Basic Anatomy and Physiology for Health Careers explores the structure and function of the human body as applied to certificate health care programmes, covering an overview of all body systems. Delivery includes online components through the college's learning management system.

The practical fact the catalog states explicitly, and it has real planning consequences.
- This is PSAV clock-hour coursework with zero college credit. DSC's catalog says directly that it does not count toward an Associate of Arts degree, and PSAV hours do not transfer into a college-credit programme the way a 1000- or 2000-level course does.
- Federal aid limits preparatory hours, and satisfactory academic progress is measured against attempted hours whether or not they count toward a degree.
- If you may later want an A.S. or an R.N., know now that the college-credit route requires BSC1085C and BSC1086C (Anatomy and Physiology I and II) — a substantially longer and harder sequence with laboratory components. This course does not substitute for them.
- That is not a reason to avoid it. It is the correct course for a certificate programme, it is shorter and cheaper, and it gets you working sooner. The mistake is assuming it carries forward.
- Take transferable general education alongside where you can. If you are heading toward practical nursing with an eye on an LPN-to-RN bridge later, college-credit English, mathematics, and — eventually — BSC1085C/1086C are what will carry, while the PSAV hours will not.
- Ask an advisor, in writing, how these hours are treated for aid, for enrollment status, and for any future programme you are considering.
⚠ This subject is learned by retrieval, not by reading
The study strategy that determines whether this course is manageable, and students consistently use the wrong one.
Anatomy and physiology is high-volume and cumulative, and rereading the chapter and highlighting produces a strong feeling of familiarity and poor examination performance. The research on this is unusually clear:
- Test yourself instead of rereading. Retrieval practice — closing the book and trying to produce the answer — outperforms review by a wide margin, and it feels harder, which is why students avoid it.
- Space it out. Twenty minutes daily beats three hours on Sunday, and the effect is large. Anki automates the spacing and is free.
- Learn structure and function together. Memorizing names without knowing what the structure does makes both harder to retain; knowing that the alveoli are thin-walled because gas must diffuse across them means you never forget either fact.
- Draw it. Sketching a system from memory — badly is fine — is retrieval practice and spatial learning at once.
- Say it aloud. Explaining a process to someone else exposes the gaps that silent reading conceals, and you will have to pronounce these terms in a clinical setting.
- Use the terminology from day one. "Proximal" and "distal" instead of "near" and "far" — the vocabulary is the point, and it carries directly into the medical terminology and clinical courses that follow.
- Do not fall behind. The subject is cumulative; the cardiovascular system assumes the cells and tissues material, and a gap early compounds.
Note on the online components the catalog mentions: hybrid delivery gives flexibility and requires self-discipline. Students who treat the online portion as optional discover the gap at the first examination. Schedule the online work as though it were class time.
⚠ Learn it for the job, not just for the test
The framing that makes this course worth more than its clock hours.
- You will use this daily. Understanding why a patient with heart failure has swollen ankles, why a diabetic patient's feet need checking, or why a patient on a diuretic needs their potassium watched — all of it starts here.
- Normal is the reference for abnormal. Recognizing that something is wrong requires knowing what right looks like, which is the entire clinical value of this subject.
- It underpins medical terminology, which is the next course in most of these programmes, and terminology learned alongside the structures it names is retained; terminology learned as a word list is not.
- Homeostasis is the organizing idea. Almost every physiological mechanism is a feedback loop maintaining something within a range, and almost every disease is that regulation failing. Holding that frame makes the systems cohere rather than sitting as twelve separate topics.
- Connect systems. The kidneys regulate blood pressure; the lungs regulate pH; the endocrine system touches everything. The examination may test systems separately and the body does not work that way.
- Ask your programme what matters most. A practical nursing student and a medical assisting student need different emphases, and instructors will tell you if you ask.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
BSC0070 is 45 clock hours with zero college credit, delivered with online components, and offered every term. Assessment is typically by examination across the body systems, cumulative in structure.
As set out above, PSAV coursework does not transfer as college credit. What exists instead is articulation, awarded where it exists for completing a whole programme rather than for individual courses, and never automatically. The college-credit equivalents are BSC1085C and BSC1086C, and a student who may want a degree later should plan for those rather than expecting this course to carry.
