Course Description

ATT2130 is the ground-instruction course for the FAA Certified Flight Instructor certificate, offered at the lower division. It is where a pilot learns to teach — and it is the only course in a professional pilot curriculum whose subject is not aviation at all, but instruction.

Florida's statewide record describes it as covering "human behavior, the learning process, effective communication, the teaching process, assessment, instructional activity planning, instructor responsibilities and professionalism, techniques of flight instruction, and risk management." That is, essentially, the FAA's Fundamentals of Instructing — a body of material the FAA examines in its own knowledge test and draws from mainstream educational psychology.

Students find the shift unexpected. Every previous course asked a pilot to know something or do something. This one asks how a person learns a physical skill, why a competent explanation can fail, what a student's error reveals about their mental model, and how to assess someone honestly without destroying their confidence. The second half returns to aviation from the other side of the desk: a flight instructor must explain aerodynamics, systems, weather, regulations and navigation well enough to teach them, which is a substantially higher bar than knowing them well enough to pass a test. Students routinely discover here that material they believed they had mastered does not survive the demand to explain it to someone who does not already understand it. That discovery is the point of the course rather than a side effect.

This course is carried by one Florida public institution — Polk State College — at three credits. Guidance below is therefore written with more hedging than usual, and the reasons are set out under Offering Notes. ⚠ The upper-level and lower-level choice — read this before you register

Florida's statewide record for the upper-level version of this course says, in terms:

"As a higher-level course, it offers training beyond the scope of the lower-level alternate course. Students must choose whether to take the lower-level or upper-level version of this course."

This course is that lower-level alternate. The comparison is unusually easy to see, because the state's description of the upper-level course is this course's description word for word, with two sentences added:

"This course allows students to practice their skills as potential flight instructors through mentorship and coached practice. Students obtain Federal Aviation Administration Advanced Ground Instructor certification as part of this course."

⚠⚠ Polk State College carries both, at three credits either way — so at Polk the choice costs nothing in credit, and the upper-level version adds a permanent federal credential and upper-division standing. On the evidence available it is difficult to construct an argument for this course at an institution that offers both, and a student choosing it should ask their adviser directly what the reasoning is. There may be a good one — scheduling, sequence position within the degree, or a programme requirement that names this number — but it is worth hearing stated.

Why upper-division standing matters. A bachelor's degree in Florida requires a substantial block of 3000/4000-level coursework, and lower-division credit does not satisfy it. And under 14 CFR 61.160, the reduced-hour Restricted-Privileges Airline Transport Pilot pathway is keyed to semester credit hours of aviation coursework1,000 hours with a bachelor's degree and 60 such hours, 1,250 hours with an associate degree and at least 30, against 1,500 by the standard route. The credit value is identical between these two courses, so this particular choice does not change the count — but the same choice arises in the paired flight courses (ATF2500L against ATF3502L, and the multi-engine and instrument equivalents), where it does. ⚠ The reduction requires an institution holding an FAA letter of authorisation; ask your programme.

⚠ The Advanced Ground Instructor certificate — worth pursuing even from this course

The upper-level alternate bundles the AGI certificate; this course does not mention it. But the material overlaps heavily, and the certificate is worth knowing about, because very few students realise it is available.

The AGI is a permanent FAA certificate authorising ground instruction toward any pilot certificate or rating other than instrument. It is earned by knowledge test rather than practical test — the Fundamentals of Instructing test plus the Advanced Ground Instructor test — and this course covers most of what both require. Crucially, it needs no medical certificate and no aircraft. A flight instructor who loses medical certification loses the ability to instruct in flight; an AGI is unaffected. A student between flying jobs, waiting on a medical, or grounded by weather can still instruct on the ground and be paid for it.

If you take this course rather than the upper-level version, consider sitting the AGI test on your own initiative while the material is fresh. The incremental cost is one knowledge-test fee.

⚠ On "learning styles" — a note on vocabulary the field has moved past

Florida's statewide description of this course opens by saying it "covers the fundamentals of different student learning styles and prepares individuals to recognize these differences." That phrasing is worth a word of explanation, because a student who carries it forward unexamined will be using vocabulary that current educational research has largely abandoned.

The underlying observation is sound and is genuinely what the course teaches: students differ, a single explanation will not reach everyone, and a good instructor varies approach, pacing and representation until something lands. That is real, it is examinable, and it is most of the practical value of the Fundamentals of Instructing material.

What has not held up is the stronger claim sometimes attached to the phrase — that learners can be sorted into fixed types (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) and that matching instruction to a learner's preferred type improves outcomes. That specific proposition, often called the meshing hypothesis, has been tested repeatedly and has not been supported; learners do report preferences, but matching instruction to them has not reliably produced better learning. The FAA's own Aviation Instructor's Handbook has been revised over time and current editions treat the material more carefully than older ones did.

What this means practically. Learn the terminology, because it appears in the knowledge test and in the handbook, and answer test questions as the handbook frames them. But understand the distinction, because as an instructor the useful habit is diagnostic rather than classificatory — not "this is a visual learner" but "this particular explanation did not work for this particular person on this particular day, so try another one." ⚠ And, as always in this family of courses, judge by the current edition of the handbook your programme issues, not by a catalogue description that may be some years old.

Position in the curriculum

This is the ground half of the flight instructor certificate. Its flight counterpart is ATF2500L or ATF2500 at the lower division, or ATF3502L at the upper, and the two are normally taken together or in immediate sequence — the knowledge tests this course prepares for are prerequisites to the flight instructor practical test.

It follows the commercial ground school (ATT1110 or ATT2110) and usually the instrument ground school (ATT1120 or ATT2120). Expect to need a Commercial Pilot Certificate, which the related courses at other institutions require.

Related numbers that are easy to confuse. ATT2131, "Certified Flight Instructor Ground School", is carried at three credits by Florida State College at Jacksonville, Miami Dade College and Northwest Florida State College and covers substantially the same ground at the same division — but it is a different number. ATT3134 is the upper-level alternate to this course. Register by number, and if a degree requirement names one of these specifically, confirm with an adviser that the one you took satisfies it.

A course that ends in federal examinations

Passing the course and passing the knowledge tests are separate events, and a student can do the first without the second. The course supplies instruction and the endorsement; the tests are taken at an FAA-approved testing centre, for a fee, on your own arrangement. Budget for the fees and check the validity window — a knowledge-test result expires and must be retaken if the practical test is not completed in time, which is a real and avoidable expense for students whose flying is delayed. Ask whether passing results are required for course credit.

Transfer and articulation

This is lower-division credit and transfers transparently between Florida public institutions; it cannot fill a 3000-level requirement. Whether a receiving programme accepts it for a particular requirement is that programme's curriculum decision — worth a written evaluation before transferring, and worth keeping your syllabus for, since this is a single-institution number that a receiving adviser may not recognise.

The course satisfies no general-education requirement and carries no Gordon Rule designation; it is programme coursework. Your FAA certificates are federal credentials and are unaffected by any of this.

⚠ Who writes this syllabus

The material is the FAA's Aviation Instructor's Handbook, the knowledge tests are federal, and where the course sits inside an approved Part 141 programme the training course outline is FAA-approved. The institution supplies the instruction and the credit; it does not set the content. Judge the course by the training course outline and the current handbook edition your programme issues — advice with particular force here, given that this guide could not be written from Polk State's own description. Where a chief flight instructor's guidance differs from anything in this guide, the chief flight instructor is correct.

AI Integration

This course has a stronger claim on the subject than most, because its subject matter is how people learn — and a tool that produces fluent explanations on demand interacts with that directly.

The obvious caution first. Regulatory content is where a language model is least reliable and most confident, and this course contains a good deal of it: instructor privileges and limitations, endorsement wording, recordkeeping and currency. You will sign endorsements, which are legal statements in wording AC 61-65 specifies. Explaining a concept to a specific person, watching their face, noticing which part did not land and reformulating on the spot is the craft of instruction. A generated explanation is pitched at a generic student and cannot observe anyone. An instructor who has outsourced the formulation of explanations has not practised the skill the practical test examines and a real student requires.

There is a second, sharper coincidence. This course teaches that effective assessment is specific, honest, and aimed at the cause of an error rather than its symptom. Ask a model to critique a student's performance from a written description and it will produce assessment-shaped language — balanced, encouraging, plausible — without having observed anything. It generates the form of a critique with none of the content, which is precisely the failure the Aviation Instructor's Handbook warns against when it distinguishes genuine critique from praise. Recognising that output as hollow is a fair test of whether this course's material has landed.

One further point, specific to the vocabulary note above. Training data is dominated by older text, so a model asked about instructional method in aviation will tend to reproduce the confident 1990s-era account of learning styles — fixed types, matched instruction — rather than the more careful current treatment. That is a concrete, checkable instance of the general problem, and a useful one to test the tool on while you still remember that the answer it gives you is dated.

Used well: drill for the knowledge tests, alternative phrasings to widen your explanatory repertoire, and first-draft lesson-plan scaffolding you then rewrite for an actual named student. Used badly, it produces an instructor who sounds fluent and cannot teach.
