Special Information
⚠ Power tools injure people who have stopped thinking about them
- The injuries do not happen on day one. They happen at week ten, when the tool has become familiar and the attention has moved on — which is why habit, not knowledge, is what protects you.
- ⚠⚠ Never remove or defeat a guard. It is the single most common contributing factor in serious tool injuries, and it is always done for a reason that seemed good at the time.
- Eye protection every time, no exceptions. The injury takes a fraction of a second and it is frequently permanent.
- Know where the cut is going and where your other hand is. Support the work properly; a piece that moves during a cut is how hands are lost.
- Unplug or remove the battery before changing blades or bits, every time, including for a quick change.
- ⚠ Respect kickback. Circular saws, table saws, and grinders can throw the tool or the work at you faster than you can react — stance, grip, and blade choice are the defence.
- Inspect cords and tools before use, and take damaged equipment out of service rather than working around it.
- Hearing protection and dust protection are for damage you will not notice happening. Both losses are permanent and both are entirely preventable.
- Ask when you do not know. On a construction site the question costs nothing and the guess can cost a hand.
⚠⚠ Construction is among the most dangerous work in the United States — the safety content is the most important part of this course
- Construction accounts for a disproportionate share of workplace fatalities, and the pattern of how people are killed is well established and largely preventable.
- ⚠⚠ Falls are the leading cause of death in construction. Fall protection is required above the applicable height, it must be used every time, and the fatal falls are overwhelmingly from routine heights during short tasks — the ladder for two minutes, the roof edge for one more measurement.
- Ladders kill people at low heights. Correct angle, three points of contact, no top-step standing, and secured at the top — and never carry a load that prevents you holding on.
- ⚠⚠ Struck-by, caught-in, and electrocution complete the pattern. Overhead loads, trench collapse, and contact with energised lines account for most of the rest, and trench collapse in particular kills quickly and buries people who thought a shallow trench was safe.
- ⚠⚠ Respirable crystalline silica is a serious and permanent hazard. Cutting, grinding, or drilling concrete, masonry, and tile releases dust that causes irreversible lung disease. Wet cutting, extraction, and respiratory protection are required controls, not optional care — and the damage is cumulative and silent for years.
- Assume older buildings contain asbestos and lead until tested. Renovation and demolition are where exposure happens, and both are regulated.
- ⚠⚠ Heat illness is a Florida-specific and lethal hazard. Construction work in Florida summer produces genuine heat stroke, which is a medical emergency and kills. Water, rest, shade, and acclimatisation for new workers are the controls, and the highest-risk worker is the new one in their first week.
- Hearing loss and hand-arm vibration are permanent and gradual, which is why they are neglected. Protection has to be habitual.
- ⚠ Lockout/tagout and electrical safety are non-negotiable, and assumptions about what is de-energised have killed experienced people.
- ⚠ You have the right to a safe workplace and to raise concerns without retaliation. OSHA protects that right. Refusing genuinely dangerous work is lawful, and speaking up is the single most valuable safety habit on any site.
- Get your OSHA 10 card, and OSHA 30 if you can. Many Florida sites require it for entry, and it costs little.
⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — it carries no college credit
- The leading zero in the course number identifies it as postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) instruction, measured in clock hours rather than credit hours.
- ⚠⚠ Daytona State's catalog displays the clock-hour figure under a heading reading "Credit Hours". That is a rendering artefact of the catalog software, not a credit value. The number shown is hours of instruction; the college credit value of this course is zero.
- PSAV clock hours do not convert to college credit and do not transfer as credit to a degree programme. Do not plan a degree pathway on the assumption that they will.
- What they do produce is a workforce certificate and job-ready skill, which is the actual point — and in the construction trades that is a genuine and immediate route to employment.
- ⚠ Articulation agreements sometimes exist that let a completed PSAV certificate count toward a related A.S. degree. They are specific, they vary by programme and institution, and they must be confirmed in advance — ask an advisor rather than assuming.
- Financial aid for clock-hour programmes works differently from credit programmes, with its own eligibility and disbursement rules. Confirm with the financial aid office before enrolling.
- Clock-hour programmes have attendance requirements — hours must actually be completed, and absence directly delays completion in a way it does not in a credit course.
⚠⚠ Florida licenses construction contracting — know what you may and may not do
- Construction contracting in Florida is regulated under Chapter 489, Florida Statutes, through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Construction Industry Licensing Board (Part I) and the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (Part II).
- ⚠⚠ Contracting without the required licence is an offence in Florida, and enforcement is real. It carries increased penalties during a declared state of emergency — which in Florida means after every hurricane, exactly when unlicensed work is most tempting and most harmful.
- Working as an employee of a licensed contractor is lawful; holding yourself out as a contractor is not unless you are licensed or exempt. That distinction is the one graduates most need to understand.
- Licences are held at state certified or state registered level, and there are separate categories — general, building, residential, roofing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and more — each with its own scope.
- Licensure typically requires documented experience as well as examination, which is why the sequence is normally: certificate, then work under a licensed contractor, then licensure.
- Local jurisdictions add their own requirements, including competency cards and registration in some categories.
- ⚠ Permits and inspections are legal requirements, not formalities. Unpermitted work creates liability, insurance problems, and obstacles when a property is sold.
- Registered apprenticeship is a strong route in the licensed trades — paid, structured, and it produces the documented experience licensure requires.
