Course Description
ATF1100L is Private Pilot Flight — the flight-training course that takes a student to the FAA Private Pilot Certificate. It is not a classroom course. The work is done in an aircraft with a certificated flight instructor, and the course is finished when the FAA examiner signs the certificate.
The Statewide Course Numbering System defines it as "designed to provide the appropriate knowledge and skill requirements in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration private pilot certificate," and its statewide prerequisite is unusually concrete: an FAA Class III medical certificate and a student pilot certificate. Both must be in hand — see the warning below, because this is the single most common reason a student cannot start on time.
⚠⚠ Read the statewide title carefully, because it contains a number: "PRIVATE PILOT FLIGHT (2 – 3 HOURS) (L)". The state has written the credit range into the title itself. ⚠⚠ And two of the three Florida public institutions that carry the number sit OUTSIDE that range: Northwest Florida State College and Polk State College both list it at 1 credit, while the University of West Florida lists it at 3. That is not a data error, and the explanation is in the numbering — see *Offering Notes* below.
⚠ ATF is a FLIGHT prefix, and the distinction matters. Florida numbers aviation in three families: `ATF` for flight training (time in the aircraft), `ATT` for the ground school and aeronautical knowledge that goes with it, and `ASC` for air science. ⚠ `ATF1100L` does not teach you the knowledge for the written exam — its companion ground course does, and at most institutions you take them together. Registering for the flight course alone is a common and expensive mistake.

- Commercial ground-school packages — Jeppesen Sanderson, Gleim, King Schools, Sporty's, ASA — are what most Part 141 programmes standardise on. One of the SCNS entries in this family names the Jeppesen syllabus explicitly.
- The aircraft's Pilot's Operating Handbook for the specific tail number you fly. ⚠ Not a generic type manual — performance numbers and equipment differ between airframes of the same model.
- Electronic flight bag apps — ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot are the industry standard; both are paid, and some programmes include a subscription. ⚠ Learn the paper chart and E6-B methods anyway: the checkride can require them, and the examiner may turn the tablet off.
- Logbook — paper or electronic. ⚠⚠ Your logbook is the legal record of your experience and endorsements. Keep it meticulously and keep a backup; a lost logbook is a genuine problem years later when an employer wants your times.
- Florida-specific: the weather is the curriculum. Summer convective activity, afternoon thunderstorms, sea-breeze fronts, coastal fog, and the hurricane season all shape the training calendar. Build schedule slack in June through September; students regularly lose weeks of flying and then have to re-fly currency requirements.

- ⚠ The private certificate is not itself a job qualification. It permits you to carry passengers, not to be paid for it. It is the mandatory first rung of every professional pilot ladder, and this course is where the ladder starts.
- Commercial Pilot (SOC 53-2012) and Airline Pilot / Copilot / Flight Engineer (SOC 53-2011) — the destination, reached through instrument, commercial and multi-engine ratings.

- ⚠ The hiring cycle is genuinely cyclical. Pilot demand swings with retirements, fuel prices and travel demand, and the training investment takes years to complete. Plan for a career, not for a specific hiring wave.
Special Information
⚠⚠⚠ Before you register: the medical certificate is the gate, and it takes time
The statewide prerequisite is an FAA Class III medical certificate and a student pilot certificate. Both have lead times, and neither is instant.
- Medical: you must be examined by an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), having first completed MedXPress online. ⚠⚠ Any of a long list of conditions — certain medications, ADHD history, diabetes, sleep apnoea, mental-health history, vision limits, past substance or DUI history — can require additional documentation and turn a same-day certificate into a months-long special-issuance process. Start it the term before you enrol.
- Student pilot certificate: applied for through IACRA with a flight instructor; it is not automatic and requires identity verification.
- ⚠ If you are not a US citizen, the TSA's Alien Flight Student Program approval is required before flight training begins, with fingerprinting — another multi-week step.
⚠⚠ Do not wait for the first day of class to discover a medical problem. The honest sequence is: talk to an AME before you commit money to flight training, because a disqualifying finding discovered after enrolment is an expensive way to learn it.
⚠⚠⚠ The cost is not in your tuition, and it is large
Flight training is billed by the hour for aircraft and instructor, and that cost is separate from the course tuition. A private certificate in Florida commonly runs somewhere in the low-to-mid five figures, and the figure depends on the aircraft, the rate, and — most of all — how many hours you take.
- ⚠ The FAA minimums are minimums, not averages. Part 141 sets 35 hours of flight training and Part 61 sets 40; the national average to a private certificate is meaningfully higher, and every extra hour is billed.
- ⚠⚠ Flying consistently is cheaper than flying occasionally. Skills decay between lessons and re-teaching is charged at the same rate. Two or three flights a week finishes for less money than one flight a week, which is counterintuitive and is the single most useful piece of financial advice in this subject.
- Financial aid treatment varies and must be checked individually. Flight fees at an institutional programme are sometimes aid-eligible and sometimes not. ⚠ One course in this same family carries the explicit note "not approved for veterans seeking to use veterans educational benefits" — so veterans using GI Bill benefits must confirm approval for the specific course number, not for the programme in general.
- Ask, in writing, what the hourly aircraft and instructor rates are, whether they are wet or dry, what the checkride and examiner fees are, and what happens to your money if you withdraw.

⚠⚠ A three-fold credit difference on one number, and the statewide title says neither figure. The state wrote "(2 – 3 HOURS)" into the title; UWF's 3 credits sits at the top of that range and both state colleges sit below the bottom of it.
The probable explanation is in the surrounding numbers, and it is worth understanding because it changes what you are buying. Florida also numbers:

⚠⚠ So `ATF1100` is doing two jobs in the state's own records: the WHOLE private-pilot flight course at one institution, and the SECOND PHASE of a two-course split at another. A 1-credit listing is consistent with the phase reading — it matches `ATF1108`/`ATF1109`'s 1 credit each — and a 3-credit listing is consistent with the whole-certificate reading.
⚠ This is an inference from the credit values and the sequence descriptions, not a statement from those two colleges' catalogs. What to do about it is concrete: before enrolling, ask the programme how many flight hours this specific course includes and whether it takes you to the checkride or to a phase. The number of credits will not tell you, and neither will the title.
⚠ The transfer consequence is the sharp one. Statewide transferability is *"guaranteed transfer to institution offering same course"* — but 1 credit of `ATF1100L` transferring into a programme that treats the number as 3 credits leaves a student two credits and a training phase short, and flight training is not made up by taking a classroom course. ⚠⚠ Far more important than the credits: your LOGBOOK and your certificate are what actually transfer. The FAA certificate is national and permanent; the course credit is the smaller half of what you take with you.
⚠ Contact hours here mean FLIGHT hours, and the convention does not apply
The 40 contact hours at the top of this guide are derived, and derived differently from every other course in this catalog. No institution publishes an hour figure, and the ordinary Florida credit-to-hour convention is meaningless for flight training — a flight course's hours are hours in an aircraft, sold by the hour, not classroom periods.
The figure used is the FAA regulatory floor for the certificate: 35 hours of flight training under Part 141 and 40 hours under Part 61. ⚠ Expect the real number to be higher — the national average to a private certificate exceeds the minimum, and it is time and money either way. Add the ground instruction, which is a separate number in the `ATF`/`ATT` families, and the total time commitment is substantially larger than 40 hours.

⚠⚠ The R-ATP point is the one with real money in it. A graduate of an FAA-authorised aviation degree programme can qualify for an airline transport pilot certificate at 1,000 or 1,250 hours instead of 1,500. That authorisation attaches to the institution and the degree, not to this course — so if an airline career is the goal, ask whether the programme holds it before choosing where to train.
Position in the curriculum, and safety
A 1000-level course with no academic prerequisite, taken at the start of an aviation programme, normally alongside its ground-school companion. ⚠ It is frequently taken by students outside any aviation degree — the certificate is useful on its own — and in that case the credit matters less than the training.
⚠⚠ The honest safety statement: general aviation carries real risk, and the accident record is dominated by loss of control in flight and by continued flight into deteriorating weather — both of them decisions, not mechanical failures. That is why aeronautical decision making is a graded outcome and not a lecture topic. The most valuable habit this course can build is the willingness to cancel a flight, and it is the habit most easily eroded by a schedule, a paid aircraft reservation, and a passenger who is already at the airport.
AI Integration
⚠⚠ Aviation is a field with a regulatory answer for everything, and that makes generated text unusually dangerous here — not because it is often wrong, but because being occasionally wrong is not survivable.
Genuinely useful: explaining an aerodynamic or systems concept a second way; drilling oral-exam questions before a checkride; decoding METAR and TAF practice strings; summarising a long handbook chapter; explaining a regulation's structure so you can find it; and building study schedules.
⚠⚠ Where it fails, and the first two can end a flight badly:
- ⚠⚠⚠ Never use a generated answer for a regulation, a performance number, a weight-and-balance calculation, a minimum, or a weather decision. Models paraphrase 14 CFR confidently and get currency requirements, fuel reserves, airspace minimums and equipment rules subtly wrong. The regulation, the POH for your tail number, and the current chart are the only acceptable sources, and they are all free.
- ⚠⚠ It has no access to current conditions. Weather, NOTAMs, TFRs and chart revisions change hourly. A model cannot brief a flight, and a plausible-sounding weather summary is the exact shape of the accident that kills private pilots.
- ⚠ It cannot fly, and it cannot assess whether you can. Stick-and-rudder skill is built in the aircraft with an instructor watching. There is no reading path to a landing.
- It invents sources — advisory circular numbers, handbook page references, AIM paragraph citations.
- ⚠ It will not tell you not to go. Models are agreeable, and asked whether a marginal flight is reasonable they tend to help you plan it. Aeronautical decision making requires the opposite disposition, and the one habit the course most needs to build is precisely the one the tool will not reinforce.
⚠ The framing that matters: as pilot in command you are directly responsible for the operation of the aircraft and the final authority as to its operation — that is the regulation, not a metaphor. No tool shares that responsibility. Use these tools to understand faster; verify every operational number against the primary document before it touches a flight.
Academic integrity: read your syllabus. ⚠ The FAA knowledge test and the checkride are proctored and individual, so there is no route around them — which makes this one of the few courses where the assessment itself settles the question.
