Course Description
Field Methods in Forensic Anthropology — described in the catalog as Forensic Field Recovery — provides on-site training in forensic field methods for the location, documentation, and recovery of human skeletal remains from surface and buried contexts. It is relevant to students with planned careers in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, law enforcement, crime scene recovery, and other medicolegal fields, and includes the use of surveying equipment and hand excavation tools. - ⚠⚠ The contact-hour figure here is the least certain in this batch, and there are two plausible readings. If the course runs as a concentrated field school — the reading taken here — three semester hours at roughly 40 hours a week gives about 120 hours. If it instead runs as a semester-long course with field days, it would be closer to the ordinary 45. The catalog's "on-site training" and its equipment list point to the first, but it does not say which, and the difference is large. Ask the department before planning your term around it.
The audience the catalog names is worth noticing: law enforcement and crime scene recovery, not only anthropologists. That reflects how this work is actually distributed — most buried-remains recoveries in the United States are conducted by police and crime scene personnel, not by anthropologists, and the recovery determines what any later analysis can say. Which means the most valuable thing this course does may be teaching archaeological method to people who will use it at scenes where no anthropologist is present.

- ⚠⚠ An honest word about forensic anthropology specifically. It is among the most popular specialisms because of television, and there are very few full-time forensic anthropologist positions in the United States. Most practitioners are academics who consult for medical examiners, and board certification requires a doctorate plus documented casework. The skills transfer well to bioarchaeology, CRM, museum work, and medicolegal investigation — plan for those, and treat forensic practice as something you may add rather than a job to apply for.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Excavation destroys the scene — and a bad recovery cannot be repaired by good analysis
- A recovery is a one-time, irreversible event. Everything a later analyst can say is limited by what was recorded and preserved at the scene — and no amount of laboratory skill recovers context that was destroyed lifting the remains.
- ⚠⚠ Damage caused during recovery mimics perimortem trauma. A shovel strike, a root pulled through, or a bone lifted under tension produces fractures that can be misread as injury — which is how a recovery error becomes a wrong conclusion in a criminal case. Document any damage you cause, immediately and explicitly.
- Expose before you lift. Pedestal the remains, record them in place, and photograph and map before anything moves.
- ⚠ Small elements are lost without screening — hand and foot bones, hyoid, teeth, and fetal remains. Their absence can change an interpretation, and a recovery that did not screen cannot say they were absent.
- Recover associated evidence, not just the remains. Clothing, personal effects, projectiles, insects, and soil samples all carry information, and the grave fill itself is evidence.
- ⚠ Record what was not there. Absence of an element, or of grave goods, is a finding that only the excavator can establish.
- Maintain chain of custody from first contact. Every transfer documented, every container sealed and labelled.
- ⚠⚠ Treat the person with dignity throughout. Scenes are public, cameras are present, and screening the recovery from view is standard practice — and the family will one day read the report.
- Work to the ME's authority. The remains are in the medical examiner's jurisdiction, and the anthropologist works within it.
⚠ Scene safety, and the fact that this work affects people
- Treat all remains and associated material as a biohazard. Gloves, eye protection, and appropriate coveralls; and be aware of sharps in fill — needles, glass, and metal.
- ⚠ Excavation units are trenches, and a deep grave excavation carries collapse risk. Know the depth limits and shoring requirements.
- Florida field conditions apply — heat is the hazard that actually hurts people, lightning ends work immediately, and snakes and insects are constant. Recovery scenes run long, and heat casualties among personnel are a real risk.
- Decontaminate equipment and yourself before leaving, and follow the scene's protocol.
- ⚠⚠ This work has a psychological cost, and it is not a weakness to feel it. Recoveries can involve children, violence, and distressed families present at the scene — and the effect is cumulative rather than immediate.
- Know your programme's and agency's support resources before you need them, and your college's counselling services are free and confidential.
- Watch colleagues as well as yourself, and say something if you are worried about someone.
- ⚠ Do not discuss cases outside the team, and never photograph a scene or remains on a personal device. This is both a legal and an ethical rule, and breaches of it end careers.
⚠⚠ The forensic context — scope, custody, and bias
- ⚠⚠ The forensic anthropologist does not determine cause or manner of death. That is the medical examiner's determination. The anthropologist provides a biological profile, trauma analysis, taphonomic interpretation, and an estimate of postmortem interval — and stating a conclusion outside that scope in a report or on a stand is a serious professional error.
- Florida operates a district medical examiner system, and remains found in medicolegal circumstances fall under the district ME's authority. The anthropologist works to the ME, not independently.
- ⚠ Chain of custody governs everything. Every transfer must be documented — who had the material, when, and why. A break in the chain can render evidence inadmissible regardless of how good the analysis was.
- Document contemporaneously and completely, including what you could not determine. A report is read years later by people who were not there.
- ⚠⚠ Cognitive bias is a documented problem in forensic science. Analysts told what the investigation expects reach different conclusions from analysts who are not — the effect is real, it has been demonstrated experimentally, and it does not require dishonesty.
- Ask for context you need and refuse context you do not. Knowing the suspect's account before analysing trauma is contamination, not information.
- ⚠ Rigorous national reviews have found several forensic disciplines lacking established error rates, and overstated forensic testimony is a recurring contributor to wrongful convictions. State conclusions to the certainty the method supports and no further — "consistent with" and "to the exclusion of all others" are very different claims.
- Expert testimony is subject to admissibility standards, and a method's validity, error rate, and acceptance can all be challenged. Know the basis of every method you use.
- ⚠ You may be wrong, and saying so is the professional position. An identification is a conclusion families and courts act on — and the pressure to give an answer is exactly when a defensible "I cannot determine that" matters most.
⚠⚠ Working with human remains — the obligations that come before the science
- These were people. Every skeleton in a teaching or research collection was someone with a family, and the discipline's standards exist because that was forgotten for a very long time.
- ⚠⚠ The history here is genuinely bad. Remains were collected from battlefields, graves, hospitals, and colonised populations without consent, frequently to support claims about racial hierarchy — and many teaching collections still contain individuals acquired that way. Knowing the provenance of the collection you learn on is part of the training.
- NAGPRA — the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act — governs Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, creating consultation and repatriation obligations. It is a legal correction to that history rather than an administrative inconvenience.
- ⚠ Descendant communities have legitimate authority over their ancestors, and consultation works when it begins before a research design is fixed rather than after.
- ⚠⚠ No photographs on personal devices, and nothing on social media, ever. This is absolute. Images of human remains circulated casually are a serious professional violation, they cause real distress to descendant communities, and they have ended careers.
- Handle remains as little as necessary and support them properly. Bone is fragile, and damage from handling is permanent and destroys evidence for everyone who comes after.
- Keep individuals together and keep them labelled. Commingling is one of the worst outcomes in a laboratory and it is easy to cause.
- ⚠ Speak about the individual respectfully, including in the laboratory when nobody outside is listening — the habits formed there are the ones that show in front of families and juries.
- ⚠ Florida section 872.05 makes it a felony to knowingly disturb an unmarked human burial. If remains are encountered outside a controlled context, work stops and the statutory process is followed.
- Some students find this work distressing, and that is normal. Say so to the instructor; programmes expect it, and your college's counselling services are free and confidential.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
