Course Description
Electrical Academy Union Apprentice 11 Lab-OJT is designed for electrical union apprenticeship students to develop competencies in utilising the National Electrical Code in day-to-day electrical installations. Students become familiar with the articles and sections of the NEC when preparing for the Journeyman Block Exam, and the course covers electrical calculations, review of hazardous locations, and understanding general requirements for electrical installations in health care facilities.

Special Information
⚠⚠ The journeyman examination tests navigation speed, not memory
- The examination is open-book and timed, which means it measures how fast you can find and apply the right article. An apprentice who knows the answer but takes four minutes to locate it will fail.
- Tab your code book and always tab it the same way, so the layout becomes muscle memory.
- Learn the structure, not the contents. Knowing Chapter 3 is wiring methods, Article 250 is grounding, and Chapter 9 holds the tables gets you to the right region instantly.
- Practise against a clock with the exact book you will be permitted to bring.
- Calculations are where time is lost — load calculations, conductor sizing, voltage drop, motor circuits, box and conduit fill. Drill them.
- Read the exact words. "Shall" is mandatory, "shall be permitted" is optional, and an exception can reverse the rule above it.
- Watch the Article 100 definitions — code terms have precise meanings that differ from everyday usage.
- ⚠ Confirm which code edition the examination is based on, and which jurisdiction administers it — in Florida journeyman licensing is generally county-level.
- Sit it soon after completing. Pass rates fall the longer people wait.
⚠⚠ Hazardous locations and health care — where getting it wrong is catastrophic
- These two subjects are named in this course because their requirements are unusually strict and unusually consequential.
- Hazardous locations are classified by what is present and how often — flammable gases, combustible dust, or ignitible fibres, and whether they are present normally or only under fault conditions. The classification determines the wiring method, and it is not a judgement you make on site.
- Seals, explosion-proof fittings, and approved equipment exist to prevent an ignition source reaching an explosive atmosphere. An improperly made seal or a substituted fitting defeats the entire protection scheme.
- Never substitute equipment in a classified area. Listed equipment is listed for a specific classification, and "it fits" is not the test.
- Health care facilities have their own article with requirements for patient care spaces, redundant grounding, isolated power systems, and essential electrical systems.
- Redundant equipment grounding in patient care spaces exists because patients may be directly connected to equipment and are far more vulnerable to small currents than a healthy person.
- Essential electrical systems must keep life-safety equipment running through a utility failure, and their branches and transfer requirements are prescribed.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies. Both areas are code-intensive and revised; verify against the adopted edition and the authority having jurisdiction.
⚠⚠ On-the-job training hours are the binding constraint — not your grades
- This is the part apprentices most often misunderstand. A registered apprenticeship has two separate obligations — related classroom instruction and on-the-job training hours — and neither substitutes for the other.
- You can pass every class and still not complete the apprenticeship if you have not accumulated the required OJT hours. The classroom course is 99 hours; this OJT course is several hundred. The hours on the job are the bulk of the programme.
- Hours accrue only while you are employed by a participating contractor. ⚠ If you are laid off, your hours stop — and in a trade with cyclical work that is a real risk. Tell the sponsor immediately if you lose your placement; they exist partly to help re-place you.
- Breadth is required, not just total hours. Apprenticeship standards specify work processes — categories of work you must actually be exposed to, such as conduit installation, terminations, motor controls, service work, and troubleshooting. Spending three years doing only one task does not satisfy the requirement, however many hours it produces.
- ⚠ Ask for the work you are missing. If your hours are concentrated in one area, say so to your foreman and to the sponsor. Contractors will usually accommodate it, and nobody will notice the gap for you.
- Document your hours accurately and on time. The record is what proves completion; reconstructing months of it later is difficult and sometimes impossible.
- Keep your own copy of everything. Employers change, sponsors change staff, and records are lost — your own file is what protects your progress.
- Report hours honestly. Falsifying an hour record is grounds for removal from the programme and it undermines the credential for everyone.
⚠ How to actually learn on the job — the apprentice's real curriculum
- Your journeyman is the most valuable resource in the programme, and how you work with them determines what you get out of four years.
- Ask why, not just how. Learning that a connection is made a particular way is worth little; learning why that method is used, and when it would be wrong, is the trade.
- Ask at the right moment. Not mid-task on something difficult, not when someone is troubleshooting under pressure — during a break, or on the drive. Knowing when to ask is itself professional judgement.
- Watch the experienced hands work. Layout, sequence, and how someone organises a task before starting are learned by observation and almost never explained.
- Take correction without arguing. Being shown a better way is the point of the arrangement, and how you receive it is noticed and reported on.
- Volunteer for unfamiliar work, and say plainly when you have not done something before. Bluffing on a live electrical task is dangerous and it is spotted immediately.
- Do the unglamorous work well. Material handling, clean-up, and fetching are how first-year apprentices earn the right to be taught, and doing them cheerfully is remembered.
- Show up early, every day, and be ready to work. In this trade reliability outranks talent, and it is the single largest determinant of how you are treated.
- Keep a notebook. Write down what you learned, what you got wrong, and the code articles you looked up. It becomes your journeyman examination revision.
- Connect the classroom to the job deliberately. Look for this term's classroom content in what you are installing, and ask about it — that connection is the whole design of an apprenticeship.

The hour figure generally tracks the term rather than the level — fall and spring terms are published at 679.8 hours and summer terms at 639.9, reflecting the shorter summer term. ⚠ That pattern holds for ten of the twelve courses; BCA0339L (summer, 679.8) and BCA0391L (spring, 639.9) are published against it. The figures above are the catalog's own in every case. Confirm your actual required hours with the sponsor, since what counts is the hours you work and record, not the catalog figure.
⚠⚠ Arc flash and shock — and the apprentice's particular exposure
- Electricity gives no second chance, and apprentices are at particular risk because they are least able to recognise a dangerous situation and least confident about refusing one.
- ⚠⚠ Arc flash is not shock. An arcing fault is an explosion — temperatures several times hotter than the surface of the sun, a pressure blast, molten metal, and permanent hearing damage. It burns through ordinary clothing instantly and synthetic fabric melts into skin.
- Arc-rated clothing is not optional near energised equipment, and cotton is not arc-rated. NFPA 70E defines the boundaries, the risk assessment, and the required protection.
- De-energise wherever possible. Working energised requires justification, a written procedure, and permission — and schedule pressure is not a justification, though it is exactly when incidents happen.
- Lock out, tag out, and verify yourself. Test the meter on a known live source, test the conductor, then test the meter again. A failed meter reading zero has killed people.
- Your own lock, your own key. Never remove another person's lock and never let anyone remove yours.
- ⚠⚠ You may refuse unsafe work. An apprentice told to do something they believe is unsafe should say so — to the journeyman, the foreman, and if necessary the sponsor. A good contractor supports that; one that does not is a contractor the sponsor needs to know about. No schedule is worth an injury, and you will not be the first apprentice to raise it.
- Falls kill more construction workers than anything else, and electricians spend a great deal of time on ladders, lifts, and scaffolds.
- ⚠ Florida heat is a genuine hazard — attics, unconditioned buildings, and outdoor summer work. Confusion in the heat is an emergency, not tiredness, and the person affected is usually the last to notice.
- Report every injury and near miss, including your own mistakes. Concealed near misses become someone else's injury.
⚠⚠ Florida electrical licensing — journeyman is county, contracting is state
- ⚠ Journeyman electrician licensing in Florida is generally handled at county or municipal level, not by the state. Requirements, examinations, and reciprocity vary between jurisdictions, and a journeyman card from one county may not be recognised in the next.
- Electrical contracting is licensed by the state under Chapter 489, Part II, Florida Statutes, through DBPR and the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board.
- You may work as an electrician for a licensed contractor without holding a contractor licence yourself — that is how essentially everyone works.
- Contracting on your own account without the required licence is an offence with escalating penalties.
- Contractor licensure requires documented experience, examination, financial responsibility evidence, and insurance. The realistic sequence is apprenticeship, then journeyman, then contractor.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies. Licence categories, experience requirements, and county rules change — verify with DBPR and with the county where you will work.
⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour apprenticeship course — it carries no college credit
- The leading zero in the course number is the signal. Under the Florida Statewide Course Numbering System, a 0000-level number denotes postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) instruction, measured in clock hours rather than semester credit hours. These courses carry zero college credit.
- ⚠ A catalog may display the clock-hour figure under a heading that reads "credit hours." It is not credits — a 0000-level course showing 679.8 is 679.8 hours of on-the-job training, which is roughly a working year at apprentice hours.
- PSAV hours do not transfer as college credit to an associate or bachelor's degree, and they do not satisfy general education requirements.
- What this programme produces is a journeyman electrician — a nationally portable, well-paid skilled trade credential earned while working and being paid, without student debt.
- Some institutions offer articulation from apprenticeship completion into a related associate or construction management degree. ⚠ These arrangements are institution-specific and they change — get it in writing before assuming.
- Financial aid rules differ for clock-hour programmes, though apprenticeship tuition is frequently paid or heavily subsidised by the sponsor.
