Course Description

Carpentry and Masonry Technician Lab exists to provide students with knowledge of the construction industry including but not limited to applicable laws, building codes, contracts and specifications. Students continue to develop skills in carpentry and masonry.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, BCV is the Building Construction Vocational prefix and the leading zero identifies postsecondary adult vocational instruction. Daytona State publishes this at 150 clock hours, offered fall, with BCV0084L as prerequisite and a $21.25 laboratory fee.

⚠ Plan for the full-year shape of this programme

The Assistant courses (BCV0080L and BCV0084L) are offered in spring; the Technician courses (BCV0081L and BCV0082L) are offered in fall, and this course requires an Assistant course as prerequisite. The sequence therefore spans a full year, and ⚠ missing a term costs a year rather than a term. Confirm the current sequence with the programme before planning around it.

The inclusion of laws, codes, contracts, and specifications alongside the craft skills is the significant thing here, and it is what distinguishes a technician from a labourer. A carpenter who can read a specification, understands what the code requires, and knows what a contract obliges is on the path to supervision and eventually licensure — and in Florida, code knowledge is not general knowledge, because the wind provisions are unlike most of the country's.
