Physician Assistant

51.09 Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions · SOC 29-1071

Diagnosing, managing and prescribing across essentially every specialty — $135,880 median, 162,700 employed, 12,000 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠⚠ The barrier is not the transcript. PAEA puts the median matriculant at about 3,200 hours of direct patient contact — one to three years of clinical work BEFORE the programme starts — and Florida's six public programmes award 225 master's degrees a year between them. ⚠⚠ So the real question this page answers is: which job do you take first?

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ FLORIDA WROTE THE CREDENTIAL ESCALATION INTO STATUTE WITH A DATE. Under s. 458.347, F.S., an applicant must have completed a programme accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) and passed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants examination — and anyone MATRICULATING AFTER 31 DECEMBER 2020 must hold a master's degree. ⚠ Check a programme's ARC-PA STATUS, not merely that it has one: accreditation comes as provisional, continued or probationary, and the difference matters to your eligibility and to employers. ⚠⚠⚠ AND THE SAME STATUTE CAPS HOW MANY OF YOU A PHYSICIAN CAN EMPLOY. A physician may not supervise more than 10 currently licensed physician assistants at any one time, and supervision means the physician's easy availability or physical presence for consultation and direction, which may be by telecommunication. ⚠ Prescribing is delegated by the supervising physician against a council formulary, with Schedule II controlled substances limited to a 7-DAY SUPPLY and paediatric psychiatric medication to 14 days. ⚠ A PA may authenticate any document a physician may — including death certificates, do-not-resuscitate orders and school physicals — which is a broader authority than most people assume. ⚠⚠ Let a licence lapse for four years or more and you must retake the entry-level examination, so plan career breaks around that.

⚠⚠⚠ The admission barrier is a JOB, and this site can tell you which one

PAEA's Student Report puts matriculating PA students at a median of about 3,200 hours of direct patient contact — 25th percentile near 1,750, 75th near 5,600. Grade point averages cluster near 3.6.

⚠⚠⚠ Read those two facts together: the GPA screens you out and the HOURS get you in. Three thousand two hundred hours is roughly eighteen months to two years of full-time clinical work before the programme begins. Almost nobody plans for it early enough, and the people who do are the ones who get in.

So the practical question is which job to take. Florida's options, shortest first:

RouteTrainingFL public institutionsMedian wage
✅ Phlebotomist⚠⚠ under 12 weeks29$45,230
EMTabout one semester⚠ 39 (widest in the state)—
Medical assistant~1,300 clock hours38$45,690
Paramedicassociate degree39—
Surgical technologistassociate degree25—
Respiratory therapistassociate or baccalaureate——
Registered nurseassociate degree——

⚠⚠ Every one of these has its own page on this site, so you can compare them properly rather than taking the first thing a pre-PA advisor mentions.

⚠⚠⚠ But check the definition before you enrol in anything. Most programmes distinguish direct patient care experience — hands-on and responsible — from general healthcare experience such as scribing or reception, and count them differently or not at all. Get each programme's own wording in writing. A year spent accumulating hours that do not count is the most expensive mistake available on this path.

⚠⚠⚠ The comparison that actually matters: PA or nurse practitioner?

These two careers are chosen against each other constantly, and the honest comparison is in the statutes, not the job descriptions.

Physician assistantAutonomous APRN
Florida statutes. 458.347s. 464.0123
Independence⚠ supervised — a supervising physician is required✅ autonomous after 3,000 supervised clinical hours plus graduate credits in differential diagnosis and pharmacology
Clinical scope✅ every specialty — surgery, emergency, dermatology, orthopaedics⚠ primary care only — family medicine, general paediatrics, general internal medicine; no surgery beyond subcutaneous procedures
Employer constraint⚠⚠ a physician may supervise at most 10 PAs at one timenone once registered

⚠⚠⚠ The trade is real and it runs in both directions. The autonomous APRN buys independence and pays for it in scope: primary care only. The PA buys scope — the whole of medicine and surgery — and pays for it in independence.

⚠ And the ten-PA cap is a supply fact nobody explains. The number of PA posts a practice can create is tied to its physician headcount in a way nurse practitioner posts are not. It does not make jobs scarce — 12,000 openings a year says otherwise — but it shapes where they are.

The occupation

Physician assistants (29-1071)
2025 median$135,880
Employed (2024)162,700
Annual openings12,000
Growth 2024–34✅ much faster than average (7% or higher)
Education81% master's, 14% professional degree, 5% bachelor's

O*NET's task list is worth reading for what it does not hedge: make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients; interpret diagnostic test results for deviations from normal; prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval; examine patients to obtain information about their physical condition.

⚠ This is clinical decision-making, not assistance. The title understates the job, which is part of why the profession keeps arguing about its own name.

⚠⚠ Six programmes, 225 seats

InstitutionMaster's awarded (2023)
University of Florida58
Florida State University56
University of South Florida47
Florida International University45
Florida Gulf Coast University19

⚠ All master's, all universities, and all in the south and centre of the state plus Gainesville and Tallahassee. There is no state-college route and no part-time undergraduate route.

⚠⚠ One honest caveat: this site lists PUBLIC institutions only. Florida has several substantial private PA programmes, so 225 is not the state's whole annual output — but it is the whole of its public-tuition output, and that is the number that decides what this costs you.

✅ The prerequisite year is the cheap part — do it locally

The prerequisite list is consistent across programmes and Florida's public colleges carry every item of it, most at 15 to 39 institutions: anatomy and physiology with laboratories, microbiology, general chemistry, organic chemistry or biochemistry, general biology, statistics, psychology, developmental psychology, medical terminology and composition.

⚠⚠ So the sensible shape of this path is: do the prerequisites at a state college while working a clinical job, then apply to one of the six. That is cheaper than a four-year science degree taken without the hours, and it directly attacks the thing that actually decides admission.

⚠ Watch the science grades anyway. Programmes usually compute a separate science GPA, and a weak organic chemistry grade is visible for years.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ Start accumulating patient care hours in your first year of college, not your last. Three thousand two hundred is the median, and you cannot compress it. This is the single most important sentence on this page.

⚠⚠ Get each programme's definition of qualifying hours in writing before you take the job. Scribe work and front-desk work frequently do not count; phlebotomy, EMS, medical assisting, nursing assistance and technologist work generally do.

⚠ Do the prerequisites at a state college. They are carried nearly everywhere in Florida, they cost a fraction of university tuition, and the admissions committee does not care where the credit came from nearly as much as it cares about the grade and the hours.

⚠⚠ Decide PA against nurse practitioner on scope and independence, not on salary. If you want surgery or emergency medicine, the PA route reaches them and autonomous APRN practice in Florida does not. If you want to run your own primary care practice, s. 464.0123 is the route and s. 458.347 is not.

And take the ten-PA supervision cap into account when you look at where the jobs are. Large groups and hospital systems can absorb many PAs; a two-physician practice can employ at most twenty, and in reality one or two.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Physician Assistant Studies 6 Florida schools
The programme itself — 6 Florida public institutions, 225 master's degrees a year, UF 58, FSU 56, USF 47, FIU 45, FGCU 19. ⚠ Read its degrees note on the patient-care-hours barrier and on checking ARC-PA accreditation STATUS rather than just its existence.
Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The alternative to weigh, and the difference is statutory. An APRN meeting s. 464.0123 may practise AUTONOMOUSLY in Florida primary care; a PA under s. 458.347 may not practise without a supervising physician. ⚠ But the PA's scope reaches surgery, emergency and every specialty, and autonomous APRN practice does not. ⚠⚠ Nursing is also an excellent route to the hours: 78 Florida institutions.
Phlebotomy 29 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The fastest route in Florida to being employed in patient contact — all 772 credentials awarded in 2023 were certificates of UNDER TWELVE WEEKS, at 29 public institutions. ⚠ Confirm with each PA programme that it counts phlebotomy as direct patient care; definitions vary, and this one sits nearer the line than nursing or EMS.
Emergency Medical Services 39 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The widest clinical footprint in Florida — 39 public institutions — and EMT is about a semester. Hands-on by definition, so the hours are rarely questioned. ⚠ The standard pre-PA job for a reason.
Medical Assisting 38 Florida schools
⚠ A broader hours route than phlebotomy, and the same programme: s. 458.3485 permits vital signs, venipuncture, injections and medication administration under physician supervision, and Florida's medical assisting framework contains the phlebotomy exit at 75 hours. 38 public institutions.
Surgical Technology 25 Florida schools
⚠ Named for applicants aiming at surgical PA practice specifically — a large part of the profession, and the part autonomous APRN practice cannot reach. Scrubbing cases produces unambiguous hands-on hours and directly relevant experience.
Respiratory Therapy 18 Florida schools
⚠ A slower route to the hours but a licensed clinical one, so they are never questioned and the pay while accumulating them is much better than an entry certificate. ⚠⚠ Worth considering if you are not certain about PA school: it is a career in its own right rather than a stepping stone.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Athletic Trainer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
⚠⚠⚠ A master's-entry, state-licensed clinical profession paying $62,520 — less than a licensed practical nurse earns on a certificate ($64,400), and less than every associate-degree clinical route on this site except paramedic. ⚠⚠ The profession moved to master's entry in 2022: CAATE states that after the fall 2022 term, baccalaureate degree programmes will no longer enrol students. ⚠ Florida's statute has not caught up and still reads as though a bachelor's is enough.
Dental Hygienist Dental Support Services and Allied Professions
Dental hygienists are licensed clinicians who assess and treat the gums, remove calculus and stains, take and read radiographs, apply preventive agents, and teach patients to look after their own teeth. ⚠ A median of $98,100 on a two-year associate degree — the highest of any two-year route on this site. ⚠⚠ Florida licenses the work under Chapter 466 and requires THREE separate examinations on top of the degree. ⚠⚠⚠ Admission is the hard part, not the coursework: 18 public programmes in the whole state, all limited-access.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Sonographers produce and interpret the ultrasound images physicians diagnose from — deciding in real time which views answer the clinical question, and recognising the difference between healthy and pathological tissue on a screen nobody else is watching. ⚠ A median of $96,590 on a two-year degree, second only to dental hygiene among the two-year routes on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And a regulatory fact worth knowing before you enrol: Florida does NOT license sonographers, because the statute is written about radiation rather than about imaging.
Health Care Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
Running the non-clinical half of health care — budgets, staffing, quality, compliance, revenue, regulators. $123,860 median, 616,200 employed, 62,100 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠ There is no required major: Census microdata puts HEALTH first at 169,319 people, BUSINESS second at 75,396 and PSYCHOLOGY third at 47,154. ⚠⚠⚠ But Florida statute puts a price on the choice — on the nursing home side, a health administration major halves the required training programme from 2,000 hours to 1,000.
Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.
Licensed Practical Nurse Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants
LPNs give direct nursing care under an RN or physician — medications, wounds, vital signs, assessment — and supervise aides. ⚠ It is the widest-taught credential on this site (48 Florida institutions, 1,322 completions a year), a median of $64,400, and the one field where Florida law publishes each programme's licence-examination pass rate before you enrol. Look it up.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Medical Laboratory Scientist Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Nurse Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing
⚠⚠⚠ Florida grants nurse practitioners autonomous practice — and almost every account of it omits the limit that matters. Autonomous registration covers PRIMARY CARE ONLY. It does not let you practise your specialty without a physician protocol, and only certified midwives are excepted. 11,201 APRNs were registered for autonomous practice as of the 2024 legislative analysis. ⚠⚠ The occupation itself is nearly twice the size of the physician assistant profession — 320,400 employed, 29,500 openings a year, $132,300 median.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Occupational therapy assistants deliver the treatment that gets people back to doing ordinary things — dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing — after injury, stroke, developmental delay or mental illness. ⚠ A median of $72,300 on a two-year degree, growing 21%. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding worth acting on: it pays MORE and grows FASTER than the physical therapist assistant, and Florida trains a QUARTER as many. Four institutions, 57 graduates a year. This page covers the assistant, the aide and the therapist.
Paramedic Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Paramedics are the highest level of prehospital care — assessing and stabilising at the scene, administering drugs, managing advanced airways, reading ECGs and running a cardiac arrest before the patient reaches a hospital. ⚠ Median $60,600, reached through a certificate rather than a degree, and stacked on top of a short EMT course most people complete first. ⚠⚠ In Florida this is substantially a FIRE SERVICE credential: departments pay for it and pay extra for holding it. ⚠⚠⚠ And the accreditation rule here is the strictest on this site — the wrong programme leaves you unable to certify at all.
Pharmacist Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Administration
⚠⚠ One route: the Doctor of Pharmacy, awarded in Florida's public system by UF, FAMU and USF (about 412 a year). ⚠⚠ Admission turns on two or more years of prerequisite science, not a bachelor's degree: UF's minimum is an associate degree, and more than half of Pharm.D. applications nationally come from people without a bachelor's. Median pay is $140,910 nationally and $135,970 in Florida. BLS expects retail demand to be limited as prescriptions move online and by mail.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

BSC2085 —Anatomy and Physiology I Guide
Anatomy and Physiology I — 20 institutions. The universal PA prerequisite, and the grade admissions committees look at first.
⚠ ⚠ Two equivalent packagings: BSC2085 plus BSC2085L at 20 institutions, combined BSC2085C at 7. ⚠⚠ Some programmes require the laboratory explicitly — check, because the combined form satisfies it and a bare lecture does not.
BSC2085L —Anatomy and Physiology I Laboratory Guide
Anatomy and Physiology I Laboratory — 19 institutions. Required by most programmes as a separate line item.
BSC2086 —Anatomy & Physiology II Guide
Anatomy and Physiology II — 19 institutions. Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and endocrine — the systems most of the clinical year is about.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as the combined BSC2086C at 7 institutions.
BSC2086L —Anatomy and Physiology II Lab Guide
Anatomy and Physiology II Laboratory — 19 institutions.
MCB2010 —Microbiology Guide
Microbiology — 16 institutions. Universally required, and the foundation for infectious disease and antibiotic prescribing.
⚠ ⚠ MCB2010L, the laboratory, is carried at 15 and is separately required by most programmes.
CHM1045 —General Chemistry I Request a guide
General Chemistry I — 15 institutions. Required by essentially every programme, and the gateway to organic and biochemistry.
CHM1046 —General Chemistry II Request a guide
General Chemistry II — 15 institutions. The second half, and a prerequisite for organic chemistry.
CHM2210 —Organic Chemistry I Guide
Organic Chemistry I — 29 institutions. ⚠ Required by many but not all programmes; where a programme accepts biochemistry instead, biochemistry is usually the more useful course clinically.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Check each programme: some require organic, some biochemistry, some either. Taking the wrong one is a year lost.
BCH3023 —Introductory Biochemistry Request a guide
⚠ Biochemistry — only 7 institutions, and upper division, so it is the hardest prerequisite to obtain locally. Several programmes prefer or require it over organic chemistry.
⚠ ⚠⚠ With seven carriers this is the prerequisite most likely to force a transfer or an online course. Check whether your target programmes accept organic chemistry instead BEFORE planning around it.
STA2023 —Elementary Statistics Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. Universally required, and you will read trial evidence for the rest of your career.
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. A standard prerequisite, and behavioural health is a large share of primary care practice.
DEP2004 —Human Growth & Development Guide
Developmental Psychology — 29 institutions. Frequently required specifically, and often overlooked until the application year.
⚠ ⚠ Check the requirement early; it is one of the commonest missing prerequisites.
BSC2010 —General Biology I Guide
General Biology I — 20 institutions. The majors-level biology sequence, required where a programme wants majors biology rather than anatomy alone.
⚠ ⚠ Not interchangeable with BSC2085 at most programmes — they want both.
HSC1531 —Medical Terminology Request a guide
Medical Terminology — 16 institutions. Required by some programmes, assumed by all, and cheap.
⚠ ⚠ Florida numbers this twice: HSC1531 at 16 institutions and HSC2531 at 8.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. A universal prerequisite, and the personal statement is a real component of the application.
SPC1017 —Fundamentals of Speech Communication Guide
Fundamentals of Speech Communication — 16 institutions. ⚠ Named because PA admission is interview-heavy, frequently in multiple mini-interview format, and this is the cheapest deliberate preparation available.
