BCA0357 – Electricity 8 is the eighth and final related-instruction course in Florida's registered electrical apprenticeship, normally taken in the second half of the fourth year. Florida's electrical demand is driven by sustained population growth, continuous construction, data center and industrial investment, storm rebuilding, and solar installation. Electricians appear on the state's high-demand occupation lists, work is distributed across every metro, and it is one of the few well-paid careers that cannot be outsourced or performed remotely.
A registered apprentice is an employee first and a student second. You are hired, you earn a wage from the first week — commonly starting around 40 to 50 percent of the journeyworker rate and stepping up at defined intervals as hours and coursework accumulate — and related instruction is typically paid for by the sponsor or provided at minimal cost. A four-year apprentice finishes with four years of wages, four years of experience, a nationally recognized credential, and no student debt.
The trade-off is real: four years of working full time and attending class evenings, physical work outdoors in Florida heat, and an occupational rather than academic credential. But for a student weighing a degree against a trade, the financial comparison over the first decade is closer than most advising suggests, and frequently favors the trade.

Local journeyworker examinations in Florida are open-book code exams under time pressure, which means they do not test memory — they test navigation speed and calculation fluency. Both are fixable, and this is the term to fix them. Work timed code-lookup drills with the same tabbed book you will bring; work calculation problems until the method is automatic rather than reconstructed; and confirm with your local licensing office which code edition the exam is based on and which references are permitted. Two distinct credentials, and the geography matters. Completing the apprenticeship earns a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship from the State of Florida and journeyworker status. But journeyworker licensing in Florida is generally local — counties and municipalities issue journeyman electrician cards through their own examinations, so requirements differ across the state and a card from one jurisdiction may not be honored in another.
Contractor licensure is state-level, through the Florida Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board at DBPR, as either a Certified electrical contractor (valid statewide) or a Registered contractor (valid only where locally licensed). Both require documented experience, examination, financial responsibility, and insurance. Nobody memorizes the National Electrical Code — it is roughly 900 pages and is revised every three years. What a professional develops is the ability to find the applicable article quickly, read it precisely, and understand how the definitions in Article 100 and the general requirements in Chapter 1 modify everything after. Tab your code book and keep the same tabs for years; learn the chapter structure; always read the exceptions, which is where most field errors originate; and note that Florida adopts the NEC through the Florida Building Code with amendments, which govern where they differ.
The professional transition this course exists to prepare for, and it is larger than the credential suggests. As an apprentice, someone else is accountable for the work. As a journeyworker, you are — for code compliance, for the safety of what you install, for the apprentice working beside you, and increasingly for the schedule.
Three habits worth adopting deliberately before the transition: look it up rather than assuming, because the confidence that comes with four years of experience is exactly what produces the first serious mistake; say when you do not know, which is what separates a professional from someone who guesses on a live system; and teach the apprentice, because you were taught, and because a foreman notices who does.
Practical career advice at the point of completion. The journeyworker card is the beginning of a career rather than the end of training. The electricians who advance keep adding: controls and instrumentation, NFPA 70E and arc flash, solar and energy storage, fire alarm licensure, and eventually estimating and contractor licensure. The code itself changes every three years, so continuing education is not optional in practice even where it is not required.
In Florida specifically, the growth areas are industrial controls, data centers, solar and storage, and theme park ride and show control systems — all of which pay above general commercial work and all of which reward the fourth-year material rather than the first-year material.
Underrated advice, and it is what the L companion course exists to document. The apprenticeship credential rests on documented on-the-job hours across defined work processes — so much of this task, so much of that one — not merely on total time employed. Sponsors track this, but records get lost, employers change, and committees turn over. Keep your own copy of every hour report, class grade, and module completion. The same records later support your local journeyworker application and your eventual contractor license application, and an apprentice who has to reconstruct four years of history from memory will lose time and possibly hours.
