Course Description
Introduction to Refinishing and Lab introduces students to the theory and operation of modern high-tech refinish equipment, and to the proper application of today's refinish materials while following personal and refinish safety protocols. To continue in the programme, students must pass the course with a C or better.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ARR is the Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing prefix, and the 0000-level number marks this as a postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) clock-hour course. Daytona State publishes it at 120 clock hours with a $381.77 lab fee, offered fall and spring. It carries zero college credit.
The catalog puts safety protocols in the first sentence, and that placement is correct. Automotive refinishing is one of the few trades where a single category of chemical exposure — isocyanates — can permanently end a career, and the habits formed in this first course are the ones a painter carries for thirty years. Everything else in refinishing can be learned later; respiratory discipline cannot be retrofitted onto a sensitized painter.

⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — and the C-or-better gate is enforced
- A 0000-level SCNS number denotes postsecondary adult vocational instruction, measured in clock hours rather than college credits. This course carries zero college credit, and the hour figure is the real measurement.
- Every ARR course states that a C or better is required to continue in, or graduate from, the programme. That is unusual to publish so explicitly, and it is not decorative — a marginal pass in a trade where the work is inspected and warranted is a real problem, and the programme gates on it.
- Attendance is a completion requirement. Hours missed are hours owed, and in a hands-on trade the hours are the skill — you cannot make up bench time you did not take.
- PSAV credit does not transfer as general education and does not carry the A.A.'s junior-status guarantee. Some Florida colleges award articulated credit toward a related A.S. — ask specifically and get the answer in writing.
- Financial aid is calculated differently for clock-hour programmes. Ask the financial aid office rather than assuming.

⚠⚠ Collision repair safety — the hazards that cause permanent harm
- Isocyanates are the defining hazard of this trade. Two-component polyurethane clearcoats and primers contain isocyanates, and they are a leading cause of occupational asthma. Sensitization is permanent and it is dose-independent once established — a sensitized painter can react to trace exposures for the rest of their life and is generally unable to continue in refinishing.
- A cartridge respirator is not adequate for isocyanate spraying. The standard of care is a supplied-air respirator in a properly functioning spray booth, and this is the single most important habit to build from your first spray day.
- Skin contact matters too. Isocyanates sensitize through skin as well as by inhalation, so gloves and coveralls are part of the control, not an optional extra.
- Solvent exposure from reducers, thinners, and cleaners causes central nervous system effects, dermatitis, and long-term harm; ventilation and gloves are the controls.
- Dust and particulates from sanding — including silica from body filler and primer — require respiratory protection and dust extraction at the tool.
- Welding hazards apply here as in any fabrication: fume, arc eye, fire, and burns. Galvanized coatings produce zinc oxide fume, and vehicle panels are frequently coated. See this repository's PMT0077C and PMT0078C guides.
- Airbags and pyrotechnic devices are explosive components. Undeployed airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and battery disconnect procedures must be handled to the manufacturer's procedure, and a mishandled inflator can kill.
- Hybrid and electric vehicles carry lethal voltage. High-voltage systems must be de-energized following the manufacturer's specified procedure, with the correct insulated tools and personal protective equipment. This is now routine work rather than an exotic case.
- Compressed air, lifts, spring-loaded components, and heavy panels are the everyday mechanical hazards.
- Hearing protection. Air tools, sanders, and hammering accumulate to a real noise dose over a career.
- Read the safety data sheet for every product you spray or mix. It states the isocyanate content and the required protection, and it is the operative document.
⚠ The technical data sheet is the instruction manual — follow it exactly
- Every refinish product has a technical data sheet stating mixing ratio, reduction, spray pressure, gun setup, number of coats, film build, flash time, and cure schedule. It is the operative document and it is free from the manufacturer.
- Mixing ratios are not approximate. Two-component materials cure by chemical reaction, and an incorrect ratio produces a finish that never fully cures, or cures brittle, or fails prematurely — and the failure appears weeks later, on the customer's car.
- Flash times matter. Recoating before solvent has flashed traps it and produces solvent pop and dieback; waiting too long past the recoat window can cause adhesion failure.
- Reduction depends on temperature. Manufacturers publish different reducers for different temperature ranges, and Florida's heat and humidity mean the slow reducer is frequently the correct one — using a temperate-climate default here produces dry spray and poor flow.
- Humidity affects everything. Florida's humidity extends flash times, promotes blushing in solvent systems, and changes waterborne drying substantially — which is a real regional skill rather than a footnote.
- Film build is measurable and specified. Too thin and coverage and durability suffer; too thick and you get runs, solvent entrapment, and cracking.
- Do not mix product lines. Systems are engineered together, and combining a primer from one manufacturer with a clear from another voids the warranty and frequently the adhesion.
- Write it down. Recording the products, ratios, and conditions used on a job is how a defect is diagnosed later.
⚠ Spray technique: the fundamentals that determine every finish you ever produce
- Gun distance, angle, speed, and overlap are the four variables, and every defect traces to one of them. Learn them deliberately rather than by feel.
- Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface and at a constant distance. Arcing the gun produces uneven film build — heavier in the middle, lighter at the edges — and it is the most common beginner fault.
- Fifty percent overlap is the standard starting point, and consistency matters more than the exact figure.
- Trigger control at the start and end of each pass prevents heavy edges.
- Practise on panels before you touch a vehicle. Spray-out cards and scrap panels cost almost nothing, and the hours you put in on scrap are what make the first customer job acceptable.
- Clean the gun properly, every time. A gun with dried material in the passages sprays badly and cannot be diagnosed — and gun cleaning is where a great many finish problems originate.
- Air quality determines finish quality. Moisture or oil in the air line produces fisheyes and craters no technique can overcome, so filtration and separator maintenance are part of spraying.
- Contamination is the enemy. Silicone from waxes and polishes causes fisheyes, and it travels through a shop — which is why wax and grease remover, tack cloths, and booth discipline exist.
- Learn to read a defect. Orange peel, runs, dry spray, solvent pop, dieback, and fisheye each point to a specific cause, and diagnosing your own work is what produces improvement.
⚠ The programme runs three parallel tracks as corequisite triples — plan the whole thing
Daytona State's collision repair programme is structured as three parallel tracks taken together each term, not as a single linear sequence. Understanding the shape before you enrol prevents a great deal of confusion.
- Refinishing: ARR0121C → ARR0122C → ARR0123C
- Collision repair: ARR0241C → ARR0242C → ARR0243C, plus ARR0244C
- Unibody and frame: ARR0381C → ARR0382C
- Term one (fall or spring): ARR0121C + ARR0241C + ARR0381C — all three introductory courses together.
- Term two (spring or summer): ARR0122C + ARR0242C + ARR0382C.
- Term three (summer or fall): ARR0123C + ARR0243C + ARR0244C.
- ARR0021 Automotive Collision Estimating (75 hours, summer) completes the programme.
- ⚠ The cross-track prerequisites are the surprising part. ARR0122C lists ARR0381C as its prerequisite and ARR0123C lists ARR0382C — so the refinishing sequence is gated by the unibody sequence, not by the previous refinishing course. That enforces the cohort structure: you cannot progress in one track while falling behind in another.
- Nine courses at 120 clock hours plus the 75-hour estimating course is 1,155 clock hours. That is close to a full-time year, and it should be planned as one.
⚠ I-CAR and ASE are what the industry hires and insures on
- Florida does not license collision repair technicians, so industry certification is the credential that matters — and it matters more in this trade than in most, because insurers and manufacturers audit it.
- I-CAR (i-car.com) is the industry training organization. Its ProLevel pathway leads to Platinum individual recognition and to Gold Class shop status, and Gold Class is frequently a requirement for insurer direct repair programme participation. A shop that loses it loses work.
- ASE (ase.com) offers the B-series collision repair and refinish certifications — B2 painting and refinishing, B3 non-structural analysis and damage repair, B4 structural analysis and damage repair, B5 mechanical and electrical components, and B6 damage analysis and estimating. ASE Master Collision Repair and Refinish requires the set.
- ASE certification requires documented work experience in addition to passing the tests, so a course prepares you and does not certify you. Log your experience from your first job.
- OEM certification programmes are the growth area. Manufacturers certify shops and technicians to repair their vehicles — particularly aluminium-bodied and electric models — and certified shops get referral work that uncertified shops cannot touch.
- Ask your programme which certifications it prepares you for and whether test vouchers are provided. Institutions frequently supply them and students routinely never find out.
- Rule 11 applies — certification structures and insurer requirements change; verify with I-CAR and ASE directly.
⚠ An honest account of the industry — and why Florida is a strong market
- Florida is one of the best collision repair markets in the country. High vehicle density, heavy tourist and rental traffic, year-round driving, an older driving population, and storm and hail damage all generate steady volume — and hurricane seasons produce surges.
- Pay is commonly flat-rate: technicians are paid by the booked hours on a job rather than by the clock. A fast, skilled technician earns well above the hourly equivalent; a slow one earns badly, and understanding that structure before accepting a job matters.
- Insurance drives the economics. Most work is paid by insurers through direct repair programmes, which set rates, procedures, and cycle-time expectations. That pressure is the constant background tension of the trade, and it is why documentation of OEM procedures has become so important.
- The trade is technically escalating, not declining. Advanced materials, bonded structures, sensors, and electric drivetrains have made the work harder and raised the value of trained technicians — which is precisely why formal training and certification now matter more than they did a generation ago.
- There is a genuine technician shortage. The workforce is ageing and replacement has been slow, so trained entrants are in demand.
- It is physical work — standing, kneeling, overhead work, awkward positions, and heavy panels. Knees, shoulders, backs, and hearing take the load across a career.
- Tools are a real personal cost. Most technicians own their hand tools, and building a set is an ongoing investment. Ask what the programme provides and what you are expected to buy.
- Progression exists. Technician → lead or team leader → estimator → shop manager → owner, and the estimating and management routes are where the trade's better-paid, less physical careers are.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.

Build the respiratory habit now. It is the single decision in this course with a thirty-year consequence, and painters who took it seriously from the first day are the ones still working.
