ATT1120 Instrument Pilot Ground School is the classroom half of instrument flight training — the knowledge a pilot needs to fly an aircraft solely by reference to instruments, and the preparation for the FAA Instrument Rating Airplane knowledge test.

The course is offered at approximately four Florida institutions, including Florida State College at Jacksonville, Northwest Florida State College and Pasco-Hernando State College.

This course delivers the knowledge and prepares you for the FAA written test. It does not make you instrument rated. To hold the rating you must additionally:

Flight training is billed by the hour — aircraft rental plus instructor — and the total cost of an instrument rating typically runs to several times the tuition of the ground school. Costs vary by aircraft, location and how consistently you fly. Ask the programme for its current published estimate rather than relying on any general figure, including this guide's.

Flight training costs are frequently not covered by standard financial aid, and aid treatment differs between institutions and between degree and non-degree enrolment. Ask financial aid specifically about flight fees before you commit; this is the single most common financial surprise in collegiate aviation. Veterans' benefits have their own rules for flight training. Scholarships exist — AOPA, EAA, Women in Aviation International, the Ninety-Nines, and the National Gay Pilots Association among others — and are consistently under-applied for.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Instrument flying is a perishable skill built on scan discipline. Students who fly twice a week progress on far fewer total hours than those who fly sporadically, which makes the sporadic route more expensive as well as slower.

An instrument rating requires at least a third-class medical certificate; professional flying requires second class (commercial) or first class (ATP and airline operations).

Automation is already the operating environment. Academic integrity. Read the syllabus. ⚠ The stakes here extend past academic consequences. The FAA requires an instructor endorsement stating that you are prepared for the knowledge test, and pilot certification rests on a chain of attestations about competence. Falsifying training records or logbook entries is a federal offence and grounds for certificate action, and the professional culture around it is unforgiving for good reason: the person the shortcut endangers is you and your passengers.
