Course Description

BOT4850 is the botany of plants that act on the human body — those useful as medicines, and those that are toxic or psychoactive. Florida's statewide description is compact and covers all three: "study of agents that are produced by plants and that are toxic or psychoactive in human beings or are useful as remedies."

The subject is older than almost any other in a biology curriculum and more current than its name suggests. Plants remain the origin of a substantial share of clinical medicine — aspirin from willow, digoxin from foxglove, morphine from opium poppy, quinine from cinchona, paclitaxel from yew, artemisinin from sweet wormwood — and natural product chemistry continues to supply drug leads that synthetic libraries do not. At the same time the course covers a live public-health area: herbal supplements are consumed at scale, regulated in the United States as foods rather than drugs, and interact with prescription medicines in ways that send people to hospital.
