Course Description
Primatology is an overview of the taxonomy, evolutionary history, ecology, and behavior of non-human primates, and the theoretical basis and methodology of primate studies. It is offered concurrently with ANG5550, with graduate students assigned additional work.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ANT is the Anthropology prefix. UWF publishes this at 3 semester hours.
Primatology sits in anthropology for a reason that is easy to state and easy to overstate. Studying our closest relatives constrains what can be said about human evolution — behaviours shared with chimpanzees and bonobos are plausibly ancestral, and behaviours unique to us require a human-specific explanation. The overstatement to avoid is treating any living primate as a model of an ancestor; they are contemporaries with six million years of their own evolution since the split. The inclusion of "theoretical basis and methodology" in the description is the safeguard — it is a course about how primate behaviour is actually studied, not a tour of species.

- ⚠⚠ An honest word about forensic anthropology specifically. It is among the most popular specialisms because of television, and there are very few full-time forensic anthropologist positions in the United States. Most practitioners are academics who consult for medical examiners, and board certification requires a doctorate plus documented casework. The skills transfer well to bioarchaeology, CRM, museum work, and medicolegal investigation — plan for those, and treat forensic practice as something you may add rather than a job to apply for.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Behavioural sampling method determines what you observe
- Watching animals is not data collection. Without a systematic sampling protocol, an observer records what is conspicuous — and conspicuous behaviour is not representative behaviour.
- ⚠ Ad libitum observation systematically over-samples the dramatic. Fights, mating, and displays get recorded; sitting, resting, and slow feeding do not — which biases every rate you calculate.
- Focal animal sampling follows one individual for a set period and gives unbiased rates for that individual, at the cost of covering fewer animals.
- Scan sampling records the whole group at intervals and gives good activity budgets, at the cost of missing brief events.
- ⚠ Match the method to the question, and state it. A rate calculated from one sampling regime cannot be compared with a rate from another.
- ⚠⚠ Observability differs by individual and by behaviour — dominant animals in the open are seen more than subordinates in cover, and an apparent difference in behaviour can be an artefact of who was visible.
- Habituation takes a long time and it changes what you see. Unhabituated animals flee, and the process of habituating them alters their behaviour in ways that must be accounted for.
- Test inter-observer reliability. Two observers scoring the same behaviour must agree, or the dataset is measuring the observers.
- ⚠ Beware anthropomorphic description — recording an inference ("consoling", "deceiving") rather than the behaviour builds the conclusion into the data.
⚠⚠ Primates are endangered, and research carries obligations to them
- A large proportion of primate species are threatened, driven by habitat loss, hunting, and the trade in live animals — and several are close enough to extinction that research and conservation cannot be separated.
- ⚠⚠ Disease transmission runs both ways. Humans and great apes share pathogens, and researchers and tourists have introduced human respiratory infections to wild ape populations with fatal outbreaks. Distance rules, quarantine, and masks at field sites exist because of that.
- Do not habituate animals to humans casually. Habituation makes them easier to observe and also easier to hunt.
- ⚠ The pet trade and bushmeat trade are direct drivers, and images of primates in human settings — wearing clothes, being handled — measurably increase demand for them as pets. Be careful what you circulate.
- Captive research carries its own ethical framework, with institutional review, welfare standards, and enrichment requirements — and the framework is contested rather than settled.
- Conservation is political and local. Approaches that ignore the needs of people living alongside primates fail, and the successful programmes are the ones built with those communities.
- Field sites depend on long-term relationships with host countries and local staff, and short-term researchers benefit from work others sustain.
- ⚠ Be honest about what conservation messaging can carry. Overstated claims damage credibility, and the situation is serious enough not to need exaggeration.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
