Course Description
Advanced Overview of Collision and Refinishing and Lab takes students through the art of plastic repair, replacement of vehicle components, to the new technology of adhesive bonding for panel replacement. Students must pass the course with a C or better to be graduated from the programme.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ARR is the Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing prefix, and the 0000-level number marks this as a PSAV clock-hour course. Daytona State publishes it at 120 clock hours with a $401.81 lab fee, offered summer and fall, corequisite ARR0123C. It carries zero college credit.
The two subjects this course names are the ones that most distinguish modern collision repair from the trade as it existed a generation ago. Plastics now constitute a large share of a vehicle's exterior, and repairing them well is a genuine craft with its own materials and failure modes. Adhesive bonding has replaced welding for many panel replacements — because bonded joints distribute load better, do not create heat-affected zones, and can join dissimilar materials that cannot be welded to one another at all.

⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — and the C-or-better gate is enforced
- A 0000-level SCNS number denotes postsecondary adult vocational instruction, measured in clock hours rather than college credits. This course carries zero college credit.
- Every ARR course states that a C or better is required to continue in or graduate from the programme — a marginal pass in a trade where the work is inspected and warranted is a real problem, and the programme gates on it.
- Attendance is a completion requirement. In a hands-on trade the hours are the skill — you cannot make up bench time you did not take.
- PSAV credit does not transfer as general education. Some Florida colleges award articulated credit toward a related A.S. — ask specifically and get it in writing.
- Financial aid is calculated differently for clock-hour programmes. Ask the financial aid office.
- The credential and the industry certifications are the point, not the transcript.
⚠ Identify the plastic before you touch it — the repair method depends on it
- Plastic repair fails when the wrong method is used, and the method depends entirely on what the plastic is.
- Thermoplastics can be melted and welded; thermosets cannot — heating a thermoset degrades it, and it must be repaired adhesively.
- Look for the identification symbol first. Most automotive plastic components carry an ISO code moulded on the reverse — checking it takes seconds and it is the reliable method.
- Where no symbol exists, the trade uses float tests, flexibility assessment, and — carefully, and only where permitted — a burn test. Manufacturer identification charts are free and worth carrying.
- Adhesion promoter is required on many plastics, particularly polypropylene and TPO, and omitting it produces a repair that releases cleanly later.
- Clean before sanding and again after. Mould release agents and road contaminants defeat adhesion, and sanding drives contamination into the surface if it was not cleaned first.
- Reinforce from the back. A repair that relies only on filling the visible side has no strength, and it will crack again at the same place.
- Refinishing plastic needs flex consideration — flexible components can require a flex additive, and rigid clear over a flexible substrate cracks.
- Repair is frequently cheaper than replacement, and a technician who repairs plastic well is directly profitable to a shop.
⚠⚠ Adhesive bonding is exacting — the procedure is not advisory
- A bonded structural joint carries crash loads, and it depends entirely on surface preparation and correct application. There is no visual inspection that reveals a badly prepared bond.
- Surface preparation is the whole job. The specified abrasion, cleaning, and primer must be followed exactly — and contamination after preparation, including from bare fingers, compromises the bond.
- Observe open time. Adhesives have a working window; assembling after it has passed produces a joint that looks assembled and is not bonded.
- Bead size, placement, and coverage are specified, and squeeze-out is frequently the indicator that coverage was achieved.
- Clamping and fixturing must hold until cure, and moving a joint during cure destroys it.
- Cure time depends on temperature, and manufacturers specify accelerated cure conditions where they are permitted.
- Rivet bonding combines mechanical and adhesive joining, and it is increasingly specified — particularly for aluminium and mixed-material joints where welding is not possible.
- Dissimilar materials require galvanic isolation. Steel and aluminium in contact with an electrolyte corrode, and in Florida's coastal humidity that electrolyte is always present — which is why the adhesive frequently serves as the isolator as well as the joint.
- Follow the manufacturer procedure for the specific vehicle. Adhesive type, primer, bead, and cure are all specified, and substituting a general-purpose product for a specified one is a procedure violation.
⚠⚠ Follow the OEM repair procedure — this is the industry's governing standard now
- The single biggest change in collision repair over the past two decades is that the manufacturer's published repair procedure governs. It specifies what may be repaired, what must be replaced, where sectioning is permitted, what may be heated, which fasteners are single-use, and what must be recalibrated afterwards.
- Departing from it carries liability for the shop and potentially the technician, and litigation has established that following published procedures is the standard of care.
- Look it up for the specific vehicle, every time. Procedures differ by make, model, model year, and sometimes by build date — experience with a similar vehicle is not a substitute.
- Document that you followed it. Printing or referencing the procedure in the repair file is what supports the estimate and defends the repair.

- ⚠ ADAS recalibration is procedure-driven. Cameras, radar, and sensors require recalibration after many operations, and the triggering conditions are specified by the manufacturer — a vehicle returned with an uncalibrated system is a safety and liability problem, not an unfinished job.
- Rule 11 applies with force — this is the fastest-moving part of the trade. Verify current procedures with the manufacturer.
⚠⚠ Collision repair safety — the hazards that cause permanent harm
- Airbags and pyrotechnic devices are explosive components. Undeployed airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and battery disconnect procedures must be handled to the manufacturer's procedure, and a mishandled inflator can kill.
- Hybrid and electric vehicles carry lethal voltage. High-voltage systems must be de-energized to the manufacturer's specified procedure with the correct insulated tools and personal protective equipment. This is routine work now, not an exotic case.
- Welding hazards — fume, arc eye, fire, and burns. Galvanized panel coatings produce zinc oxide fume, and vehicle panels are frequently coated. See this repository's PMT0077C and PMT0078C guides.
- Dust and particulates from sanding, including silica from body filler, require respiratory protection and extraction at the tool.
- Adhesives and solvents require ventilation and gloves; structural adhesives in particular have specific handling requirements.
- Isocyanates in refinish materials cause permanent occupational asthma; a supplied-air respirator is the standard of care for spraying. See this repository's ARR0121C guide.
- Stored energy in deformed structure, pulling equipment, springs, and lifts releases suddenly.
- Compressed air, heavy panels, and lifts are the everyday mechanical hazards.
- Hearing protection. Air tools and hammering accumulate a real dose across a career.
- Read the safety data sheet for every product you mix, spray, or bond with.
⚠ The programme runs three parallel tracks as corequisite triples
- Refinishing: ARR0121C → ARR0122C → ARR0123C
- Collision repair: ARR0241C → ARR0242C → ARR0243C, plus ARR0244C
- Unibody and frame: ARR0381C → ARR0382C
- Term one (fall or spring): ARR0121C + ARR0241C + ARR0381C.
- Term two (spring or summer): ARR0122C + ARR0242C + ARR0382C.
- Term three (summer or fall): ARR0123C + ARR0243C + ARR0244C.
- ARR0021 Automotive Collision Estimating (75 hours, summer) completes the programme.
- ⚠ The cross-track prerequisites enforce the cohort. ARR0122C requires ARR0381C and ARR0123C requires ARR0382C — the refinishing sequence is gated by the unibody sequence, so you cannot progress in one track while falling behind in another.
- Nine courses at 120 clock hours plus the 75-hour estimating course is 1,155 clock hours — close to a full-time year, and it should be planned as one.
⚠ I-CAR and ASE are what the industry hires and insures on
- Florida does not license collision repair technicians, so industry certification is the credential that matters — and it matters more here than in most trades, because insurers and manufacturers audit it.
- I-CAR (i-car.com) — the ProLevel pathway leads to Platinum individual recognition and Gold Class shop status, and Gold Class is frequently required for insurer direct repair programme participation.
- ASE (ase.com) — the B-series collision certifications: B2 refinishing, B3 non-structural repair, B4 structural repair, B5 mechanical and electrical, B6 damage analysis and estimating. ASE requires documented work experience in addition to passing, so a course prepares you and does not certify you.
- OEM certification programmes are the growth area. Manufacturers certify shops and technicians for their vehicles — particularly aluminium-bodied and electric models — and certified shops receive referral work that uncertified shops cannot touch.
- Ask your programme which certifications it prepares you for and whether test vouchers are provided.
- Rule 11 applies — certification structures and insurer requirements change; verify with I-CAR and ASE.
⚠ An honest account of the industry — and why Florida is a strong market
- Florida is one of the best collision repair markets in the country. High vehicle density, heavy tourist and rental traffic, year-round driving, an older driving population, and storm and hail damage all generate steady volume, with hurricane-season surges.
- Pay is commonly flat-rate — by the booked hours on a job rather than by the clock. A fast, skilled technician earns well; a slow one does not, and understanding that before accepting a job matters.
- Insurance drives the economics through direct repair programmes that set rates, procedures, and cycle-time expectations. That pressure is the constant background tension of the trade.
- The trade is technically escalating, not declining. Advanced materials, bonded structures, sensors, and electric drivetrains have made the work harder and raised the value of trained technicians.
- There is a genuine technician shortage — the workforce is ageing and replacement has been slow.
- It is physical work — kneeling, overhead work, awkward positions, and heavy panels. Knees, shoulders, backs, and hearing take the load.
- Tools are a real personal cost. Most technicians own their hand tools; ask what the programme provides.
- Progression exists — technician → lead → estimator → manager → owner, and estimating and management are where the better-paid, less physical careers are.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.

Plastic repair and adhesive bonding are where the trade is going. Mixed-material construction has made welding one option among several, and technicians who are genuinely good at bonded and plastic work are increasingly the ones manufacturers certify.
