That is not a gap so much as an accurate description of what an OJT course is. The content of an on-the-job training term is the work the apprentice is actually assigned, under a journeyman, on live projects — and it varies by contractor and by what is being built that year. The outcomes below therefore describe the obligations and competencies common to every OJT term, together with the level's classroom content where the catalog names it. Confirm the specific work-process requirements with your sponsor, since those are what govern completion.
⚠ Motor control troubleshooting is the skill that pays — learn to read the ladder
- Reading a ladder diagram fluently separates an electrician who can fix a machine from one who can only install it, and maintenance departments pay for the difference.
- Trace the control circuit, not the power circuit, when a motor will not start. Most faults are a stop button, an overload, an interlock, or a safety that opened for a reason.
- Understand the seal-in. Once you genuinely understand why a start-stop circuit holds itself in, most control circuits become readable.
- Check for voltage along each rung until it disappears — the fault is between the last good point and the first bad one.
- Ask why the safety opened. Resetting an overload without investigating means it trips again, or something worse happens.
- Never bypass an interlock or safety to make a machine run. A bypass left in place is a hazard you created.
- Read the nameplate — voltage, full-load amps, service factor, and the connection diagram are printed on the motor.
- ⚠ Variable frequency drives hold DC bus charge after disconnection. Observe the manufacturer's stated discharge time before opening one.
⚠⚠ On-the-job training hours are the binding constraint — not your grades
- This is the part apprentices most often misunderstand. A registered apprenticeship has two separate obligations — related classroom instruction and on-the-job training hours — and neither substitutes for the other.
- You can pass every class and still not complete the apprenticeship if you have not accumulated the required OJT hours. The classroom course is 99 hours; this OJT course is several hundred. The hours on the job are the bulk of the programme.
- Hours accrue only while you are employed by a participating contractor. ⚠ If you are laid off, your hours stop — and in a trade with cyclical work that is a real risk. Tell the sponsor immediately if you lose your placement; they exist partly to help re-place you.
- Breadth is required, not just total hours. Apprenticeship standards specify work processes — categories of work you must actually be exposed to, such as conduit installation, terminations, motor controls, service work, and troubleshooting. Spending three years doing only one task does not satisfy the requirement, however many hours it produces.
- ⚠ Ask for the work you are missing. If your hours are concentrated in one area, say so to your foreman and to the sponsor. Contractors will usually accommodate it, and nobody will notice the gap for you.
- Document your hours accurately and on time. The record is what proves completion; reconstructing months of it later is difficult and sometimes impossible.
- Keep your own copy of everything. Employers change, sponsors change staff, and records are lost — your own file is what protects your progress.
- Report hours honestly. Falsifying an hour record is grounds for removal from the programme and it undermines the credential for everyone.
⚠ How to actually learn on the job — the apprentice's real curriculum
- Your journeyman is the most valuable resource in the programme, and how you work with them determines what you get out of four years.
- Ask why, not just how. Learning that a connection is made a particular way is worth little; learning why that method is used, and when it would be wrong, is the trade.
- Ask at the right moment. Not mid-task on something difficult, not when someone is troubleshooting under pressure — during a break, or on the drive. Knowing when to ask is itself professional judgement.
- Watch the experienced hands work. Layout, sequence, and how someone organises a task before starting are learned by observation and almost never explained.
- Take correction without arguing. Being shown a better way is the point of the arrangement, and how you receive it is noticed and reported on.
- Volunteer for unfamiliar work, and say plainly when you have not done something before. Bluffing on a live electrical task is dangerous and it is spotted immediately.
- Do the unglamorous work well. Material handling, clean-up, and fetching are how first-year apprentices earn the right to be taught, and doing them cheerfully is remembered.
- Show up early, every day, and be ready to work. In this trade reliability outranks talent, and it is the single largest determinant of how you are treated.
- Keep a notebook. Write down what you learned, what you got wrong, and the code articles you looked up. It becomes your journeyman examination revision.
- Connect the classroom to the job deliberately. Look for this term's classroom content in what you are installing, and ask about it — that connection is the whole design of an apprenticeship.

⚠⚠ Arc flash and shock — and the apprentice's particular exposure
- Electricity gives no second chance, and apprentices are at particular risk because they are least able to recognise a dangerous situation and least confident about refusing one.
- ⚠⚠ Arc flash is not shock. An arcing fault is an explosion — temperatures several times hotter than the surface of the sun, a pressure blast, molten metal, and permanent hearing damage. It burns through ordinary clothing instantly and synthetic fabric melts into skin.
- Arc-rated clothing is not optional near energised equipment, and cotton is not arc-rated. NFPA 70E defines the boundaries, the risk assessment, and the required protection.
- De-energise wherever possible. Working energised requires justification, a written procedure, and permission — and schedule pressure is not a justification, though it is exactly when incidents happen.
- Lock out, tag out, and verify yourself. Test the meter on a known live source, test the conductor, then test the meter again. A failed meter reading zero has killed people.
- Your own lock, your own key. Never remove another person's lock and never let anyone remove yours.
- ⚠⚠ You may refuse unsafe work. An apprentice told to do something they believe is unsafe should say so — to the journeyman, the foreman, and if necessary the sponsor. A good contractor supports that; one that does not is a contractor the sponsor needs to know about. No schedule is worth an injury, and you will not be the first apprentice to raise it.
- Falls kill more construction workers than anything else, and electricians spend a great deal of time on ladders, lifts, and scaffolds.
- ⚠ Florida heat is a genuine hazard — attics, unconditioned buildings, and outdoor summer work. Confusion in the heat is an emergency, not tiredness, and the person affected is usually the last to notice.
- Report every injury and near miss, including your own mistakes. Concealed near misses become someone else's injury.
⚠⚠ Florida electrical licensing — journeyman is county, contracting is state
- ⚠ Journeyman electrician licensing in Florida is generally handled at county or municipal level, not by the state. Requirements, examinations, and reciprocity vary between jurisdictions, and a journeyman card from one county may not be recognised in the next.
- Electrical contracting is licensed by the state under Chapter 489, Part II, Florida Statutes, through DBPR and the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board.
- You may work as an electrician for a licensed contractor without holding a contractor licence yourself — that is how essentially everyone works.
- Contracting on your own account without the required licence is an offence with escalating penalties.
