Course Description
CCJ4700, Methods of Research in Criminal Justice, is the research methods course of the criminal justice major. It teaches students to move from a question about crime, policing, courts or corrections to a defensible empirical answer — how to design a study that can actually test the claim, how to measure things that resist measurement, how to analyse the results, and how to read the field's own literature critically.
The University of West Florida, which titles it Research Design in Criminal Justice, describes a course "designed to give students an understanding of the basic principles and practices of empirical research as they are practiced in criminal justice and to enhance students' critical thinking skills with respect to criminal justice programs and proposals." Other Florida institutions describe an overview of research methodology and statistics with particular emphasis on the uses of research within the criminal justice system.
The phrase "criminal justice programs and proposals" points at what makes this course practically useful rather than merely academic. Criminal justice is a field in which policies are adopted on the strength of claims about what works — that a policing strategy reduces crime, that a programme reduces reoffending, that a sentencing change deters. Many of those claims do not survive evaluation. Scared Straight programmes increase delinquency; D.A.R.E. in its original form did not reduce drug use. The purpose of this course is to produce graduates who can tell the difference before the money is spent.
CCJ4700 is offered at approximately 10 Florida institutions and carries 3 credits with roughly 45 contact hours. It is a 4000-level course, usually taken in the junior or senior year, and it is a required core course in most Florida criminal justice and criminology majors.
Title variation. The number appears as Methods of Research in Criminal Justice (the statewide title, and FAU's Methods of Research), Research Methods in Criminal Justice (FAMU, FIU), Research Design in Criminal Justice (UWF), Research Methods and Analysis (FIU) and Introduction to Research Methods in Criminology (FSU). Same course; 3 credits at all of them.

- Crime Analyst and Intelligence Analyst — SOC 33-3021 variants and 13-1111. The most direct destination, and one where this course is the actual qualification: Florida police departments and sheriff's offices employ crime analysts, and the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) certification is the professional credential. Statistical and mapping skills are what get someone hired.
- Research Analyst and Program Evaluator — SOC 19-3094 and 13-1111, at the Florida Department of Corrections, the Department of Juvenile Justice, OPPAGA, and criminal justice research centres.
- Graduate study in criminology and criminal justice — SOC 19-3011 and 25-1113. This grade is read closely by admissions committees; Florida State University's criminology programme is among the top-ranked nationally, and UF, USF, UCF and FIU all offer graduate programmes.

- Police Officer and Detective — SOC 33-3051. ⚠ Florida certification runs through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission academy and the State Officer Certification Examination, not through a degree. But agencies increasingly staff analytical units from degree holders, and evidence-based policing has made research literacy a promotion asset.

- Grant Writer and Nonprofit Program Manager — SOC 27-3043 and 11-9151. Criminal justice grants require evaluation plans, and someone has to write them.
- Data Analyst outside criminal justice — SOC 15-2051. The methods and statistics transfer directly, and students often underestimate this.

Special Information
Position in the curriculum
CCJ4700 is a required core course in most Florida criminal justice and criminology majors, taken in the junior or senior year. It follows the introductory criminal justice survey and criminological theory, and it typically precedes or accompanies the senior seminar, capstone or internship. Where a separate statistics course exists in the major, this course either follows it or absorbs a substantial part of its content — see below.
Prerequisites narrative
UWF lists no prerequisite for CCJ4700. Most Florida programmes expect the introductory course (CCJ1020 or CCJ2020) and criminological theory first, and many require or strongly recommend a statistics course (STA2023, or a departmental statistics course) beforehand. Whether statistics is a prerequisite or is taught inside the course is the single biggest variation on this number, and it substantially changes the workload. A student arriving from a programme that separates them into a course that combines them will find the statistical load heavier than expected; the reverse is a common source of a thin statistics foundation going into graduate school. Junior or senior standing is a practical requirement given the 4000-level number, and some departments restrict enrolment to their own majors.
Course format and workload
Three credits, approximately 45 contact hours, no laboratory. Online and hybrid sections are widely available in Florida criminal justice programmes. Assessment typically combines examinations with a research proposal — the standard capstone deliverable for this course — plus article critiques and, where the course includes statistics, problem sets and software exercises. Expect six to nine hours a week outside class.
This is the course criminal justice students most often report as the hardest in the major, and the reason is worth naming: many students choose criminal justice expecting a practice-oriented degree and encounter, in the junior year, a course that is essentially applied social science with statistics. That reaction is normal. The material is also the most transferable in the degree — a graduate who can design a study and read a regression table has options that a graduate who cannot does not.
Note that UWF's version carries an additional designation: it "meets College-Level Communication Skills Requirement," meaning the written work there is graded as writing as well as content. That designation is institution-specific and does not transfer with the course.
Ethics — the parts specific to this field
Criminal justice research raises ethical problems that a general methods course does not. Prisoners and juveniles are protected populations under the Common Rule, and research involving them faces additional IRB scrutiny and, in Florida, Department of Corrections or Department of Juvenile Justice research approval on top of university review. Researchers who interview active offenders may learn of ongoing or planned crime, which raises questions about confidentiality that certificates of confidentiality only partly resolve. And agency partnerships create pressure toward findings the agency wants. Students should not arrange research contact with justice-involved populations independently; it requires IRB approval and supervision.
Transfer and articulation
CCJ4700 is a 4000-level SCNS course: the number is recognised statewide, but upper-division credit is not covered by the A.A. transfer guarantee and applicability inside a major is the receiving department's decision. Because it is a required core course rather than an elective at most universities, receiving departments scrutinise it more closely than they would an elective — and the statistics-inclusion difference described above is exactly what they ask about. Carry a syllabus. The course is generally not available before transfer from a Florida College System A.A., except at the Florida colleges offering bachelor's degrees in criminal justice; the lower-division preparation is the general education core plus CCJ1020/CCJ2020 and STA2023.
Course-code variations across Florida
The relevant family: CCJ4700 (this course), CCJ3700 and CCJ3701 (research methods numbered at the 3000 level at some institutions — FGCU uses CCJ3700, Meth Criminal Justice Research — and these are different numbers, so equivalency does not automatically follow), CCJ4701-range statistics or analysis courses, and CCJ4934/CCJ4940 seminars and internships. General statistics appears under STA, and social research methods under SYA (sociology) and POS (political science) — related but separately numbered, and generally not substitutable for a criminal justice major's core requirement.
AI Integration
Research methods is a course where AI tools are both genuinely useful and dangerous in ways that matter, and criminal justice adds a dimension most methods courses do not have: the field is actively deploying algorithmic systems whose evaluation is exactly what this course teaches.
AI as subject matter — the part unique to this field. Criminal justice agencies now use algorithmic risk assessment in pretrial release, sentencing and parole decisions; predictive policing systems to allocate patrol; and facial recognition in investigations. Every one of these is an empirical claim of the kind this course teaches students to evaluate: does the instrument predict what it claims to predict, in this population, and what are its error rates for whom? The COMPAS recidivism debate — in which a widely used risk instrument was shown to have different false-positive rates across racial groups, and in which the developers and critics turned out to be using different, mathematically incompatible definitions of fairness — is the standard teaching case, and it is a methods problem, not merely a policy one. Students who can reason about base rates, validation samples and competing fairness criteria are equipped to contribute to that debate; students who cannot are not.
Where AI helps a student. Language models explain statistical concepts a second way, write and debug SPSS syntax or R code, help structure a research proposal, and summarise a long report to orient you before reading it properly. For students whose barrier is the statistics rather than the criminal justice content, that is a real reduction in friction.
Where AI fails. Three failures matter here. Fabricated citations — models invent plausible criminology articles, and a research proposal's literature review is exactly where this is easy to miss and damaging to submit. Every citation must be found in the library databases before it goes in. Confidently wrong statistics — a model will produce analysis code and an interpretation, and the interpretation is frequently subtly wrong: the wrong test for the design, an ignored assumption, or a p-value described as the probability the hypothesis is false. Fabricated crime data — models generate plausible-looking crime rates and recidivism figures that do not correspond to any real source. UCR, NCVS and Florida Department of Corrections figures must come from the agency, not from a chatbot.
The researcher's responsibility. The name on the proposal owns every claim in it. Verify every citation, understand every analysis well enough to defend the choice of test, and source every statistic. In this field the standard has practical teeth: research findings inform decisions about liberty, and an analyst who cannot support a number should not present it.
Academic integrity. Policies vary by instructor; a common arrangement permits AI for code and concept explanation while prohibiting it for the proposal's substance. Read the syllabus, particularly where the course carries a writing designation as UWF's does.
