Paralegals do the substantive legal work that does not require a licence — drafting pleadings and contracts, investigating facts, searching records, managing discovery and keeping cases organised. ⚠ A median of $62,890 on an associate degree, at 32 Florida institutions. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the outlook honestly: this is the only path on this site where the federal handbook names ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a reason demand will be limited, and it projects 0% growth. That does not make it a bad career, but it changes how you should enter it.
O*NET, on paralegals and legal assistants: prepare affidavits or other documents, such as legal correspondence, and organize and maintain documents in paper or electronic filing system; prepare, edit, or review legal documents, including legislation, briefs, pleadings, appeals, wills, contracts, and real estate closing statements; investigate facts and law of cases and search pertinent sources, such as public records and internet sources.
⚠ A paralegal is not a legal secretary. The distinction is substantive legal work: research, drafting and factual investigation that a lawyer would otherwise do, performed under a lawyer's supervision and billed as legal work. It is also not a route into practising law — that requires a JD and the Bar examination, and this page's sibling covers it.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Jobs | Outlook 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Title examiner, abstractor and searcher | 23-2093 | $58,650 | 57,400 | 1–2% slower than average |
| Paralegal and legal assistant | 23-2011 | $62,890 | 404,900 | ⚠⚠ 0%, −1,100 jobs |
And the BLS gives the reason, which it does for no other occupation on this site:
“Demand for these workers is expected to be limited by advances in technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies are expected to make paralegals and legal assistants more efficient at tasks such as conducting research and preparing documents, which may reduce demand for these workers.”
⚠⚠ Take that seriously and in proportion. Zero growth is not collapse — there are still 39,300 openings a year from people leaving and retiring, and 404,900 people doing this job. But the two tasks the handbook names as automatable — conducting research and preparing documents — are exactly the two tasks O*NET lists first. The core of the job is the part most exposed.
⚠⚠⚠ What survives is the part machines are worst at: interviewing a client who does not know which facts matter, tracking down a record that is not digitised, noticing that a document contradicts one filed two years ago, and managing a case through a court's procedures and deadlines. Enter this field aiming at that work, not at document production.
This is the clearest example on the site of a deliberate two-tier numbering scheme, and it will confuse you if nobody explains it. Florida's A.S. in Paralegal Studies is overwhelmingly a state-college credential using 1000- and 2000-level numbers; the BS in Legal Studies is a university credential using 3000- and 4000-level numbers — and it renumbers the same subjects.
| Subject | State colleges | Universities |
|---|---|---|
| Family law | PLA 2800 — 18 institutions | PLA 3806 (2), PLA 4806 (2) |
| Law office management | PLA 2763 — 10 | PLA 4764 (2) |
| Property and real estate | PLA 2610 — 12 | PLA 3613 (1) |
| Bankruptcy | PLA 2460 (2) | PLA 3464 (1) |
⚠ This is a DESIGN, not a defect. A baccalaureate requires upper-division hours, so the universities cannot count a 2000-level course toward one — hence the renumbering. The consequence for you is real all the same: if you complete the A.S. and then go on to the BS, expect to meet familiar subjects again at greater depth, and expect those credits to count as electives rather than as the requirement.
⚠⚠ Ask about Florida's excess-hours provisions before you enrol in the BS. Accumulating credits well beyond what a degree requires can carry a financial penalty, and the A.S.-then-BS route is exactly the shape that accumulates them. Get the articulation in writing from the receiving university, subject by subject.
Because the prefix splits by sector, the statewide prerequisite records — which are contributed by institutions — were written from the state-college side and name courses the universities do not carry.
⚠⚠ So do not plan a sequence from the statewide record. Use your own institution's catalogue, and read a dangling prerequisite as a sign that the course belongs to the other tier rather than as something you have missed. The upside is worth noting: where the real gate turns out to be freshman composition, the course is open to students outside the major.
The state-college core is well carried and transfers within that tier: PLA 1003 Introduction to Paralegal Studies at 19 institutions, PLA 2800 Family Law at 18, PLA 1104 and PLA 2114 Legal Research and Writing at 16 each, PLA 2600 Wills, Trusts and Estates at 14, PLA 2610 Real Estate Law at 12, PLA 2273 Tort Law at 10.
⚠ One caution carried over from the wider catalogue: do not infer the level from the sector. St Petersburg College is a state college and carries PLA 4806 and PLA 4554 at 4000 level, because it holds baccalaureate authority. Check the carrier, not the institution type.
The Florida Registered Paralegal credential requires an attorney attestation under both eligibility routes, which means you cannot obtain it before you are employed. It is a mid-career marker rather than an entry ticket, and the same is true of the NALA and NFPA certifications that satisfy the alternative route.
⚠⚠ The continuing-education requirement is the interesting part. Thirty hours every three years, of which five must be ethics or professionalism and three must be technology. The Bar has already decided that technology competence is a permanent obligation of this profession — which is the most direct institutional answer available to the automation question above.
⚠⚠ Pick the tier deliberately. The A.S. at a state college is the cheapest route to the job and it is what most Florida paralegals hold. The BS is a different credential at a different level, and taking both means repeating subjects. If you know you want the bachelor's, ask whether going straight to it is cheaper than the ladder.
⚠ Aim at a specialism the automation does not reach. Litigation support, e-discovery management, trial preparation, complex real-estate closings and probate administration all involve judgement, clients and physical records. General document production is the part under pressure.
⚠ Become the person who runs the AI tools. The Bar mandates three hours of technology CE every cycle for registered paralegals. The firms are adopting these tools whatever you do, and the paralegal who configures and checks them is more valuable, not less.
⚠ Get registered once you are employed, and get your supervising attorney's attestation while you still work there — it is much harder to obtain after you leave.
And if law itself is the goal, read the Lawyer path first. Paralegal work is a genuinely good way to find out whether you like the profession before committing to a JD, and a great many law students did exactly that — but it is not a shortcut, and no part of it substitutes for the degree.
There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (LEGAL PROFESSIONS AND STUDIES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 15 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
