Course Description
Scientific and Research Diving involves interdisciplinary instruction in both classroom and the field designed to give students an understanding of how to conduct scientific research safely in the underwater environment. Specific topics are based on the NOAA Diving Manual and include the history of scientific diving, diving physiology, approaches to scientific and research diving, background on different scientific diving methodologies, dive planning for scientific research, scientific diving in different environments, applications for underwater research, survey methods, data retrieval, site selection, underwater navigation, search and recovery techniques, instrument implementation, diving accident management and emergency procedures. It is offered concurrently with ANG5836.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ANT is the Anthropology prefix. UWF publishes this at 3 semester hours.
This course is the qualifying pathway that makes the maritime field methods courses possible, and it is unusual for an anthropology department to teach it — which reflects UWF's maritime programme. Its subject is not diving as recreation but diving as a work platform: how to do research underwater safely, within an organisational safety framework, while task-loaded. The NOAA Diving Manual basis is significant, because it is the reference standard for scientific diving in the United States rather than a recreational training syllabus.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Scientific diving is not recreational diving — and the distinction is legal as well as practical
- ⚠⚠ A recreational certification does not qualify you to dive scientifically. Open-water certification teaches you to dive for pleasure within narrow limits; scientific diving means working underwater while task-loaded — recording, measuring, excavating — which is a substantially higher demand on skill and gas planning.
- ⚠ Scientific diving in the United States operates under an organisational framework, not individual discretion. Programmes follow AAUS (American Academy of Underwater Sciences) standards under a Diving Control Board and a Diving Safety Officer, which is what allows scientific diving to be conducted outside the commercial diving regulations. You dive under the programme's authorisation, to its limits, with its logging and its buddy requirements.
- Medical clearance is required, and it is a real examination rather than a form. ⚠ Some conditions are disqualifying and some are waiverable — asthma, ear and sinus problems, seizure disorders, and cardiac conditions among them. Get screened before you invest in the pathway.
- ⚠⚠ Never hold your breath on ascent. Expanding gas ruptures lung tissue and can drive gas into the arterial circulation — arterial gas embolism can be fatal within minutes and can occur from a depth of only a few metres. It is the fastest-acting diving injury and it is entirely preventable.
- Understand decompression sickness, nitrogen narcosis, and oxygen toxicity, and plan dives with real margins rather than to the limit of a table or computer.
- ⚠ Respect the surface interval and the flying-after-diving rule. Travelling home too soon after a field season has caused real injuries.
- Archaeological diving is frequently harder than the diving people trained on — low or zero visibility, current, entanglement in lines and grids, overhead obstructions, and long bottom times on repetitive dives. Task loading is what turns a manageable dive into an incident.
- Know the emergency plan before you enter the water: the nearest recompression chamber, the evacuation route, and the emergency contact. Divers Alert Network (DAN) is the standard resource, and membership is inexpensive.
- ⚠⚠ Call a dive you are not comfortable with. Anyone may end a dive at any time for any reason, without explanation and without argument — this is a core rule of the discipline and a programme that does not honour it is not one to dive with.
⚠⚠ Diving accident management — know it before you need it
- The course lists accident management and emergency procedures explicitly, and it is the content most worth retaining because it is used under time pressure by people who are frightened.
- ⚠⚠ Suspect decompression sickness or gas embolism in any diver who becomes unwell after a dive, and treat it as an emergency. Symptoms can be vague — fatigue, joint pain, confusion, tingling — and divers routinely explain them away, which is exactly how treatment gets delayed.
- Administer emergency oxygen at the highest practical concentration and keep the diver flat where the protocol directs; oxygen is the single most effective field intervention and it is frequently delayed.
- ⚠ Call for help early. Divers Alert Network operates an emergency line for exactly this, and the decision about recompression is a medical one made with specialist input rather than on the boat.
- Know where the nearest operating recompression chamber is and the evacuation route to it — before the dive, as part of the plan.
- ⚠⚠ Do not recompress in the water. It is dangerous and is not a field option.
- Record the dive profile and the timeline. Depths, times, gas, ascent rate, and symptom onset are what a hyperbaric physician needs, and reconstructing them afterwards is unreliable.
- Manage the rest of the team. An incident affects everyone's judgement, and continuing the day's diving after a serious incident is usually the wrong call.
- Report and debrief every incident and near miss to the Diving Safety Officer — the safety framework only works if it is fed real information.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
