Plumbing Apprentice 10 Lab - OJT equips students with practical skills in installing compressed air piping, corrosive resistant waste piping, and medical gas piping systems, covering private waste disposal and water supply systems, swimming pool and hot tub installation, and refrigeration equipment and applications including supermarket installations, low temperature systems, compound compression, cascade systems, and ultra-low temperature setups, together with pneumatic controls and lithium bromide and water-ammonia absorption cooling.

⚠⚠ Medical gas piping — a separate certification, and lives depend on it
- Medical gas systems deliver oxygen and other gases directly to patients, including in operating theatres and intensive care. A cross-connected or contaminated system can kill patients, and has.
- ⚠⚠ Installing medical gas piping requires separate certification. Under NFPA 99, brazing and installation of medical gas systems must be performed by personnel qualified to the applicable ASSE 6000-series standards — installer certification is a distinct credential from your plumbing qualification and you may not lawfully do this work without it.
- Verification is performed by an independent party, not the installer, precisely because self-certification is inadequate where patient lives are at stake.
- Brazing must be done under a continuous nitrogen purge. Without it, copper oxide forms inside the pipe and particulate reaches patient outlets. This is not a quality preference; it is a patient safety requirement.
- Materials are specific and dedicated — cleaned-for-oxygen-service tube, capped until installed, and never substituted with ordinary stock.
- Cleanliness is absolute. Oil or grease in an oxygen system is a fire and explosion hazard, and hydrocarbon contamination of oxygen piping has caused fatal fires.
- Labelling and zone valve identification must be exact, because in an emergency someone will shut a valve based on the label.
- Never work on a live medical gas system without the facility's authorisation and procedure, and never assume a line is out of service.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies emphatically. Verify current NFPA 99 requirements and ASSE certification categories — this is among the most tightly regulated work a plumber can do.
⚠ Private waste disposal and pools — permitting and health regulation
- Onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems are separately regulated in Florida, with permitting and inspection requirements distinct from the plumbing code, and installation frequently requires a separate registration or licence.
- Site conditions govern the design — soil, water table, and setbacks from wells and surface water. Florida's high water table makes this genuinely constraining in much of the state.
- A failing system contaminates groundwater and surfaces sewage, which is a public health matter rather than a nuisance.
- Private water supply wells have their own requirements, including separation from waste systems and backflow protection.
- Pools and spas are regulated for both safety and sanitation. Suction entrapment protection is a life-safety requirement with a specific standard, and it exists because children have died.
- Cross-connection protection is critical on pool fill lines and on any chemical feed system.

⚠ This is a combined plumbing and pipefitting programme. The content covers far more than domestic plumbing: hydronic heating and cooling, steam systems, refrigeration and air conditioning, pumps, welding and brazing, controls, and instrumentation. Read the level descriptions before assuming what the trade involves — a substantial share of the work is mechanical piping rather than fixtures and drains.
⚠⚠ How a registered apprenticeship works — and the part people get wrong
- You are a paid employee first and a student second. Apprentices work full time for a contractor and attend classroom instruction alongside it, typically evenings. Earn while you learn, no student debt.
- Wages step up on a schedule as a percentage of the journeyman rate, so advancement is directly financial.
- Two mandatory components — related classroom instruction (123 clock hours per level here) and on-the-job training hours (the paired
L courses, 640–680 hours each). Neither substitutes for the other, and you can pass every class and still not complete if the OJT hours are short.
- Hours accrue only while you are employed by a participating contractor. ⚠ If you are laid off, your hours stop. Tell the sponsor immediately; re-placement is part of what they exist for.
- Breadth is required, not just total hours. Standards specify work processes — categories you must actually be exposed to, such as drainage, water supply, gas, fixtures, service work, and welding. Years spent on one kind of work do not satisfy the requirement, and nobody will notice the gap for you.
- ⚠ This is a fifteen-level programme. Longer than the electrical apprenticeships at this institution, which run to twelve — expect roughly five years.
- Sponsor-run and competitive. Entry is controlled by a joint committee, contractor association, or employer, and there are typically more applicants than places. Reapplying is normal.
- Document your hours accurately and keep your own copy. Employers change and records are lost; your file is what protects your progress.
⚠ How to actually learn on the job
- The journeyman you work with is the most valuable resource in the programme.
- Ask why, not just how. Learning that a fitting goes in a particular way is worth little; learning why, and when it would be wrong, is the trade.
- Ask at the right moment — not mid-task on something difficult. Knowing when to ask is professional judgement.
- Watch experienced hands work. Layout, sequence, and how someone organises a task before starting are learned by observation and rarely explained.
- Take correction without arguing. How you receive it is noticed and reported on.
- Say plainly when you have not done something before. Bluffing on gas, medical gas, or a live system is dangerous and is spotted immediately.
- Do the unglamorous work well. Digging, carrying, and cleaning up are how apprentices earn the right to be taught.
- Show up early, every day. In this trade reliability outranks talent.
- Keep a notebook — what you learned, what you got wrong, code sections you looked up. It becomes your journeyman examination revision.
- Record your hours and work processes as you go, and keep your own copy.
⚠⚠ The plumbing code — and why plumbers protect public health
- Plumbing is a public health profession before it is a construction trade. The codes exist because contaminated water and improperly vented waste have historically killed large numbers of people, and the rules encode hard-won lessons.
- Florida adopts the Florida Building Code — Plumbing, based on a model code with state amendments, and local jurisdictions may amend further. ⚠ The edition in force where you work is what governs, and it is not always the newest.
- Learn to navigate the code rather than memorise it. Journeyman examinations are typically open-book and timed, so lookup speed is what is actually tested. Tab your book and practise against a clock.
- Understand the why behind the rules. Trap seals, venting, and air gaps all exist to keep sewer gas out of buildings and contamination out of drinking water — and a plumber who understands the purpose makes better decisions where the code is silent.
- Fixture units, pipe sizing, and slope are not arbitrary. Under-sloped drainage does not carry solids; over-sloped drainage outruns them. Both block.
- Permits and inspections are required for most work, and pulling a permit requires a licensed contractor.

⚠⚠ The hazards that actually kill people in this trade
- ⚠⚠ Trench collapse is the one that kills plumbers. A cubic yard of soil weighs roughly as much as a small car, and a collapse buries a worker faster than anyone can react — you cannot dig someone out in time. Protective systems — sloping, benching, shoring, or a trench box — are required at depth, and spoil must be kept back from the edge. Never enter an unprotected trench, whatever the schedule pressure and however briefly.
- ⚠⚠ Confined spaces — sewers, manholes, tanks, pits, and vaults. Hydrogen sulphide in sewers is lethal and deadens your sense of smell at dangerous concentrations, so you cannot rely on the smell warning you. Oxygen can also be displaced or consumed. Permit, atmospheric testing, ventilation, and an attendant — and never enter to rescue someone without proper equipment, because would-be rescuers make up a large share of confined space deaths.
- Sewage and greywater carry pathogens. Gloves, eye protection, hand washing before eating, and covering cuts. Hepatitis A vaccination is worth discussing with a doctor.
- Steam and hot water burn severely. Steam at pressure is invisible near the leak and will cut skin — never search for a steam leak with your hand.
- Fuel gas leaks explode. Test every joint, know the smell, and know the evacuation and shut-off procedure before you start work.
- Cutting, brazing, and welding bring fire, fume, ultraviolet, and compressed gas hazards — hot work needs a fire watch, and the fire frequently starts after the crew has left.
- Old buildings contain lead and asbestos. Lead solder in old potable lines, asbestos in pipe lagging. Do not disturb suspect insulation — stop and report it.
- Heavy lifting and awkward postures end plumbing careers early. Use the equipment, get help, and protect your back and knees from year one.
- ⚠ Florida heat — attics, crawl spaces, unshaded trenches. Confusion in the heat is an emergency, not tiredness, and the affected person is usually the last to notice.
⚠⚠ Florida plumbing licensing — journeyman is county, contracting is state
- ⚠ Journeyman plumber licensing in Florida is generally handled at county or municipal level, not by the state. Requirements, examinations, and reciprocity vary between jurisdictions, and a journeyman card from one county may not be recognised in the next.
- Plumbing contracting is licensed by the state under Chapter 489, Part I, Florida Statutes, through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Construction Industry Licensing Board.
- Certified and registered contractor licences differ in where you may work — statewide against specific local jurisdictions.
- You may work as a plumber for a licensed contractor without holding a contractor licence yourself — that is how essentially everyone works.
- Contracting on your own account without the required licence is unlicensed contracting, an offence with escalating penalties.
- Contractor licensure requires documented experience, examination, financial responsibility evidence, and insurance. The realistic sequence is apprenticeship, then journeyman, then contractor — not apprenticeship then business.
