Course Description
CGS2100C – Computer Applications is a 3-credit course covering the productivity
software that essentially every professional role assumes competence in: word processing, spreadsheets,
databases, and presentation software. It is a common general education or program requirement across
business, health, and technical programs in Florida.
The course is frequently underestimated. Students arrive fluent with phones and web applications and
assume that transfers to desktop productivity software. It does not — particularly for
spreadsheets, where the gap between casual familiarity and genuine competence is large and
professionally consequential.
Content typically covers word processing beyond basic typing: styles, sections, headers,
templates, mail merge, tracked changes, and long-document management. Spreadsheets receive
the heaviest emphasis — formulas and functions, absolute versus relative references, logical and lookup
functions, charts, sorting and filtering, pivot tables, and data analysis. Databases cover
tables, relationships, queries, forms, and reports, and the underlying idea that structured data is not a
spreadsheet. Presentation software covers effective design as well as mechanics.
Most versions also cover file management, cloud storage and collaboration,
digital literacy topics including security and privacy basics, and increasingly the
integration between applications.
Instruction is hands-on and assessment is typically performance-based — students produce documents
rather than answer questions about them. Many Florida institutions deliver the course through a training and
assessment platform such as SIMnet or MyLab IT.

elsewhere.

Course-code and title variation
The course appears as CGS2100 and CGS2100C, and under the titles
Computer Applications, Microcomputer Applications for Business (Tallahassee State), and
Introduction to Computer Applications. Under SCNS the same number at the same level is equivalent
regardless of title. Related numbers — CGS1100, CGS1000 — exist
at some institutions with overlapping content but are not automatically interchangeable; confirm which number
a degree program requires.
General education and computer competency
At many Florida institutions this course satisfies a computer literacy or competency requirement, and some
allow it to be met by examination instead. Students who already have strong skills should ask whether a
proficiency examination or credit-by-exam option exists rather than sitting the course.
Spreadsheets are the part that matters, and the part students underestimate
Worth stating plainly. Word processing and presentation skills are broadly held; genuine spreadsheet
competence is not, and it is what employers actually screen for. The specific things that separate competent
users from casual ones are absolute versus relative references, lookup functions, and pivot tables —
each of which is unintuitive on first encounter and each of which is routinely required in business roles.
Students who focus their effort here get disproportionate return.
Assessment is performance-based
Most versions grade by having students produce actual files, often within a platform that checks the work
automatically. This means the course cannot be passed by reading — it requires doing the exercises.
Students who fall behind in a hands-on course of this kind find it hard to recover, because the skills are
cumulative.
