Course Description

ATF3502L is the flight-training half of the Federal Aviation Administration Certified Flight Instructor certificate for single-engine airplanes — the CFI. It is the course in which a commercial pilot stops being a person who can fly an aeroplane well and becomes a person who can teach someone else to fly one, from the right seat, while talking.

That transition is larger than it sounds, and it is the reason this course exists as a separate certificate rather than as an add-on rating. A commercial pilot demonstrates manoeuvres. A flight instructor must fly the same manoeuvres from the right seat, narrate what they are doing while they do it, deliberately fly them incorrectly so a student can see the error, recognise a student's developing mistake early enough to let it teach without letting it become dangerous, and take control at the last safe moment. The FAA examines all of this on a practical test that has a reputation, well earned, as the most demanding in general aviation.

The course is governed from outside the state system. Its content is set by 14 CFR Part 141, Appendix F (the Flight Instructor Certification Course) and examined against the FAA's Flight Instructor Airman Certification Standards. Neither SCNS nor the institution writes this syllabus — a point developed under Special Information, because it changes which documents actually govern your term.

Two Florida public institutions carry this number: Polk State College and the University of West Florida. They do not award the same credit for it, and the difference is not cosmetic — see The upper-level and lower-level choice below, which is the single most consequential thing on this page.

The identifier carries a (U) marker in the statewide course record, and an L suffix. The L is doing something unusual here: this is not a one-credit laboratory attached to a lecture. It is an entire course whose instructional hours are hours in an aircraft, which is why its contact-hour figure is derived from a federal training requirement rather than from Florida's credit-to-hour convention.

The statewide title is Advanced Flight Instructor – Airplane (U). UWF's title uses the FAA's own name for the certificate; Polk State's follows the statewide wording. Both are the same certificate. UWF places the course in its College of Business, Department of Commerce — worth knowing, because it signals a programme built around airline and aviation-management careers rather than an engineering or technology one.

Neither institution publishes a contact-hour figure. The 31 contact hours recorded for this guide is derived: 25 hours of flight training, which UWF states explicitly as a minimum and which is the figure documented for the identical FAA course at Northwest Florida State College and Florida State College at Jacksonville, plus approximately 6 hours of ground and briefing time, which those two institutions document for the same requirement and which UWF requires but does not quantify. Treat it as a floor, not an estimate — see below.

⚠ The upper-level and lower-level choice — read this before you register

Florida's statewide course record says something about this course that it says about very few others. Its description states, in terms:

"As a higher-level course, it offers training beyond the scope of the lower-level alternate course. Students must choose whether to take the lower-level or upper-level version of this course."

There are genuinely two versions of the CFI-airplane course in the Florida system, and they are different course numbers:

Polk State College carries both halves, so at Polk this is a live choice between two numbers on the same schedule — and Polk awards one credit either way. Read that carefully: at Polk, the upper-level version costs the same credit as the lower-level one, so the only thing the choice changes there is the division of the credit and the added coursework. At UWF only the upper-level version exists, at three credits.

Why the choice matters, in two separate ways.

First, upper-division credit. A bachelor's degree in Florida requires a substantial block of coursework at the 3000/4000 level, and lower-division credit does not satisfy it. The lower-to-upper division boundary is the one real transfer boundary in the Florida system: 1000- and 2000-level courses move between Florida public institutions transparently, but a 2000-level course will not fill a 3000-level requirement. If you are heading for a bachelor's degree, the upper-level version puts these hours where the degree needs them and the lower-level version does not.

Second — and this is the part no catalogue mentions — the credit total feeds a federal rule that can be worth hundreds of flight hours. Under 14 CFR 61.160, a pilot who graduates from an FAA-authorised institution of higher education may qualify for a Restricted-Privileges Airline Transport Pilot certificate with fewer than the standard 1,500 hours:

The threshold is counted in aviation semester credit hours. Taking a one-credit version of this course instead of a three-credit version moves you two credits further from those thresholds, and the same choice repeats across the multi-engine and instrument instructor courses. Miss the 60-hour mark and the difference between the 1,000-hour and 1,250-hour pathway is 250 flight hours; miss 30 and the difference from the unrestricted route is 500. At the rate a working instructor accumulates time, that is measured in months to a year of career progression.

Two cautions, because this is worth getting right rather than assuming. The reduction is available only to graduates of an institution holding a letter of authorisation from the FAA for that purpose, and it is the institution that certifies a graduate's eligibility. Ask your programme directly whether it holds that authorisation and how it counts this course toward the credit total. Do not infer it from the course number.

Credit hours, flight hours, and what you are actually paying for

The contact hours of this course are hours in an aircraft, and they are sold by the hour. That makes it unlike almost every other course in a Florida catalogue, and it has a consequence that institutions state plainly when they state it at all. Northwest Florida State College's wording for the equivalent course is the clearest in the state:

"the hours above are based on FAA-syllabus minimums, and students will often exceed these minimum hours. The cost for these additional flight hours is not covered by the course fee."

So the 25 hours is a floor set by a federal training requirement, not a forecast of what the certificate will take. Students who need more than the syllabus minimum — which is common, and is not a sign of failure — pay for the additional instruction and aircraft time themselves. Budget for the realistic figure rather than the published one, and ask the programme what its recent students have actually averaged.

Two scheduling facts follow from the same reality. Flight training degrades badly when it is spread thin, and programmes say so: one Florida institution's flight courses expect students to fly at least three times a week. And the course is complete when the certificate is earned, not when the term ends, so weather, aircraft availability, instructor availability and examiner scheduling all sit between a student and a grade. Ask what happens if the practical test has not been passed by the end of term.

Eligibility and enrolment

You must already hold an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate to enrol — UWF states this explicitly. You will also need a current FAA medical certificate, and the flight instructor spin training endorsement is required for the airplane instructor rating. Non-U.S. citizens must be cleared through the TSA's Alien Flight Student Program before flight training begins; that clearance takes time and should be started well before the term does.

Most programmes expect the ground school half taken alongside or before the flight halfATT3134 at the upper level, ATT2130 or ATT2131 at the lower — because the FAA knowledge tests for Fundamentals of Instructing and Flight Instructor–Airplane are prerequisites to the practical test. Confirm the pairing your institution uses; the numbers are not consistent across Florida.

Articulation and transfer

This is a 3000-level course, so it is upper-division credit and is not earned by taking a 2000-level equivalent. The credit itself transfers between Florida public institutions; whether a receiving programme accepts it for a specific requirement is a curriculum decision made by that programme, not a transfer question.

The certificate is not the credit, and it travels differently. Your FAA flight instructor certificate is a federal credential and is valid regardless of where you earned it or whether the credit transfers at all. If you change institutions mid-programme, the certificate stays with you; the credit may or may not fill the same box in a new degree plan. Ask a receiving programme for a written evaluation before you move, and ask specifically about the aviation-credit-hour count if you are pursuing the restricted-ATP pathway.

Course-code variations across Florida

The FAA flight instructor course appears under several Florida numbers. Register by number, not by title:

Note that the titles are not a reliable guide: UWF's "Certified Flight Instructor: Flight" and Polk State's "Advanced Flight Instructor – Airplane" are the same course number, and Northwest Florida State's "Certified Flight Instructor I" is a different number at a different division.

⚠ Who actually writes this syllabus

Almost every course in this repository is written by its institution and recorded by the state. This one is not. The training course outline is approved by the FAA under Part 141, the standards are the FAA's Airman Certification Standards, and the examination is a federal practical test conducted by an FAA inspector or designated pilot examiner. The institution supplies the aircraft, the instructors and the credit; it does not set the content.

Two things follow. Judge the course by the training course outline and the ACS your programme issues you in week one, not by the catalogue description and not by this guide. And where a chief flight instructor's guidance differs from anything written here, the chief flight instructor is correct — that is how the regulatory structure works.

AI Integration

AI tools have entered flight training quickly, mostly through study software: adaptive question banks for the knowledge tests, chat assistants that answer regulatory questions, and scenario generators for lesson planning. Used for drill and for rephrasing an explanation you have not yet understood, they work well, and a future instructor has a specific reason to explore them — your students will arrive using them, and will bring you their answers.

The failure mode matters more here than in most subjects. Regulatory questions are exactly where a general-purpose model is least reliable and most confident. Aviation regulation is dense, heavily cross-referenced, revised continuously, and full of near-identical provisions that differ by operation type — Part 61 against Part 91 against Part 141, currency against recency, instructor privileges against pilot privileges. A model will produce a fluent, plausible, specifically-worded answer with a regulation number attached, and the regulation number will sometimes be wrong. Training data also skews old, so superseded guidance and retired Practical Test Standards language surface as though current.

For an instructor, this is not merely an accuracy problem. You will sign endorsements. An endorsement is a legal statement, in wording the FAA specifies in AC 61-65, that a named person is prepared for a specific privilege or test. If you copy an endorsement from a model and it is subtly wrong, the consequence is yours and your student's, and it will surface at a practical test or in an enforcement action. The same applies to currency calculations and to solo authorisations.

The working rule this course should leave you with: verify every regulatory claim against the current FAR/AIM, the current ACS, or current FAA guidance before you act on it or teach it — and be visibly willing to say "I'll look that up" in front of a student. Modelling that habit is itself instruction. The Aviation Instructor's Handbook's treatment of instructor professionalism and of the limits of one's own knowledge reads, in the current environment, as unusually direct advice.

There is one further connection worth drawing, because this course is about teaching judgement. Aviation spent decades learning that the hardest human task is monitoring an automated system that is usually right, and that failures cluster at the handover between automation and human. That is the same problem AI now poses in every field. A flight instructor teaching automation management to a student in a glass cockpit is teaching, in miniature, the discipline the rest of the world is currently trying to acquire.
