Course Description
Biomedical Science covers the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology with emphasis on head and neck anatomy, together with histology, microbiology, pathology, oral pathology, pharmacology, and medical and dental emergency protocols. It is the science foundation of the dental assisting program — the course that makes the rest of the curriculum intelligible rather than merely procedural.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, DEA is the Dental Assisting prefix, and the 0-level number identifies this as a postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) clock-hour course. It carries zero college credits and is measured in 60 clock hours. It appears at approximately four Florida institutions inside PSAV dental assisting programs. Daytona State offers it in spring, after DEA0000 and DES0002 and alongside DEA0801C.
The breadth is deliberate and unusual for a 60-hour course: it compresses several distinct sciences into the specific subset a chairside assistant actually uses. The organizing question throughout is practical — what does an assistant need to know about the body to hand the right instrument, take an accurate medical history, recognize that something is wrong, and respond correctly when it is.

Special Information
⚠ The medical history is the assistant's highest-stakes routine task
Assistants very often take the medical history, and it is easy to treat as paperwork. It is the single most important safety document in the practice, and the biomedical content of this course is what makes it possible to read one properly rather than merely collect it. Four findings deserve specific attention because they change treatment and are commonly missed:
- Bisphosphonates and other antiresorptive drugs — used for osteoporosis and for certain cancers, and associated with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) after extractions and other bone-involving procedures. Patients frequently do not think of these as relevant and do not report them unless asked directly.
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents — increasingly common in an older population, and directly relevant to bleeding risk. Current guidance generally favors not interrupting anticoagulation for routine dental procedures, which surprises people who learned otherwise.
- Antibiotic prophylaxis — the criteria have narrowed substantially over the past two decades. Far fewer patients require premedication than the general public believes, and many patients arrive convinced they need it because they were told so years ago. This is a live guideline area; rule 11 applies — verify against current ADA and American Heart Association guidance rather than a textbook edition or a patient's recollection.
- Diabetes, blood pressure, and recent cardiac events — each affects timing, anesthesia choice, and appointment planning.
The professional habit: ask about drugs and conditions by name, not by open question, and record what the patient says rather than what you infer. An assistant who flags an antiresorptive drug before an extraction has prevented a genuinely serious complication.
⚠ Medical emergencies: know the common one and the lethal one
Dental offices see medical emergencies regularly, and the assistant is frequently the person who notices first.
- Syncope — fainting — is by far the most common, usually anxiety-driven, and usually resolved by laying the patient flat with legs elevated. Recognizing it and responding calmly is basic competence.
- Anaphylaxis is the one that kills fastest, and the treatment is epinephrine, given early. Every assistant should know where the emergency kit is and what is in it, without looking, before the emergency happens.
- Other recurring events: hypoglycemia, angina and myocardial infarction, asthma exacerbation, seizure, airway obstruction or aspiration of a dental item, and local anesthetic overdose or intravascular injection.
Two practical points. CPR/BLS certification must be current and is required for clinical placement and by most employers. And the office emergency kit is only useful if it is checked — expired epinephrine is a recurring and entirely preventable finding in real practices.
⚠ Florida does not license dental assistants — know what the program actually buys
Stated plainly because it is rarely said: Florida does not require a dental assistant to be licensed, certified, or formally educated to work chairside. Florida law permits on-the-job training for general assisting duties, and many Florida practices hire and train assistants with no program at all. Completing this program is therefore not a legal prerequisite for employment.
What the program does buy is real and worth having: expanded functions and radiography. Florida regulates specific duties — dental radiography requires board-approved training under § 466.024, F.S. and Rule 64B5-9, F.A.C., and expanded functions require documented training — and formal program completion is the ordinary route to both, plus eligibility for the DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential, faster hiring, better starting pay, and a credible application to a dental hygiene program. Requirements are amended periodically; verify current rules with the Florida Board of Dentistry rather than relying on this guide.
Course format and position in the program
DEA0130 is a classroom course of 60 clock hours, taken partway through the PSAV program after the introductory courses and, at Daytona State, alongside a clinical practice course. Expect substantial memorization — head and neck anatomy and dental terminology are unavoidable — assessed by written examination, with practical identification on models and radiographs.
Students returning to school after time away frequently find this the hardest course in the program, and the reason is volume rather than difficulty: several sciences are compressed into 60 hours. The material rewards spaced study and self-quizzing far more than rereading. It also pays off immediately — the anatomy learned here is what makes chairside assisting comprehensible instead of rote.
⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — it does not transfer as college credit
The 0-level SCNS number identifies this as postsecondary adult vocational coursework, measured in clock hours with zero college credit. PSAV coursework does not transfer into a college-credit program the way a 1000- or 2000-level course does. What exists instead is articulation — Florida's statewide Gold Standard Career Pathways and local agreements may award credit toward a related A.S. for completing an entire PSAV program or occupational completion point, not for individual courses, and not automatically. Students who intend to continue into an A.S. or into a dental hygiene program should obtain a written evaluation from the receiving institution before assuming anything.
Clock-hour values in dental assisting also vary across Florida, because programs sequence their occupational completion points differently. Read the institution's own FLDOE curriculum framework and catalog rather than inferring hours from the course number.
