Course Description
Geographic Information Systems in Anthropology covers the application of Geographical Information Systems technology in anthropology, archaeology and cultural resource management. It is offered concurrently with ANG5181, with graduate students assigned additional work.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ANT is the Anthropology prefix and the C suffix marks a combined lecture-and-laboratory course. UWF publishes this at 3 semester hours; the contact-hour figure applies the combined convention of 20 per credit and is derived.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Projection and accuracy — the two things that silently invalidate spatial work
- ⚠⚠ Data in the wrong coordinate system will still draw a map. It will simply be in the wrong place, or measure the wrong distance — and nothing warns you. Check the coordinate system of every layer before doing anything with it.
- Projections distort. Every flat map trades off area, distance, shape, or direction, and measuring area or distance in an unsuitable projection produces confidently wrong numbers. Choose a projection appropriate to the region and the measurement, and state it.
- ⚠ Datum matters as well as projection. A datum mismatch can displace features by a hundred metres or more — enough to put a site in the wrong field, or outside a project boundary it is actually inside.
- Record positional accuracy honestly. Consumer satellite positioning is not survey grade, and a point stored to six decimal places is not accurate to six decimal places. Stating more precision than the instrument supports is a misrepresentation.
- Document the source and the accuracy of every layer. Metadata is the difference between a dataset someone can use and one nobody dares trust.
- ⚠ Beware of inherited error. A digitised historic map carries its original inaccuracies plus the georeferencing error, and analysis performed on it inherits both.
- ⚠⚠ Predictive models reproduce the biases of the data that trained them. A model built on known sites predicts where sites like the known ones are — and known sites are where people happened to survey, so the model can systematically miss whole classes of site while looking authoritative.
- Do not let the model replace survey. Predictive modelling is a planning aid; treating a low-probability zone as empty is exactly how sites get destroyed.
- Check results against reality. A least-cost path that crosses a cliff, or a viewshed that ignores vegetation, is telling you about your inputs.
⚠⚠ Spatial data about sites and communities is sensitive
- ⚠⚠ Archaeological site locations are confidential. Precise coordinates are withheld from public reports and public-facing maps because publishing them invites looting — and this is a legal and professional norm rather than excessive caution.
- Generalise or omit location in anything public, and know your agency's or SHPO's rules before publishing a map.
- ⚠ Be careful with imagery and web maps. A screenshot with a basemap can be georeferenced by anyone, and an image posted online can disclose a location as effectively as coordinates.
- Strip location metadata from photographs before sharing them; modern cameras and phones embed coordinates by default.
- Spatial data about living communities carries its own risks. Mapping households, resource use, or sacred places can expose people to consequences they did not agree to.
- Get consent for the use, not just the collection, and be specific about who will see the map.
- ⚠ Tribal and descendant community data may be subject to their own governance, and their authority over it is real.
- Aggregate where you can, and ask whether the map needs the precision you are about to give it.
- Store sensitive spatial data securely and control who has access.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
