Course Description
Flora of Central Florida covers the identification and natural history of Florida's plants, with emphasis on the species of coastal wetlands. It is a field-based course: students learn to identify plants using keys and diagnostic characters, and perform field and laboratory work in collection and preservation, with field trips to sites in Volusia and Flagler Counties.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, BOT is the Botany prefix, and the 3000-level number places this in the upper division — the junior year of a biology, environmental science, or natural resources baccalaureate. Daytona State publishes it at 3 credits with prerequisites BOT1010C and BSC1010C, offered in spring with a $37 lab fee. It appears at approximately three Florida institutions, including the University of Florida and the University of North Florida.
Floristics — the systematic study of the plants of a region — is one of the few genuinely field-based courses in a biology curriculum, and it teaches a skill that is scarce and employable. Plant identification is a bottleneck skill in Florida environmental work: wetland delineation, mitigation monitoring, invasive species management, and listed-species surveys all require someone who can name what is growing there.
⚠ Title drift
Florida course inventories carry this number as "Local Flora." Daytona State's catalog title is "Flora of Central Florida," and the published description narrows further — emphasis on coastal wetland plants, with field trips to Volusia and Flagler Counties. That specificity is the nature of the subject: a floristics course is inherently about a place, and the species list differs between a course taught in the Panhandle, in Central Florida, and in the Keys. A student transferring the course, or choosing among institutions, should read the actual regional scope rather than the generic title.

Special Information
⚠ Plant identification is a genuinely scarce, genuinely employable skill
Worth stating because students underestimate it. Florida environmental consulting runs on people who can walk onto a site and identify what is growing there — and there are not enough of them. Wetland delineation under federal and state methodology requires vegetation identification; listed-species surveys require it; invasive species contracts require it; mitigation monitoring requires it.
Two things make the skill marketable rather than merely academic. Sight identification speed — a consultant cannot key every plant on a fifty-acre site, so the working skill is recognizing the common species instantly and keying only the unfamiliar. And knowing the indicator species for Florida's communities and for wetland status, which is what regulatory work actually turns on.
Students who want this career should take the collection and sight-identification components seriously and should build a personal reference collection and photo library. That work compounds; a botanist's value is largely accumulated familiarity.
⚠ Collection is regulated — get permission before you take anything
A legal point students frequently do not know, and it applies from the first field trip.
- Florida protects listed plant species. Under § 581.185, Florida Statutes, harvesting or destroying plants on the state's endangered, threatened, and commercially exploited list is restricted, and collection on another's land without the owner's written permission is prohibited.
- Public lands require permits. State parks, national parks and forests, wildlife management areas, water management district lands, and county preserves each have their own permitting process for scientific collection. Collecting without one is a violation regardless of intent.
- Private land requires the landowner's permission, and it is worth having in writing.
- Federal protections apply to federally listed species independently.
The professional norms are worth adopting alongside the legal ones: do not collect rare plants — photograph and record them instead; collect only what is needed and only from populations large enough to bear it; and a specimen without complete field data is worthless, so the label matters as much as the plant. Programs arrange the necessary permissions for course field trips, but a student doing independent work must obtain their own.
⚠ Florida field safety is not a formality
Coastal wetland fieldwork in Central Florida carries real hazards, and students should be equipped rather than surprised.
- Heat is the most likely thing to hurt you. Florida heat and humidity produce heat exhaustion quickly in people working in full sun; water, electrolytes, shade breaks, and early starts are the controls.
- Sun exposure — Florida has elevated skin cancer incidence, and field seasons accumulate.
- Venomous snakes — Florida has six, and cottonmouths in particular are associated with wetland habitats. Watch where you place hands and feet, wear appropriate footwear, and do not handle snakes.
- Alligators in freshwater and brackish systems; keep distance and be cautious at water margins.
- Insects — mosquitoes (with mosquito-borne disease present in Florida), ticks, chiggers, and fire ants.
- Plants that injure — poison ivy is abundant, and Florida adds poisonwood and Brazilian pepper (both in the same family as poison ivy) and the highly toxic manchineel in coastal areas. Learn to recognize them before the first field trip.
- Wetland footing — mud, holes, and sharp shell; and check tides when working coastal sites.
⚠ Nomenclature changes, and the Atlas is the arbiter
A practical point that frustrates students. Plant names change — molecular phylogenetics has substantially rearranged plant classification, and families, genera, and species names in an older field guide may no longer be current. Two plants can appear under three names across three references.
For Florida, the Atlas of Florida Plants is the practical authority: it is free, maintained, and tracks accepted names and synonymy for the state. The professional habit is to record what you observed and cite the source of the name you used, so that a record remains interpretable when the name changes again — which it will.
Course format, credits, and contact hours
Daytona State publishes BOT3151 at 3 credits with prerequisites BOT1010C and BSC1010C and a $37 lab fee, offered in spring. The 60 contact hours reported here follows the integrated-course convention for the C-suffixed form carried in Florida inventories; note that Daytona State publishes the number without the C. Confirm on your syllabus.
The course is field-intensive, and field trips are the substance rather than an enrichment — expect whole-day or weekend trips that may fall outside scheduled class time, and plan for transport, footwear, and sun protection. Assessment typically combines practical identification examinations (plants presented for naming, under time), a collection of properly prepared and labelled herbarium specimens, and field notebooks. The collection is the component students most underestimate; specimens must be gathered across the term as species come into flower, and one cannot be assembled at the end.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
BOT3151C is upper division: a 1000- or 2000-level botany or biology course will not substitute for it. Because floristics courses are regionally specific, a receiving institution may also want to know which flora was studied — keep the syllabus. Students planning graduate work in botany, ecology, or environmental science should note that field identification skill and a documented collection are genuinely differentiating on an application.
