arrives at is more interesting than the nature-versus-nurture framing students arrive with. Genetic influence is real and substantial; environmental influence is real and substantial; and they are not additive. Genes influence which environments a child seeks and how they respond to them, environments influence which genes are expressed, and the same environmental input has different effects on different children. The modern position is not that the answer is "both" but that the question was poorly posed.
A second theme runs through the course and is professionally important: development is variable, and normal covers a wide range. Milestone charts report averages with substantial ranges around them, and a great deal of parental and professional anxiety comes from treating an average as a standard. At the same time, some deviations genuinely warrant attention, and the difference between normal variation and a developmental concern is exactly what professionals working with children need to be able to judge.

The Department of Children and Families and its community-based care lead agencies employ child welfare staff across every region. Special Information
⚠ Prerequisite variation — the same pattern seen across Florida psychology departments
UWF lists no prerequisite for DEP 3103. Other Florida institutions gate their developmental courses more heavily. Florida Gulf Coast University applies a consistent three-part requirement to its upper-division psychology courses — general psychology, plus a research methods course, plus a statistics course — which appears on DEP 4305, DEP 4404 and PPE 4003 alike.
The consequence is the same one recorded for personality theory: where methods and statistics are enforced, the course can examine the evidence critically — evaluating a longitudinal design, questioning an effect size, noticing that a parenting-style finding is correlational. Where they are not, the same catalogue description supports a more descriptive treatment. Both are legitimate; they are not the same course, and a graduate programme reading a transcript cannot tell which one you took.
Take methods and statistics before this course if your schedule allows, whether or not your institution requires them. Developmental psychology is unusually dependent on research design, because so many of its central questions cannot be studied experimentally.
⚠ Course title variation and the DEP sequence
The statewide title is Child Psychology; the University of West Florida titles DEP 3103 Child Development. This is trivial drift.
More useful is knowing that this course is the first of a lifespan sequence, and Florida institutions offer the parts as separate courses:
- DEP 3103 — child development, birth to adolescence (this course)
- DEP 4305 — adolescence and emerging adulthood
- DEP 4404 — adulthood and ageing
Several institutions also offer a single combined lifespan development course (commonly DEP 2004 or DEP 3054) covering the whole span in one term. The combined course is not equivalent to the three separate courses and is normally taken by students in nursing, education and allied health who need one developmental course rather than a concentration. Psychology majors intending graduate work in developmental, clinical or school psychology should take the separate courses.
Position in the curriculum
DEP3103 is an upper-division course normally taken in the junior year after general psychology, and ideally after statistics and research methods. At UWF it is one of the accepted prerequisites for DEP 4222 (Autism Spectrum), which indicates its position as a foundation for the applied developmental courses.
It is taken heavily by non-majors — education, nursing, social work, criminal justice and pre-health students all have professional reasons to need it — and the mixed audience generally improves discussion, since a paediatric nursing student and a future elementary teacher bring different questions to the same material.
Articulation and transfer
DEP3103 carries the same SCNS number across Florida public institutions and SCNS equivalency governs transfer of the credit. As an upper-division course it does not appear in A.A. programmes and is taken after transfer. The transfer caution specific to developmental psychology is the combined-versus-separate issue above: a student who took a lifespan course elsewhere should not assume it satisfies a child development requirement, and a receiving department will look at which it was.
Course format and workload
Three credit hours, approximately 45 contact hours, taught as lecture and discussion; online sections are very common for this course. Assessment typically combines examinations, application or observation papers, article critiques, and sometimes a child observation project. Expect six to eight hours a week outside class.
Where a child observation assignment exists, it is the most valuable component — watching a real four-year-old attempt a conservation task, or watching a toddler's separation behaviour, converts theory into something you have seen. It also teaches how much individual variation there is, which no textbook conveys as effectively. Observation assignments carry ethical requirements: permission from the setting and the parents, confidentiality in the write-up, and no interference with the child.
⚠ What the course corrects, and what it should be careful about
Several widely held beliefs about children do not survive contact with the evidence, and correcting them is much of the course's value:
- Milestone ages are averages with wide normal ranges. A great deal of anxiety comes from treating a chart as a standard. At the same time, some patterns do warrant screening, and the course teaches which.
- Piaget substantially underestimated young children, as later methods showed; his stages remain a useful framework and his timetable does not.
- Most of the parenting literature is correlational, and child effects on parents are real — a difficult child elicits different parenting, so the causal arrow is not obvious.
- The "critical period" for most abilities is a sensitive period, not a closing window; the popular version overstates the irreversibility.
- Bilingual exposure does not delay language development, a persistent and harmful myth.
- Learning styles have no supporting evidence, despite near-universal belief among educators.
Content note: the course covers child maltreatment, neglect, trauma and loss, and some students in any section will have personal experience of these. AI Integration
Two connections belong in this course: the study of children who are growing up with these systems, and the use of the tools in studying development.
The developmental question is genuinely open and worth treating as such. Children are now interacting with conversational systems, recommendation algorithms and generated media from early ages, and the honest state of knowledge is that the research has not caught up. The screen media literature that does exist is mostly about passive viewing and about older platforms, and its findings are more mixed and more moderated by content and context than popular accounts suggest. Verify against the textbook and the primary literature, and note that developmental psychology has an unusually accessible free literature through the resources listed above.
Two cautions with professional weight. Observation write-ups describe a real child, and identifiable information about a minor must not be entered into consumer AI tools — a confidentiality obligation that becomes a legal one immediately in any professional setting involving children. And these systems cannot assess a child. Applications claiming to screen for developmental delay or autism from video, audio or parent report are not diagnostic instruments; developmental screening and diagnosis are conducted by qualified professionals using validated tools, and the base-rate and validity questions that apply to any screening instrument apply to them in full. Students heading into education, healthcare or child welfare will encounter parents who arrive with such a result, and knowing what to say about it is a professional skill.
