Course Description
Mortuary Anthropology: Excavation, Analysis, and Theory teaches how to investigate, excavate, and understand data derived from historic and prehistoric cemeteries and mortuary contexts. The course overviews and critiques archaeological theory and methods used in mortuary analysis, and students engage with datasets drawn from historic and ancient archaeological sites to learn how to organise and analyse mortuary and population data grounded in anthropological theory. It offers skills required of practising archaeologists and bioarchaeologists as they attempt to answer cultural questions about the past, and is offered concurrently with ANG5193.

The description commits to something most theory courses do not: working with actual datasets. Mortuary analysis is where archaeological theory has been argued most fiercely — whether burial treatment maps onto social organisation, whether it can be read at all — and the argument is only tractable if you have organised real data and seen how much interpretation the same table will support. Learning to structure and analyse mortuary data is the transferable half; learning how much weight it will bear is the intellectual half.

- ⚠⚠ An honest word about forensic anthropology specifically. It is among the most popular specialisms because of television, and there are very few full-time forensic anthropologist positions in the United States. Most practitioners are academics who consult for medical examiners, and board certification requires a doctorate plus documented casework. The skills transfer well to bioarchaeology, CRM, museum work, and medicolegal investigation — plan for those, and treat forensic practice as something you may add rather than a job to apply for.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Cemetery archaeology carries obligations that other excavation does not
- A cemetery is a place people were laid to rest by others who cared about them, and frequently one with living descendants who can be identified and consulted.
- ⚠⚠ Florida section 872.05 makes it a felony to knowingly disturb an unmarked human burial. Unmarked burials are common, historic cemetery boundaries frequently extend beyond the visible markers, and a project that encounters burials unexpectedly must stop and follow the statutory process.
- ⚠ NAGPRA governs Native American remains and associated objects, with consultation and repatriation obligations that shape the research design rather than following it.
- Consult before designing, not after. Descendant communities have legitimate authority, and consultation presented as a formality after decisions are made is recognised as exactly that.
- ⚠⚠ Historic African American cemeteries are a live and serious issue in Florida. Burial grounds have been built over, forgotten, and rediscovered, and work on them carries a particular obligation to descendant communities and to honest public accounting.
- Agree the disposition of remains in advance — what analysis will be done, over what period, and what happens afterwards. Reburial timetables must be planned into the project, not negotiated later.
- Excavate only what the question requires. Preservation in place is frequently the right answer, and "we may learn something" is not a sufficient justification for disturbing a burial.
- ⚠ Manage the public dimension. Cemetery projects attract press and public attention; screening the work from view and agreeing in advance who speaks publicly are standard practice.
- No personal photography, and nothing on social media. Absolute, and see the standing note below.
⚠ Mortuary interpretation: what the data will and will not bear
- Mortuary practice is performed by the living. It reflects the concerns of the mourners as much as the identity of the dead — the founding caution of the subject.
- ⚠ An elaborate burial is not simply a high-status individual. It may reflect the mourners' status, an anomalous death requiring unusual treatment, or a political statement made at a funeral.
- ⚠⚠ Do not sex a skeleton from its grave goods. Assigning gender from associated objects and then using it as skeletal sex is circular, and it has produced documented errors that stood in the literature for decades. Determine sex osteologically and independently.
- Analyse variation across the cemetery rather than reasoning from individual striking burials — population patterns are far more interpretable than single cases.
- ⚠ Not everyone is in the cemetery. Infants, the enslaved, outsiders, and those who died elsewhere are frequently absent, and that absence is itself evidence about the society.
- Differential preservation creates false patterns. Infant bone survives poorly, and shallow or acidic burials preserve differently — apparent social patterns are frequently taphonomic.
- Structure the data before interpreting it. A well-organised dataset makes the limits of the sample visible, which is much of the point of the exercise.
- State the inference chain explicitly: evidence, bridging argument, conclusion, alternatives considered. Mortuary interpretation is where unstated assumptions do the most work.
⚠⚠ Working with human remains — the obligations that come before the science
- These were people. Every skeleton in a teaching or research collection was someone with a family, and the discipline's standards exist because that was forgotten for a very long time.
- ⚠⚠ The history here is genuinely bad. Remains were collected from battlefields, graves, hospitals, and colonised populations without consent, frequently to support claims about racial hierarchy — and many teaching collections still contain individuals acquired that way. Knowing the provenance of the collection you learn on is part of the training.
- NAGPRA — the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act — governs Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, creating consultation and repatriation obligations. It is a legal correction to that history rather than an administrative inconvenience.
- ⚠ Descendant communities have legitimate authority over their ancestors, and consultation works when it begins before a research design is fixed rather than after.
- ⚠⚠ No photographs on personal devices, and nothing on social media, ever. This is absolute. Images of human remains circulated casually are a serious professional violation, they cause real distress to descendant communities, and they have ended careers.
- Handle remains as little as necessary and support them properly. Bone is fragile, and damage from handling is permanent and destroys evidence for everyone who comes after.
- Keep individuals together and keep them labelled. Commingling is one of the worst outcomes in a laboratory and it is easy to cause.
- ⚠ Speak about the individual respectfully, including in the laboratory when nobody outside is listening — the habits formed there are the ones that show in front of families and juries.
- ⚠ Florida section 872.05 makes it a felony to knowingly disturb an unmarked human burial. If remains are encountered outside a controlled context, work stops and the statutory process is followed.
- Some students find this work distressing, and that is normal. Say so to the instructor; programmes expect it, and your college's counselling services are free and confidential.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
