Introduction to Criminal Forensic Studies is a survey course introducing students to the multidisciplinary nature of forensics. Topics represent the different scientific disciplines that contribute to forensic work, and the course examines the role each discipline plays within criminal justice forensics.

The practical content with the most direct consequence for anyone entering a criminal justice career. Evidence that cannot be shown to have been continuously accounted for from collection to court may be excluded, regardless of what the analysis found.
The requirements are procedural and unforgiving: every transfer documented with who, when, and why; secure storage with controlled access; proper packaging for the evidence type (biological evidence in breathable packaging to prevent degradation, not plastic); and contamination prevention, which matters enormously for DNA given the sensitivity of current methods — an investigator's own DNA transferred to an item is a real and documented problem.
The quotation from Daytona State's related crime scene course states the principle exactly: if an investigator cannot recognize, collect, and package evidence properly, no amount of equipment or expertise in the laboratory will salvage the situation.
This course appears at roughly three institutions statewide, which is a small base. Content, credit value, and emphasis vary more than they would for a course taught at a dozen colleges, and one of the three may be a private institution rather than a Florida public college. Read your own institution's catalog description and syllabus rather than assuming this guide describes your section exactly, and have any transfer evaluated in writing.
Florida-specific material worth including: the FDLE crime laboratory system serves agencies statewide; Florida's medical examiner districts operate under Chapter 406, F.S. rather than a coroner system; and Florida maintains a state DNA database with statutory collection requirements. Florida has also been the site of significant post-conviction DNA exoneration work, which makes the reliability material locally concrete rather than abstract.
CCJ1080 is a lecture course, 3 credits and approximately 45 contact hours, consistent with this repository's other CCJ courses. Daytona State offers it in spring. Expect examinations, case study analysis, and — in stronger sections — a written evaluation of the evidentiary strength of a particular technique. Note that a survey course does not include laboratory work; students wanting hands-on crime scene processing should look at the CJE prefix.
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division.
