Sports nutrition is surrounded by a large, profitable and largely unregulated supplement industry. In the United States, dietary supplements are regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, which does NOT require pre-market approval for safety or efficacy — ⚠ a manufacturer does not have to prove a product works, or that it contains what the label says, before selling it. The result is a field in which the volume of confident claims vastly exceeds the volume of evidence, and the professional skill this course builds is the ability to tell them apart.

The science, in order. Energy systems — ⚠ the phosphagen, glycolytic and oxidative systems, and the fact that they operate simultaneously with the mix determined by intensity and duration rather than switching on and off, which is the correction most students need. Substrate use: carbohydrate and fat oxidation across intensities, glycogen as the limiting store in prolonged high-intensity work, and ⚠ "hitting the wall" as a physiological event with a name and a mechanism.

The macronutrients, quantitatively. Carbohydrate — requirements scaled to training load, loading protocols, intake during and after exercise, and the glycogen resynthesis window. Protein — ⚠ requirements genuinely higher than the general population's RDA, the evidence on per-meal doses and distribution, leucine and the anabolic response, and the finding that total daily intake matters more than timing for most purposes. Fat — essential fatty acids, and the evidence on low-carbohydrate and ketogenic approaches for endurance, which ⚠ is genuinely contested and should be presented as such.

Plus contamination and adulteration risk, third-party certification programmes, and the anti-doping consequences.
