Course Description
Environmental Anthropology critically examines the diversity of human-nature relationships — past, present, and emergent. It explores environmental and ecological concepts and questions from an anthropological perspective and analyzes the growing global discourse surrounding questions of climate change, pollution, species and habitat loss, and conservation. Readings and assignments highlight the ways that people living in different cultural and ecological contexts often conceive of, and experience, the natural world in different ways. It is offered concurrently with ANG5022, with graduate students assigned additional work, and it meets the College-Level Communication Skills Requirement.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, ANT is the Anthropology prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 3 semester hours through the Department of Anthropology, College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. It is offered at approximately 3 Florida institutions.

The anthropological angle on environmental problems is that "nature" is not a single object everyone is looking at. Whether a wetland is a resource, a wasteland, a homeland, a carbon sink, or a sacred site depends on who is asked, and those framings drive real decisions about what gets protected and who pays. This is not a relativist parlour trick — it is the reason conservation projects fail, and the ethnographic record on failed protected areas, displaced communities, and rejected interventions is large enough to be a field of its own.
The description's phrase "past, present, and emergent" also signals the discipline's deep-time contribution. Archaeology supplies several thousand years of evidence on how societies have responded to environmental change, including the ones that did not survive it — and that record is a corrective to the assumption that either collapse or adaptation is the default.

⚠⚠ This course meets the College-Level Communication Skills Requirement
- UWF states this designation in the catalog entry, and it has practical consequences. Communication-designated courses carry a substantial writing load and, at most institutions, a minimum grade condition for the requirement to be satisfied.
- ⚠ Confirm the minimum grade with an advisor. Requirements of this kind commonly require a C or better to count, and passing the course is not automatically the same as satisfying the requirement.
- The writing is assessed as writing, not only as content. Expect drafting, revision, and feedback rather than a single end-of-term submission.
- ⚠⚠ Transfer students should verify how this maps. Writing-designated requirements do not always transfer cleanly between Florida institutions even when the course content articulates, so check with the receiving institution rather than assuming.

- UWF states that this course is taught alongside ANG5022, with graduate students assigned additional work. This is routine at UWF and appears throughout the ANT prefix.
- The practical effect on an undergraduate is a seminar with graduate students in the room, and reading selected to work at both levels. The discussion runs at a higher level than a pure undergraduate section, which most students find worthwhile and some find steep.
- The undergraduate requirements are lower than the graduate ones by design — the differential is in the additional work assigned to graduate students, not in the shared material.
- For a student considering graduate study this is a useful preview, and the instructor sees the student working next to the standard they would be held to.
⚠⚠ Conservation has displaced people, and the course is where that record is confronted
- The fortress conservation model — protected areas cleared of human inhabitants — has evicted large numbers of people, disproportionately indigenous and rural. This is documented rather than alleged, and it continues.
- ⚠ The wilderness idea is itself cultural. Landscapes described as untouched have generally been shaped by human management for a long time, and fire management by indigenous peoples is the clearest case — areas protected from all burning have frequently degraded.
- Community-based conservation was the response, and its record is mixed. Some projects work; others reproduce the same displacement under a participatory label. Distinguishing them requires exactly the ethnographic attention the course teaches.
- ⚠⚠ Traditional ecological knowledge is real and it is routinely mishandled. Extracting it for use in management plans without consent, compensation, or continuing relationship is a documented pattern, and the knowledge is often inseparable from the practice and the place that sustain it — a database entry is not the knowledge.
- Avoid the ecologically noble savage framing. Indigenous management practice is frequently sophisticated and effective, and asserting inherent harmony is a stereotype that collapses on contact with the evidence and does no one any favours.
⚠ Collapse narratives are popular, contested, and worth handling carefully
- Popular accounts of societies destroying themselves through environmental mismanagement are widely read and heavily criticised by archaeologists working on the same cases.
- ⚠ The recurring problems are the same across cases: understated colonial and epidemic causes, overstated single-factor environmental explanations, and "collapse" applied to societies whose descendants are still present.
- Rapa Nui is the standard example of a case where the popular account has been substantially revised, and the revision is instructive about how narratives get built.
- The useful finding from the archaeological record is about resilience as well as failure — many societies absorbed severe environmental change through reorganisation, and understanding how is more actionable than cataloguing collapses.
- Read the critiques alongside the popular accounts, which is the standard way this unit is taught.
⚠ Environmental harm is distributed, and Florida is a live case
- Exposure to pollution, heat, and flood risk tracks race, income, and political power in the United States, and this is measurable rather than asserted.
- ⚠⚠ Florida is among the most climate-exposed states in the country — sea level rise, saltwater intrusion into drinking water, hurricane intensity, insurance withdrawal, and heat exposure for outdoor workers are all current rather than projected.
- Vulnerability is social, not just physical. Two households at the same elevation experience the same storm differently depending on insurance, tenure, transport, and documentation status — and evacuation and recovery are where that difference becomes visible.
- Climate gentrification is documented in South Florida, where higher-elevation historically Black neighbourhoods have come under development pressure precisely because of their elevation.
- Agricultural and construction workers face heat exposure that is an occupational health issue now, and Florida's outdoor workforce is large.
Course format and position in the curriculum
- Seminar discussion with heavy reading and a substantial writing component, driven by the communication designation.
- A 4000-level course with no published prerequisite at UWF; ANT2000 is the practical preparation.

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
