Course Description

Electrical Academy Union Apprentice 8 is designed for electrical union apprenticeship students to gain competencies in transformers, fire alarm systems, telephone and security basics, and structured cabling basics.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, BCA is the Building Construction Apprenticeship prefix, and the 0000-level number marks this as PSAV clock-hour instruction. Daytona State publishes it at 99 clock hours, offered Spring, as level 8 of the union electrical apprenticeship. ⚠ It carries no college credit.

This term broadens the trade beyond power. Fire alarm, security, telephone, and structured cabling are low-voltage systems, and they are increasingly a large share of an electrical contractor's work — frequently more profitable than power installation and requiring separate skills and, in Florida, separate licence categories.

Fire alarm in particular is life-safety work governed by NFPA 72 and the Florida Fire Prevention Code, inspected separately, and unforgiving of poor practice. An electrician who is competent across both power and low voltage is substantially more employable than one who is not.

The Daytona State union electrical apprenticeship classroom sequence

Daytona State publishes these as a numbered sequence, each at 99 clock hours. The course number maps to the apprenticeship level by a consistent offset — BCA033n is level n+1:

CourseLevelTermPrincipal content
BCA03301FallBasic electricity, installation methods, first aid and safety, DC theory
BCA03312SpringJob safety and OSHA, basic wiring, electrical calculations, materials, blueprint symbols
BCA03323not stated⚠ no description published
BCA03334FallResistors, inductors, capacitors, transformers, vectors
BCA03345SpringAC theory, NEC interpretation, transformer operation, CPR review
BCA03356(classroom course not in this repository's queue)
BCA03367FallGrounding and bonding, NEC application, test instruments
BCA03378SpringTransformers, fire alarm, telephone and security, structured cabling
BCA03389SummerLightning protection, motors and controls, building automation, photovoltaics, power quality
BCA033910SummerAdvanced electricity, raceways, wiring, electrical equipment

⚠ Daytona State's catalog titles BCA0332 "Electrical Academy Union Apprentice 2", duplicating BCA0331's title. Two independent pieces of evidence indicate it is level 3: the offset above holds for every other course in the series, and the paired laboratory BCA0332L is titled "Apprentice 3 Lab-OJT". Confirm with the programme before relying on either title.

Each classroom course has a paired Lab-OJT course carrying the on-the-job training hours — BCA0330L, BCA0331L and so on. Both are required, and the OJT component is far larger: BCA0330L alone is published at 679.8 clock hours.

⚠⚠ How a registered apprenticeship actually works — and why it is unusual

⚠⚠ The National Electrical Code is the book you will use for your whole career

⚠⚠ Arc flash and shock — this trade's two ways of killing you

⚠⚠ Florida electrical licensing — journeyman is county-level, contracting is state-level

⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour apprenticeship course — it carries no college credit

BCA0337 is 99 clock hours, offered Spring at Daytona State, and is level 8 of the union electrical apprenticeship. ⚠ Clock hours carry no college credit.

The paired on-the-job training course is BCA0337L, and both are required — classroom instruction and OJT hours are separate obligations and neither substitutes for the other.
