Course Description

Plumbing Apprentice 5 Lab - OJT enables students to demonstrate mastery of oxy-fuel cutting and shielded metal arc welding fundamentals while applying knowledge of ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and electric motors relevant to the piping trade, together with intermediate mathematics and proper conservation and safe handling practices for refrigerants.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, BCA is the Building Construction Apprenticeship prefix, the L suffix marks this as the on-the-job training component, and the 0000-level number marks it as PSAV clock-hour instruction. Daytona State publishes it at 680 clock hours, offered Fall, as the OJT component of level 5. ⚠ It carries no college credit.

Welding is where this trade's earnings diverge. A pipefitter who can weld to a qualified procedure has access to industrial, process, and power work that a non-welder does not — and welder qualification is a separate credential with its own rules.

⚠ Note on the hour figure: this course is published at 680 clock hours where most comparable terms in this prefix read 679.8. The figure is the catalog's own.

The Daytona State plumbing apprenticeship sequence — fifteen levels

Classroom courses run at 123 clock hours each; the paired Lab-OJT courses carry the on-the-job training hours, published between 639.9 and 680. This is a fifteen-level programme — longer than the twelve-level electrical apprenticeships at this institution.

⚠ The catalog publishes the same nominal hour figures two ways. Most summer terms read 639.9 and most fall and spring terms 679.8, but four courses are published as the rounded 640 or 680. The figures above are the catalog's own in every case. Confirm your actual required hours with the sponsor — what counts is the hours you work and record.

⚠ This is a combined plumbing and pipefitting programme. The content covers far more than domestic plumbing: hydronic heating and cooling, steam systems, refrigeration and air conditioning, pumps, welding and brazing, controls, and instrumentation. Read the level descriptions before assuming what the trade involves — a substantial share of the work is mechanical piping rather than fixtures and drains.
