Mechanical engineering technicians test, build and improve mechanical systems beside engineers — instrumenting a design, finding out whether it behaves as claimed, and writing down what happened. ⚠ Median $74,510, but read the education data: more than a third of employers in this occupation ask for a bachelor's.
Licensure and accreditation
⚠ No licence stands in the way, and the accreditation question is the same as for every technology degree here: ABET's ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY commission, and six years of experience before a PE under s. 471.013 rather than four. ⚠⚠ But in THIS occupation the sharper question is hiring, not licensure: 37% of O*NET's respondents said a bachelor's degree is required against 14% an associate. So confirm two things before enrolling — what local employers actually ask for, and whether the associate degree articulates into a bachelor's at that college.
What the work actually is
O*NET: apply theory and principles of mechanical engineering to modify, develop, test or adjust machinery and equipment under direction of engineering staff or physical scientists. The tasks are concrete — assemble or disassemble complex mechanical systems; interpret engineering sketches, specifications or drawings; test machines, components, materials or products to determine characteristics such as performance, strength or response to stress; analyze test results in relation to design or rated specifications; design molds, tools, dies, jigs or fixtures for use in manufacturing processes.
⚠ Testing is the centre of this job. Someone has to find out whether the design behaves as claimed, instrument it, and write down what happened — and that someone is usually a mechanical engineering technician rather than the engineer who drew it.
Projected need — and a warning in the education data
O*NET, on federal projections: 38,300 employed (2024), growth “little or no change”, 3,200 openings a year, median wages $74,510 (2025).
⚠⚠ Read the education split before you commit: 37% of O*NET's respondents said a BACHELOR'S degree is required, 33% a post-secondary certificate, and only 14% an associate degree. That is unusual on this site — most technician occupations sit on the two-year degree — and it means employers in this field often want the four-year qualification. Check the job adverts where you actually live before treating the associate degree as the destination, and check what it articulates into.
⚠⚠ Technology or engineering — and here the question is sharper
The same statutory distinction applies as everywhere: an approved engineering curriculum needs four years of experience before the PE examination, an approved engineering technology curriculum six (s. 471.013, Florida Statutes). ⚠ But in this occupation the argument is not mainly about licensure — it is about who gets hired at all. With over a third of employers asking for a bachelor's, the mechanical ENGINEERING degree is a genuine alternative rather than a different ambition, and it is offered at eleven Florida institutions against thirteen for this technology family.
⚠ The honest framing: take this degree because you want to build, test and measure, and confirm that it articulates upward. If the goal is design work, look hard at the engineering degree first.
⚠ Where it is taught
Thirteen Florida public institutions award in the mechanical engineering technology family — six under automotive engineering technology (187 credentials) and five under mechanical engineering technology (88). ⚠ The course core is more widely available than the degree: mechanical measurement and instrumentation at 15 institutions, hydraulics and pneumatics at 12, manufacturing processes and materials at 12, SolidWorks at 12.
Necessary skills
- Measurement and instrumentation — gauges, sensors, data acquisition, and knowing what a reading is worth.
- Drawings and CAD. Reading them properly, and producing them in SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Fluid power — hydraulics and pneumatics, which is where a great deal of industrial machinery actually lives.
- Materials and manufacturing processes: how a part is made decides what it costs and how it fails.
- Test discipline and reporting. ⚠ A test nobody can reproduce from your notes was not a test.
Advice
- ⚠ Confirm the articulation to a bachelor's before you enrol. In this occupation more than any other technician role on this site, the four-year degree is what a large share of employers ask for.
- Learn SolidWorks properly — not to click through it, but to model for manufacture. It is on twelve Florida institutions' course lists and on most job adverts.
- Take quality and lean seriously. Quality assurance and lean/six sigma courses are carried at 12–15 institutions and they travel into every manufacturing employer.
- Florida's work is aerospace, medical devices, marine and building products, plus the theme-park engineering that exists nowhere else at this scale.
- If the mechanical work you want is hands-on repair rather than test and development, read the industrial maintenance path — bigger occupation, faster growth, shorter training.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it
covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that
awarded a credential in the field in 2023;
it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different
from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do
not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification
(ENGINEERING/ENGINEERING-RELATED TECHNOLOGIES/TECHNICIANS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in.
⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and
expensive late.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on.
A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own
institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
