Course Description
APK2000C — statewide title Introduction to Kinesiology — is the gateway course of an exercise science or kinesiology degree: a survey of the subdisciplines, and an honest look at where the degree leads.
⚠ Two things to check before registering.
1. Title divergence. The statewide title is "Introduction to Kinesiology"; UWF's is "Introduction to Exercise Science." ⚠ These name the same course, and the difference reflects a real disagreement in the field about what to call itself. "Kinesiology" is the broader term — the study of human movement, including its pedagogical, philosophical and sociocultural dimensions. "Exercise science" is narrower and more biological. A department's choice signals its centre of gravity, and UWF's description covers the biological subdisciplines plus sport psychology and motor behaviour.
2. ⚠ Suffix. The queued identifier carries a C; UWF carries bare APK 2000, 3 sh, with no laboratory. Where a C version exists it will include a laboratory or activity component and carry more contact hours. This guide states the integrated form's hours, matching the statewide identifier, and describes UWF's lecture version alongside it — the subject matter is the same either way.
⚠ Evidence base: the inventory records only two institutions, one of them private, and only UWF's catalog was retrievable. This is a genuinely single-source guide — though introductory survey courses of this kind are highly standardised, because they all survey the same subdisciplines.
UWF places it in the College of Health, Department of Movement Sciences and Health at 3 semester hours, and describes it as "an introduction to the discipline of Exercise Science… an overview of exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, biomechanics, motor behavior, sport nutrition, and other related topics. This course also provides information on career paths that stem from the Exercise Science discipline."
⚠⚠ That last sentence is the most useful thing in the course, and it is why the course exists. Exercise science is among the most-chosen and least-understood undergraduate majors in the United States. Very large numbers of students enter it intending to become physical therapists, and a substantial proportion do not — because they discover the graduate admission requirements late, or discover that the field they wanted was something else. ⚠ A good version of this course front-loads that information deliberately, in the first year, while changing direction is still cheap.
The subdisciplines, which are the course's structure.
- Exercise physiology — how the body responds to acute exercise and adapts to training. ⚠ The largest subdiscipline and the core of most curricula.
- Biomechanics — the mechanics of human movement; forces, motion, loading and injury.
- Motor behaviour — ⚠ which splits into three things students routinely conflate: motor control (how the nervous system produces movement), motor learning (how skills are acquired through practice), and motor development (how movement changes across the lifespan). They are different fields with different literatures.
- Sport and exercise psychology — motivation, adherence, anxiety, performance, and the psychological effects of exercise.
- Sport nutrition.
- Frequently also: epidemiology and public health, sociology of sport, history and philosophy of the field, and measurement and evaluation.
⚠ The intellectual claim that holds them together: physical activity is a determinant of health at a population scale, and understanding it requires the biological, behavioural and social sciences together. The evidence for physical inactivity as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, depression and all-cause mortality is among the most robust in public health — which is what distinguishes this field from personal training and is why "Exercise is Medicine" exists as an initiative.

- ⚠⚠ The most valuable resource in this course is not a book: it is people. Shadow a physical therapist, a cardiac rehabilitation specialist, a strength coach and an athletic trainer. Most students discover which of those jobs they actually want by watching someone do it, and doing that in the first year rather than the third saves years.
Career Pathways
⚠⚠ This section is the course's most important content, and the honest version of it is not always what students want to hear.
Requiring graduate study or an accredited programme:
- Physical therapists (SOC 29-1123) — ⚠⚠ the destination most exercise science students name, and it requires an accredited DPT — a three-year doctoral programme. Admission is competitive: a strong science GPA, prerequisite courses that may not all be in your major, observation hours across settings, and frequently the GRE. Check a target programme's prerequisite list in your FIRST year, because some requirements (chemistry, physics, psychology, statistics) need planning.
- Occupational therapists (SOC 29-1122) — accredited master's or doctorate.
- Physician assistants (SOC 29-1071) — ⚠ accredited master's, competitive, with patient-care hour requirements.
- Athletic trainers (SOC 29-9091) — ⚠⚠ now requires an accredited MASTER'S degree; the bachelor's route has been phased out. Plus BOC certification and Florida licensure.
- Chiropractors (SOC 29-1011); physicians (SOC 29-1210s) — ⚠ note that medical schools require the majors biology and chemistry sequences, which an exercise science curriculum may not include.
- Registered dietitians (SOC 29-1031) — ⚠ requires an accredited dietetics programme and a supervised internship; exercise science coursework does not substitute.
- Clinical exercise physiologists (SOC 29-1128) — ⚠ the ACSM-CEP requires a bachelor's plus documented clinical hours.

- Corporate wellness coordinators (SOC 11-9199).
- Fitness and personal trainers (SOC 39-9031) — ⚠ entered without a degree, which is why the degree only pays off if it takes you somewhere the certification alone does not.
- Health and wellness coaches (SOC 21-1091); community health programme staff (SOC 21-1094).
- Medical device and pharmaceutical sales (SOC 41-4011) — ⚠ a common and well-paid destination that surprises students.
- Research technicians (SOC 19-4021) — university and clinical laboratories.
- Physical education teachers (SOC 25-2031) — ⚠ requires a state-approved teacher preparation programme and the FTCE, which is a different curriculum from exercise science.
⚠⚠ The point the course exists to make: an exercise science bachelor's degree by itself has a narrower direct market than students expect, and its value is largely as preparation for a graduate or accredited programme. Students who plan for that from the first year do well; students who discover it in the final year do not. That is the whole argument for taking this course seriously rather than treating it as an easy first-year requirement.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Use this course to plan — it is the point
- Identify a target career and get its actual requirements now. ⚠ Prerequisite lists for DPT, PA and OT programmes are published, and several require courses an exercise science curriculum does not include by default — general chemistry with laboratory, physics, psychology, statistics. Discovering that in the senior year costs a year or more.
- Start observation hours early. ⚠ DPT and PA programmes require documented hours across settings, and they take time to accumulate. They also tell you whether you want the job.
- ⚠ Get CPR/AED certified — it is required for nearly every certification, placement and laboratory course in the sequence.
- Meet an advisor with a written plan, and revise it.
⚠ Prerequisites and position in the curriculum
- ⚠ UWF lists no prerequisite. A 2000-level introductory course, normally taken in the first year, and open to any student.
- Nothing is assumed, though high school biology helps.
- ⚠⚠ Take it FIRST, not later. Its value is planning value, and it decays. A student who takes it in the junior year has already made most of the decisions it exists to inform.
- What follows: ⚠ a long, strictly sequenced chain — anatomy and physiology I and II with laboratories, then exercise physiology with laboratory, then exercise testing and prescription with laboratory, then the specialised courses. Each is a prerequisite for the next and each runs on a fixed rotation. Missing one costs a year. Map the whole sequence in this course.
Course format and workload
3 credits, 60 contact hours in the integrated C form — lecture plus a laboratory or activity component, which is what the statewide identifier represents. ⚠ UWF's version carries no suffix and is 45 contact hours of lecture. Check which one you are in. May not be repeated for credit.
Expect 4–6 hours per week outside class. ⚠ This is a genuinely moderate-workload survey — deliberately, because its purpose is orientation rather than mastery. Assessment typically includes examinations, short assignments on the subdisciplines, ⚠ a career exploration or professional plan assignment — which is the one worth doing properly — and often an observation report or an interview with a practitioner.
⚠ Scope of practice, introduced early because it matters early
- ⚠⚠ Many students in this course will start working in fitness settings during their degree, and the boundaries apply immediately.
- An exercise professional may: assess fitness within their credential's scope, design exercise programmes for apparently healthy people, and provide general nutrition information.
- ⚠⚠ They may not: diagnose, treat injury or disease, prescribe or adjust medication, or provide individualised medical nutrition therapy — the last of which requires a licence in Florida under Chapter 468.
- Referral is the skill. ⚠ Knowing what you are not qualified to handle, and saying so, is a professional competence rather than an admission of weakness.
⚠ Evaluating claims — the habit this course should install
Fitness and wellness is a field with an enormous volume of confident, profitable and unevidenced claims. ⚠ The habits worth forming in the first year:
- Ask what the evidence is, and who produced it.
- ⚠ Distinguish a mechanism from an outcome. "This activates the pathway that produces X" is not "this produces X".
- Prefer position statements and systematic reviews to single studies, and single studies to assertions.
- ⚠ Notice who is selling something. Supplements in the United States require no pre-market proof of efficacy, and certifications vary from rigorous to worthless.
Articulation and transfer
⚠ The suffix and the title are both live here — APK2000C versus bare APK 2000, and "Introduction to Kinesiology" versus "Introduction to Exercise Science". Search by number and keep the syllabus.
⚠⚠ The more important transfer point for a student in this course is the one it should teach: the A&P sequence that follows is where the real articulation risk lies. Anatomy and physiology is taught in Florida under both the BSC and APK prefixes, and most health-professions prerequisite lists name BSC numbers. Prefix note. APK is applied kinesiology; PET physical education teaching; HLP health and physical education at some institutions; HSC health science; SPM sport management; ATR athletic training. ⚠ An introductory course under PET or HLP may be teacher-preparation oriented rather than exercise-science oriented — they are different degrees. Search by subject and check the department.

Where AI assistance genuinely helps in a first-year survey:
- Explaining a subdiscipline or an unfamiliar term.
- ⚠ Career research — comparing requirements across professions as a starting point, then verified against the accrediting body's own site, because that is where the requirements actually live and they change.
- Orienting to a research article for the first time.
- Drafting and improving a professional plan or résumé.
⚠⚠ Where it fails, and one of these is specific to this course's purpose:
- ⚠⚠ Programme and credential requirements stated confidently and wrongly. These change — athletic training moved to a master's-level requirement, dietetics changed its degree requirement, and ACSM revised its certification structure. A model reproduces whatever its training data held. ⚠ In a course whose entire value is helping you plan accurately, this is the failure that costs the most: check CAPTE, ARC-PA, CAATE, ACEND and ACSM directly.
- Fitness misinformation. ⚠ Training data is saturated with fitness marketing and influencer content, which vastly outweighs the research literature. Asked about a supplement, a training method or a diet, a model reproduces the popular consensus. This is exactly the discrimination the course is trying to teach.
- Fabricated citations and statistics.
- ⚠ Individualised exercise or nutrition prescription. A model will produce a programme on request. It has no screening, no history and no accountability — and for a client with a health condition, prescribing is outside your scope regardless of who composed it.
⚠ AI as subject matter, which belongs in a survey course. Wearables, app-based coaching, computer-vision movement screening and algorithmic training programmes are the environment this discipline's graduates will work in — and the professional question is the same one the course asks about supplements: what is the evidence, and who is selling it? ⚠ The durable value of a qualified professional is judgement about an individual person, which is precisely what these tools do not have.
Academic integrity. Follow the course policy. Submitting generated work as your own violates every Florida institution's policy — ⚠ and for students heading toward competitive health programmes, integrity findings are disclosed on applications and examined. Starting a degree that way, in the course about planning the degree, is a poor beginning.
