Course Description
Bioarchaeology highlights a field that is at the intersection of archaeology and biological anthropology. Focus is placed on the biocultural perspective that emphasises the biological, social, and environmental contexts in which past people lived, and past life-ways will be understood through careful reading of human skeletal remains to understand individual and population histories. Major components include human osteology, mortuary analysis, demography, paleopathology, paleo-nutrition, migration, and kinship analysis, with discussion engaging the social and theoretical aspects of the meaning of human skeletal remains in a variety of cultural and archaeological contexts. Offered concurrently with ANG5536.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ANT is the Anthropology prefix. UWF publishes this at 3 semester hours.
The word carrying the weight is "biocultural". A skeleton records biology — growth, disease, injury, diet — but the conditions that produced those marks were social: who ate what, who did which work, who was cared for, who was not. Bioarchaeology's claim is that skeletal evidence can reach questions documents cannot, because it records what happened to people's bodies rather than what someone chose to write about them — which makes it one of the few ways to study the lives of people who left no records at all.

- ⚠⚠ An honest word about forensic anthropology specifically. It is among the most popular specialisms because of television, and there are very few full-time forensic anthropologist positions in the United States. Most practitioners are academics who consult for medical examiners, and board certification requires a doctorate plus documented casework. The skills transfer well to bioarchaeology, CRM, museum work, and medicolegal investigation — plan for those, and treat forensic practice as something you may add rather than a job to apply for.

⚠⚠ The osteological paradox — the interpretive trap you must know before reading anything
- A skeletal sample consists of people who died. It is not a sample of the living population, and that fact undermines the most intuitive readings of the evidence.
- ⚠⚠ Lesions require survival to form. Bone remodels slowly, so someone who died quickly may show no skeletal signs at all, while someone who survived the same insult for years shows extensive ones. More pathology can mean better health.
- ⚠ So a population with more lesions may have been healthier, not sicker — because more of its members survived long enough to develop them. The intuitive reading is exactly backwards, and this is standard published theory rather than a quibble.
- Selective mortality: those who died at a given age were the frailest at that age, so the sample over-represents the vulnerable at every age.
- Hidden heterogeneity: individuals differ in frailty for reasons invisible skeletally, so a population-level pattern may be driven by a subgroup you cannot identify.
- ⚠ The response is explicit reasoning rather than paralysis. State the assumptions, consider alternative readings of the mortality structure, and prefer conclusions robust to more than one.
- Combine lines of evidence. Skeletal, archaeological, isotopic, and documentary data together constrain interpretation in ways none can alone — which is precisely what "biocultural" means in practice.
- ⚠ This is one of the most common weaknesses in the published literature, and spotting it is a large part of reading bioarchaeology competently.
⚠ Reading burial treatment socially — and the limits of doing so
- Mortuary practice is performed by the living, and it reflects their concerns as much as the identity of the dead — which is the founding caution of mortuary analysis.
- ⚠ An elaborate burial is not simply evidence of a high-status individual. It may reflect the status of the mourners, an unusual death requiring unusual treatment, or a political claim being made at the funeral.
- Grave goods are chosen by others. They may be personal possessions, gifts, offerings, or objects with no relation to the deceased's life at all.
- ⚠⚠ Age and sex from the skeleton are not gender. Reading gendered social roles from grave goods, and then using those goods to sex the skeleton, is circular and it has produced documented errors — determine sex osteologically and independently.
- Look at variation within a cemetery rather than at individual striking burials; patterns across a population are far more interpretable than single cases.
- Preservation shapes what you see. Differential preservation by age, by burial location, and by soil chemistry can create apparent social patterns that are taphonomic.
- ⚠ Not everyone is in the cemetery. Excluded individuals — infants, the enslaved, outsiders, those who died elsewhere — are frequently absent, and their absence is itself social evidence.
- State the inference chain. Evidence, bridging argument, conclusion, and alternatives considered — mortuary interpretation is where unstated assumptions do the most work.
⚠⚠ Working with human remains — the obligations that come before the science
- These were people. Every skeleton in a teaching or research collection was someone with a family, and the discipline's standards exist because that was forgotten for a very long time.
- ⚠⚠ The history here is genuinely bad. Remains were collected from battlefields, graves, hospitals, and colonised populations without consent, frequently to support claims about racial hierarchy — and many teaching collections still contain individuals acquired that way. Knowing the provenance of the collection you learn on is part of the training.
- NAGPRA — the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act — governs Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, creating consultation and repatriation obligations. It is a legal correction to that history rather than an administrative inconvenience.
- ⚠ Descendant communities have legitimate authority over their ancestors, and consultation works when it begins before a research design is fixed rather than after.
- ⚠⚠ No photographs on personal devices, and nothing on social media, ever. This is absolute. Images of human remains circulated casually are a serious professional violation, they cause real distress to descendant communities, and they have ended careers.
- Handle remains as little as necessary and support them properly. Bone is fragile, and damage from handling is permanent and destroys evidence for everyone who comes after.
- Keep individuals together and keep them labelled. Commingling is one of the worst outcomes in a laboratory and it is easy to cause.
- ⚠ Speak about the individual respectfully, including in the laboratory when nobody outside is listening — the habits formed there are the ones that show in front of families and juries.
- ⚠ Florida section 872.05 makes it a felony to knowingly disturb an unmarked human burial. If remains are encountered outside a controlled context, work stops and the statutory process is followed.
- Some students find this work distressing, and that is normal. Say so to the instructor; programmes expect it, and your college's counselling services are free and confidential.
⚠⚠ Race, ancestry, and human variation — the hardest thing in this subject, stated carefully
- Human biological variation is real, extensively documented, and does not map onto racial categories. Both halves of that sentence matter, and dropping either produces a familiar and unproductive argument.
- ⚠ The empirical findings are not seriously disputed: most human genetic variation occurs within any named population rather than between populations; variation is largely clinal, changing gradually across geography rather than in discrete blocks; and traits vary independently of one another, so grouping by skin colour produces different groups than grouping by blood type or cranial form.
- ⚠⚠ Racial categories are social, historically contingent, and demonstrably unstable. They have changed repeatedly within living memory in law and in the census — which is direct evidence that they are not natural kinds being discovered.
- Social does not mean unreal or unimportant. Race has enormous measurable effects on health, wealth, and life expectancy — operating through lived experience, discrimination, and access rather than through biology, and confusing those two mechanisms is what produces bad science and bad policy.
- ⚠⚠ The misuse is the reason this is taught. Craniometry, intelligence testing, and eugenics were built on the claim that human groups form a biological hierarchy; they informed immigration restriction, forced sterilisation, and genocide. That is not a footnote to the history of this discipline — anthropology was substantially involved, and reckoning with it is part of the training.
- ⚠ There is a genuine live tension, and an honest course does not paper over it. Forensic anthropologists are asked to estimate ancestry from skeletal remains because it helps narrow a missing-persons search — and the field is actively debating whether that practice is defensible, what it actually measures, and how it should be reported. Both the practical utility and the critique are serious.
- What skeletal ancestry estimation actually does is assign a probability of similarity to reference samples, which are themselves social groupings. It is not reading race off a bone, and describing it that way to police, families, or a jury is a misrepresentation.
- Report estimates with their error and their reference population, and state what the method cannot tell you.
- Adaptation explains much of the visible variation — skin pigmentation and ultraviolet exposure, body proportion and climate — and those adaptations do not covary into packages.
- ⚠ Argue from evidence and hold your own conclusions to the same standard. This is a subject where motivated reasoning is easy in every direction.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
